Eli Manning better than Philip Rivers?
In the 2004 NFL draft the San Diego Chargers had the number 1 overall pick. The top Quarterback in everyones eyes was the little brother of Peyton Manning (the best regular season qb of all time) Eli Manning.
Eli told the chargers dont draft me because i dont want to play for you guys, what did the chargers do?.. they drafted him. The Giants, who was the team that Eli wanted to go to drafted a qb that was a coaches son out of NC State... Philip Rivers. Chargers and Giants made a draft day trade of swapping the two qb's and also in return the chargers got the rights to Shawne Merriman.
In the beginning this looked like a great deal to the Chargers because they got a young premier pass rusher and a qb for the future since Chargers still had Drew Brees on the team, and Giants look like they got a (i really dislike Eli so this comment isnt nice but i honestly dont care) shitty qb.
But lets fast forward to the 2007 NFL playoffs... Eli and the Giants make it into the playoffs as a wild card team and go on the road to beat the John Gruden led Bucs, the Tony Romo Cowgirls, and going up to Lambeau Field and beating the 13-3 Favre led Packers in the NFC Championship game.
Rivers and the Chargers on the other hand had one of their best playoff runs in the past 10 years when they beat a all he does is win Vince Young led Titans team, to then go on the road to Peytons House and beat the colts on a game winning drive by backup qb.. Billy Volek, because Rivers tore his ACL in the game. AFC Championship game, 1 game from the superbowl, the Chargers go to New England to play the undefeated Patriots. Philip Rivers played with a torn ACL, L.T. one game away from his first superbowl look uninterested from the sideline while sitting on a bench with his helmet on and a jacket covering him from the cold (L.T. is my favorite player of all time and i know he was hurt in the game but he could of should a little interest and been at least a cheerleader to his teammates). Chargers lost the game because of their lack of scoring touchdowns in the redzone. So undefeated Patriots against Eli and the Giants in Arizona for the superbowl... but wouldnt of it been great to see Eli vs. Rivers in the Superbowl to see which one would show their the better player? (and also actually seeing the chargers in the superbowl.. had to put that in their sorry).
Well we all know what happened the dline for the gmen played AMAZING and Eli made one of the most memorable superbowl plays of all time and little brother Manning won a superbowl... but does this mean Eli is better than Rivers?
NO! Eli deserves his credit and yah he does have the ring that Rivers doesnt have, but lets be realistic now... Rivers is one of the most accurate passers in the NFL and Eli is one of the most inconsistent passers in the NFL. Rivers is a fiery competitor that refuses to lose, while Eli just mopes around and puts his hand up everytime something wrong happens. Rivers has thrown for 4 straight 4,000 yard seasons, while Eli just has 2 straight 4,000 yard seasons. If you compare the weapons that both have, Rivers just had Gates, untill Vincent Jackson started emerging the past 2 years, and Eli had Plax (which i feel like he threw him the ball on almost every play, especially in the NFC championship game in 2007 up in Green Bay) and he had a slot receiver in Steve Smith, and now has players like Victor Cruz and Hakeen Nicks. Dont get me wrong i think Eli is a great player but just because he has a superbowl ring and Rivers doesnt, does not make him a better QB than Philip Rivers.

I haven't read your article but paragraph 4 under section 3d in article C of BFTB code states:
Any and all comparisons of Eli Manning to Philip Rivers depicting Manning as superior in any way, shape or form are both false and strictly forbidden, and as a result grounds for a Ban.
In the words of Wonko:
Rivers. What was the question?

Yes of course Rivers is
i say all the reasons at the end that Rivers is the best, but some people would like to say Eli is just because of his Superbowl win.
Sorry, I wanted to read this, but paragraph breaks make things MUCH easier to read
Without them, my feeble mind just turns into one long, run-on sentence.
yah true, my bad
ill keep that in mind from now on, i wouldnt feel like reading it either cause the way i set it up
you can always edit!
(and rivers)

yah just put some space hope it makes it easier and more appealing to read
Eli
has actually looked very good in the games I’ve seen him in this year. I hear he is inconsistent, but he really has done a great job buying time with his feet and making accurate throws. I am off the “Eli sucks” bandwagon. I think he is probably in the “not quite Rodgers or Brees, but above the Romo” tier.

No, No, No
Eli is not as good as Phillip Rivers. Don’t get me wrong, Eli is a talented QB in this league. When he is on he can be very impressive. BUT he is very inconsistent. He also has a considerably more consistent running attack than Phillip has had AND a better than average (sometimes top 5) defense that can make up for his mistakes – of which he has had plenty. Comparing WRs is difficult to give one QB an edge over another because I have watched many Giant WRs drop a lot of balls, but I have also seen them look unstoppable so I think from a WR perspective/comparison its a toss up.
Before this season (after Phillip had a terrible one) this topic would have NEVER been posted because up until this point there has never been a comparison. But now that PR17 has had a terrible season (by his standards) everyone wants to compare the two.
To sum it up statistically with only one stat.
Eli Manning career Qback Rating: 82.1
Philip Rivers career Qback Rating: 95.5 (last 3 years; prior to this one – 101, 104, 105)
The closes Eli has ever been to a 100+ QB rating has been 2009 (93.1) and this year (92.9)
2011 Eli > 2011 Rivers
There, I said it.

When I voted in the poll
I wanted to yell out “Rodgers!” like the guy in the State Farm commercial. What’s wrong with me?

Rivers vs. Manning
This comparison will go on forever until Rivers gets a ring. You must remember though, Eli has had a better offensive line than Rivers. I mean just look what happened when the Cargers O’line began to play with cohesiveness with Gaither. Rivers started to tear it up in passing yardage again. Give Rivers a full season of a good O’line and see what happens then.
I agree
Rivers is much more prolific than Eli hands down. Had his ACL not ben torn and if LT wouldn’t of got hurt in that titan game we would of ran all over the Pats and went on to win the superbowl. When I think of eli all I see is pick city.

How about Eli Manning > El Capitan in Big Game situations
I know its not always the case but it seems as if there have been more times than not that Rivera folded during games thar we needed him to kill it. But as much as I hate Eli, his super bowl run , where he single handedly beat the crap out of every team in the playoffs will always stand out.
I know I’m probably totally wrong on this… But just the first thought that comes to mind when comparing.

"where he single handedly beat the crap out of every team in the playoffs"?
I’m sure the Giants defensive line and David Tyree had nothing to do with that run.
Don't confuse the issue with facts.

Which Super Bowl run was that? Because the one I remember was a string of skin of the teeth victories powered by a dominating defense. Was it actually Eli that sacked Brady during the Super Bowl, or picked off Favre in the NFCCG?
I voted for Rivers because I am an absolute homer
and because I feel like he could be elevated to godlike status if he were plied with the weapons and system of some other QBs. Can you imagine him in New Orleans’s shotgun-happy offense? Holy crap, he’d shatter every record on the books.
Right now, I’d honestly have to concede that Aaron Rogers has the best skillset. Drew Brees is indubitably talented, but benefits from greater consistency in his teammates and a more pass-oriented offense. Peyton is aging and didn’t play last season, