What are the San Diego Chargers needs?
Hello San Diego Chargers Fans,
GreaZzy from Revenge of the Birds here, and don't worry I come in peace. Since the season is over for us Cards fans(and unfortunately your season is over as well) I have shifted my focus to the upcoming NFL draft. I really like working on mock drafts, and trying to make the most realistic and accurate draft possible. That is where you guys come in.
I'm currently working on a chart which has every teams needs going into this off-season, both major needs and minor needs. I would be so grateful if you Chargers fans would help me complete this chart more accurately by providing your insight to the San Diego Chargers needs going into the draft. Any information regarding draft strategy of your organization would be helpful as well.
Thanks in advance, and better luck next year in your season!

Chargers needs for 2012
I will attempt to order these in terms of need:
OLB – this is probably need #1. We need another elite pass rusher and there is very little depth at this position behind S. Phillips and A. Barnes (who had a really good season). L. English is probably gone after numerous injury plagued seasons.
SS – the Bob Sanders experiment was a tremendous failure. The guy seems like a playmaker when he’s out there but he can’t stay on the field. A Laron Landry type SS would really help. There is also a possibility Q. Jammer could transition to Safety in which case this need would change to CB.
OL – we were fortunate to find J. Gaither after the Chiefs released him mid season. K. Dielman is likely retiring, N. Hardwick is an UFA, and M. Mcneil went to IR with another neck injury. We need to re-sign Gaither and Hardwick. We probably need to bring in 2 OL through FA or the draft.
TE – A. Gates’ foot is likely going to be a recurring/chronic issue. He can still play, but his best years are behind him. R. McMichael is on the wrong side of 30 as well. Drafting a solid pass catching TE should be up there as far as priorities.
CB – Even if Jammer doesn’t move to S this year, this was the first season he seemed to get beat deep by younger WR a lot. He might have another season left at CB but that’s probably it. This is not one of the strongest positions on the team and Jammer is aging.
NT – A. Garay is a FA. Hopefully we can re-sign him. If not it’s not 100% clear whether Cam Thomas is ready to start full time at NT (although he showed tremendous improvement this past season). If Garay is gone this is a high priority fill because everything in the 3-4 defense starts with the NT.
ILB – T. Spikes is really old, and even though he is still a solid ILB this is not a position of great depth. If Spikes were injured there would be problems at ILB. We never got to see J. Mouton who was drafted in the 2nd round last year as he went on IR before the season started so who knows what we have there.
RB – M. Tolbert and J. Hester are both free agents. Probably only one of them gets resigned.
WR – V. Jackson is an UFA, M. Floyd can’t stay healthy and P. Crayton is gone. Probably have to add at least one at WR and the list of free agents is pretty distinguished at the WR position.
QB – We could probably use a new backup or project QB. Billy Volek is pushing 36 and even though the mileage is low the last couple years backing up Rivers he’s old and fairly expensive as a backup QB.
There are a lot of needs on this Chargers roster. I’d be all for trading out of the 18th spot in the 1st round to move down and acquire more picks.
See this link: 2012-rebuilding-with-an-open-window
http://www.boltsfromtheblue.com/2012/1/3/2679640/2012-rebuilding-with-an-open-window
There is a lot of discussion concerning this topic. In general most think we need to address our Defense in the early rounds of the draft (day one). Some argue that we should address our DB (SS or CB) first while others feel we need to focus on the OLB/pass rusher. There is yet a third sentiment as well, and a fairly logical one too if I might add, that suggest we spend our first on a instant starter caliber Offensive lineman because we have age and injury issues in that area.
For day one picks we are looking at DB, OLB, OL.
For day two picks we are looking at probably DB, OLB, OL, WR, TE
For day three picks we are looking at probably DB, OLB, OL, WR, TE, QB (backup)
Note that all of this may change SHOULD our GM do something out of character and actually make a move in the Free Agent pool. But if everything remains the same I think this would be a pretty accurate depiction of where we are looking to improve through the draft this year.

OMG!!!!
Go read this article: http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/01/12/cornerbacks-a-glance-at-the-2011-numbers/
After reading that tell me that DB (specifically CB) is not a need?! With stats like that it makes you wonder if Q-Jam is even fit to play SS!
QJ was a top-10 QB for a few years until this year
Has he crashed, or was it just a down year? What’s the new DC think of Gilchrist and Cason?
I don’t think you can solve immediate sideline CB needs through the draft. I think you need a year or two to do that. Maybe a free agent?

Secondary, and linebacking core
EWeddle is the only part of our secondary that opposing QB’s respect and as far as or linebacking core I believe we need to get a more young athletic mlb, Spikes is cool but only for a limited amount of snaps and certain packages. That guy Jammer is definitely a weakspot in our corner position because of his lacc of ballhawking skills but I believe he would be dangerous at SS because he is a brute and physical defender hence all his flags for holding and pass interference. Cason is better coming in at niccel, but I think Gilchrist could start and be a real good edition.

Cason is actually much less effective playing inside as the nickel.

Dante Hughes was the primary nickel DB, but Gilchrist supplanted him by the end of the year.

Alot of great defensive prospects coming out in this years draft its time for the CHARGERS to capitalize on some of the guys we saw in the BCS title game. The ball is on our court offensively as long as we retain VJ.

Big, fast pass-rushing OLB who played and produced against good competition
After that, OL x3. I like Gilchrist, Cason and Jammer as our CBs, maybe, but I wouldn’t blame AJ for drafting one for the future. I don’t think we should invest valuable picks in other positions. 5th and later can go to QB, TE, SS.

and if I say
Offense should have two picks out of the first 3 rounds you guys would say?
Depends on Free Agency
If we get a OLB, SS and/or DE in FA then I wouldn’t mind. There are some good offensive weapons in the draft I’m sure Philip Rivers would love to work. Along with some good OL prospects..
Depends on what the roster looks like after free agency and who is available when the Chargers pick.

We've got offensive playmakers aplenty. More never hurts. Not a need.
We need a two-point-stance pass-rusher who can make the best of our good-but-not-great DL, and cover for the mediocrity of our secondary.

lol @ OLB or DB
Yes our defense sucks, the pass rush does not exist and this severely exposes an average at best secondary. But so what!!! We can still win if there is consistent offensive line play, the kind of protection where Rivers is not only kept alive but is given that extra second or two for the deep strike to develop. This is essentially what a Norv Turner offense does, and it wins games, it can even carry a junky defense, so long as there is superior protection up front.
I mean srsly… I can’t be the only one who sees an old, injury prone, and down right crappy offensive line doing an awfully hit or miss job of protecting our most valuable resource (Rivers). I am happy that we caught lighting in a bottle with Gaither, but the guy is not the second coming, we need young talent at the position for immediate help and depth… The rest of the offense is fine, and with better, more consistent protection, it should once again be in the top 3, not the top 10 like this year. Never mind it could also help a some what underused run game that is not to bad to begin with and I’d advocate more use of.
All I am saying is… fix the inconsistencies on the offensive line with our premium picks, make it bullet proof, then you work on the defense.
Statistically speaking, they were 9th in Adjusted Sack Rate.
When you realize that’s including the horrible stretch where Dombrowski was asked to play LOT, it’s hard to say the O-line is some huge weakness.

Maybe I'm going overboard...
But between some obviously over matched linemen thrown into the fire due to injury (but non-the-less expected to play at a reasonable level— yet failed)… A couple of ugly and inexcusable penalty meltdowns ( for example: McNiel @ KC after getting abused all night by T.Hall)… And serious, potentially career threatening injuries, to our top tackle and guard. This is not a solid group by any means and now it is one year older and certainly less durable.
I have to believe Rivers has something to do with that ASR, he has outstanding pocket awareness and is fairly adept at getting rid of the ball to avoid the sack. I am just going on what I watched all year compared to previous seasons… Save for a hand full of actually outstanding games by the OL … Rivers was being swarmed all the time by defenders, he had little time to make decisions and was taking an alarming amount of hits. A QB in a vertical system needs to drop back and have time to throw, it sure looked like that most of the season the OL did not give Phillip nearly enough time to make maximum use of his superior quarterbacking skills. This could be one reason why Rivers’ int count was up something like 500% this year! Okay, so maybe if there is a big time defensive player out there early we get him… but I think it would be a deadly mistake to not consider offensive linemen with the same urgency because if our pass rush is completely broken… We are like an injury or two away from the same situation with our pass protection! That would be a true disaster. This is a five win team if our offense isn’t kicking ass in the top 10… at least.
No question it's a conundrum.
And I suspect the best way to address it would be to go one way in Round 1 and the other way in Round 2. However, I will say that the Chargers were able to put a pretty big band-aid on the OLine toward the end of last season. Gaither and Green filled in more than adequately. While at the same time, the pass rush remained abysmal — and continued to poorly affect the downfield coverage.
The reality as I see it is that OLine and DLine/pass rush are the two biggest needs on the team and need to be addressed in BOTH free agency and the draft. Wow… How’s that for super analysis? I really put myself out there with that one!

I think we want some draft picks on the line, for sure.
OT: Re-sign Gaither, trade McNeill. Either draft a dedicated RT or keep Clary, or both.
OG: Keep Vasquez and Green, draft a guy in day 3 unless BPA before that.
C: Re-sign Hardwick to a multi-year front-loaded deal, draft a guy.
That’s a recipe for a good line next year and going forward.

statistcally
Chargers were #1 defense and offense in the league in 2010…doesn’t tell the whole story
Based on DVOA they were 7th on Defense, 4th on Offense and 32nd on Special Teams.
That actually describes the season pretty clearly.

Defense wins Championships.
Offense gets you into playoffs but ultimately the team playing the best defense during the playoffs is the team that is bringing home the trophy. Historically no team whose defense ranked worse the 25 overall has EVER won the superbowl. Same can be said for offense as well. However I think the point is that you can’t just ignore our defense. There are going to be times during the season and especially the playoffs when you are going to need your defense to make a play. You HAVE to address it. Failure to do so would just be, well, “uncivilized”! LOL.
Balanced teams win championships
Or at the very least, the weaker side of the team steps up and becomes red hot at the right time (playoffs)! But that is a moot point, we have missed the playoffs two years running.
I see holes every where on defense and with our OL on offense. I feel that QB play, and by extension QB protection, is the most important thing by far on any NFL team. If the play of the QB is ,or can easily be compromised, then I think that is or becomes your #1 priority every time.
In this case, I seriously question the effectiveness of our OL as it is, and we are a couple of injuries away from a full blown disaster that will destroy our now modest ability to win the division. I’m just saying, make the OL a strength, not a question mark, then build the defense.
The idea
is draft offensively because the defense is not going to have a turn around with a 1st and 2nd rd draft picks. I’m not disagreeing with a defensive pick in the 1st rd, I’m disagreeing with offense needs less help than defense…surround Rivers with a play maker or two…a shifty RB in the 3rd, a WR in the 2nd would help. Chargers D line can survive with the players they have now and CB/DB is not the issue, line backers should be the focus during the draft and a free agent signing would help, maybe Super Mario or Raiders SS
You can get good OL in later rounds...
Vasquez 3rd round
Hardwick 3rd round
Dielman Undrafted
McNeill 2nd round
Gaither 5th round
So priority IMHO is OLB…When Merriman was in his prime, our D was dominat even though our DBs were mediocre at best (McCree, Florence, etc). A guy like aldon smith or von miller would be the greatest impact….

by Lil'Terry on Jan 12, 2012 2:50 PM PST via Android app reply actions
um...
if we stay healthy…Floyd, Mathews are injury prone…with the time Rivers is getting nobody has time to get open, incomplete passes are the result and that’s the part where the D can not hold up because they’re not built that way. Focus should be on offense RB(shifty runner) 3rd round and a WR in 2nd should a priority I believe.
If I'm mocking:
1. Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College
Yes, we need the impact pass rusher desperately, but there’s a fine crop of them this year. What we need for the future is someone who can pair with Butler as the heart and soul of the defense. I am absolutely not a fan of Jonas Mouton, and I consider his presence an inconvenience for purposes of this pick.
2. Vinny Curry, OLB, Marshall
Technically a DE, but he’s got the makeup to move outside and play standing up. He’s a terrifying pass rusher who’s tenacious in pursuit and explodes off the line of scrimmage. Long arms, good speed, and a high football IQ— should be able to drop into coverage if necessary once coached up.
3. Winston Guy Jr., SS, Kentucky
Hits like a dump truck and is good against the run, racking up 120 tackles last season. Not a pass defender— he’s got hands like Jammer— but he’s got the size and speed to stick to TEs.
4. Ryan Miller, OT, Colorado
Enormous frame at 6’8". Listed at 295 but has room to bulk up. Superior run blocker who is adequate against the past. Played both guard and tackle in college, but projects to RT in the pros. Exceptional lateral movement for his size, but at the same time his height allows rushers to get under him and put him off-balance. (At least he isn’t Clary.)
5. Hebron Fangupo, DL, BYU
Eats centers for lunch. He’s big and mean and does a great job occupying blockers and collapsing the pocket. Probably not a pass-rushing threat, but could fill either the end or nose tackle position. Noted for an excellent work ethic.
6. Josh Chichester, TE, Louisville
There are questions about whether he’s a tight end or a wide receiver— Louisville used him in all sorts of situations last year. His blocking ability is good enough, but his acceleration is rather lacking (the big knock is that he gains separation downfield by striding, rather than with a good burst off the line). However, he’s 6’8" with good hands, which immediately makes him a desirable red-zone target in this offense.
7. Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona State
If there’s one thing I will grudgingly concede Norv is good at, it’s developing quarterbacks. Osweiler stands tall in the pocket (really tall— he’s also 6’8") and has pretty good speed when escaping the rush (certainly better than the Baby Giraffe scramble; he ran for 300 yards this season). Extremely powerful arm needs work on touch. Sure, QB is not expressly a “need” position, but PR17 won’t be young forever and we need a new Clipboard Charlie, especially with Volek getting old. It’s a seventh-round pick, why not?

Actually, there are a lot of "project" QBs I like in the later rounds.
Another is Dan Persa out of Northwestern, who possesses laser-like accuracy and a ton of hustle. He’s a mite short at six foot one, though, and doesn’t have top shelf arm strength. Despite this, he’s all heart and makes the most out of the tools he has; very Brees/Tebowesque in that.

What do you think about ...................
Vontaze Burfict – ILB – ASU in the first? This guy really pops on film………I know he’s technically rated lower than Kuechly (who I admittedly haven’t seen play), but this dude seemed like a collegiate Ray Lewis. I’d have no problem drafting this guy in the first and think he and Butler could be a Willis/Bowman type tandom.
I agree there appears to be an abundance of tweener DE/OLB types in this years draft.
There don’t appear to be many top shelf safeties. It looked like the kid from Alabama Mark Barron and the guy from Georgia Bacarri Rambo and then kind of a drop off after those two.
In a perfect world I’d like to see Burfict in the 1st, Rambo in the 2nd, and hopefully find a sleeper OLB in the 3rd (a la Donald Butler).
Because there doesn't appear to be many top-shelf Safeties
I think we focus on getting one in the 1st. I think that the ILB and the OLB talent pool in the draft is much deeper than the aforementioned and as such can be selected at 2nd/3rd rounds without losing much in terms of overall talent.
I do like Burfict but he seems to be a head-case, not just on the field but off the field, and thats what scares me the most about him.
I totally agree about the depth at S in this years draft.........
There are very few top level talents. I suspect taking Barron…………….who appears to be the consensus #1 rated SS prospect in the draft at 17 or 18 or wherever we are picking in the first would probably be a reach though. Everything I’ve seen has him projected as a late 1st rounder/ early 2nd rounder.
If that’s our guy in the 1st would it make sense to trade down and try and acquire a later 1st round pick and another mid round pick, maybe a 3rd or 4th rounder?
Yeah I think that's an option
but you gotta figure who is going to want to trade with you? Atlanta (i think they gave theirs away for Julio Jones)? The Raiders (they gave their 1st and 2nd to Bengals for Carson Palmer)?
But I am still weary about that strategy because its not like we don’t have immediate holes to fill that a #1 draft pick could.
Yeah........I was thinking
It might be possible to move back from 17 or 18 to like 25 or 26 and acquire another 3rd or 4th rounder.
There was a lot of movement like this in last years draft.
I’m sure there is going to be some day 1 talent that ends up falling down the draft board a bit, and if another team sees “their guy” sitting there at 17 or 18 or wherever we’re picking they might swap 1st round picks with us and we could acquire an additional pick.
I think Burfict is crazy.
Unquestionably a talent, but severe temper issues could cause him to flame out at the next level. I’m willing to take a guy like Kuechly or Dont’a Hightower over him (given the opportunity, that is, but I suspect he’ll be off the board by #18) because we’ve had bad luck with our first rounders in the last few years and I’ll make the safe-if-slightly-lower-upside pick.
Barron and Rambo are easily the best safeties on the board, but Guy reminds me favorably of Kevin Ellison, and I’d rather shore up the front seven in the first two rounds. Then again, I’m not a GM.

How about Rhett Ellison a TE from USC
Strengths: Ellison is a versatile option with experience lining up on the line of scrimmage as a tight end, in the backfield at fullback and out wide as a receiver. He is a quick athlete and is usually sure-handed as a receiver. Ellison is a much improved route runner, creating space in coverage. He is a highly competitive player and quickly gets to the perimeter, blocking well in space and at the second level. Ellison is strong at the point of attack and plays with considerable toughness. He plays on special teams coverage as well and shows up any time he’s on the field, playing every play as if it’s his last — a true hustle player. Ellison has good bloodlines as his father was an all-conference linebacker at USC and then later in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Raiders.
Weaknesses: Ellison has only average size and power for the position and won’t overwhelm with his strength at the next level. He doesn’t break many tackles or do enough after contact. Ellison will have his share of drops with inconsistent focus and too often tried running with the ball before the catch. He needs to play more disciplined and control in the moment. Ellison wasn’t used to a large degree most of his career and was just a small part of an explosive offense. Despite not missing any games the last two seasons, he has some durability concerns after suffering two separate leg injuries in 2011.

The positives don't intrigue me enough to make me look past the negatives
Also, six-eight TE/WR tweener with leaping ability. That strikes me as tremendous fun to watch, especially paired with Rivers. It’ll be a huge mismatch (no pun intended) against short AFCW corners like Javier Arenas.

I thought he was going to be one of the better WRs in this years draft

Here's my assessment of where we think we are
OL: Too many unanswered questions. Figure out what’s up at LT, LG, and C, and we’ll see what we’ve really got. May need high draft picks, or not.
QB: Need a backup, probably through FA. Late project is an option.
RB: Nothing to see here. Move along.
TE: Depth need; Sperry can fill McMichael’s shoes, but who will fill Sperry’s?
WR: Re-sign Jackson, and we’re one of the best squads in the NFL.
DL: We got plenty of good players; none are great, but we can put together a quality line with depth.
OLB: We need a big, fast playmaker who can rush the passer AND stop the run.
ILB: A lot depends on Spikes and Mouton. We’re probably okay.
CB: Looks like a weakness, but it’s hard to tell to what extent pass-rush is playing into that. There’s a lot to like about our CBs, but a lot of questions too.
S: We’ve got one for sure. For the other, we’ve got a patchwork of mediocrity, plus the looming question of QJ.
ST: We’re fine.
So needs, in descending order are:
OL (worst case)
OLB
OL (likely case)
CB
SS
OL (best case)
QB
TE

A lot of pundits seem to think we're drafting to replace Gates this year
Hell, WalterFootball has us taking Colby Fleener in the second. Though I don’t think we’ll choose one that high unless he’s the consensus BPA, and any pick at a need position would be a reach, it might not be out of the question to grab one as high as the 4th.
Also— if Jammer moves to strong safety, do we trust Gilchrist and Cason at the corners, or do we draft a Dre Kirkpatrick/Morris Claiborne in the first?

Depends who's there in the first
Good 1st-round choices: QB, OT, DE, OLB, CB. Of those, OLB and CB stand out as good places to pick. As a BPA, I’d be happy with any O-lineman except a LT (Gaither! Gaither! Gaither! Thank you, Baltimore and KC!), because BPA Guards in the middle of the first are almost always impact players, and we could use an upgrade or understudy at LG, C, and RT. (I’m not terrified of going forward with Green and Clary, but replace either one with a stud and watch the team get way better.)
I’m not against a first-round pick on a CB. Not at all. I’d just rather see a terrifying force at OLB make Cason/Gilchrist look good, or a great player at whatever position is on the board, than commit to moving on from a couple young and highly-drafted guys who haven’t really proven that they can’t get it done.

You're probably right about TEs
We got super-lucky with Gates, I know. But I have a feeling that when AJ needs a guy, AJ will find a guy.

Tight End is a need in my mind
Look what NE does with their 2 TE’s. What kind of problems it poses for defenses. Norv loves to use multiple TE sets. If we get another baller at TE I believe it opens up our offense and makes it even better. Gates has had his foot issues the past few years so having another stud will allow a fill-in in case of another injury year (praying for a healthy end to his great career).
This one is easy
Everyone is making this more complicated than it really is. Here is what the Chargers really need in order:
#1-New GM
#2-New Head Coach
Its simple really.
That ship has sailed.

what does that really change?
it wouldn’t guarantee anything, would it?
Dre Kirkpatrick was just busted for pot possession.
Reckon he slips to us in the first after this? Or, knock on wood, the second?

oline
i am new to this but has anybody ever noticed how much time tom brady has in the pocket to throw to his recievers heck i’m over 50 and even i could hit a reciever. I think the chargers need a better offensive line first. what do you all think thanks
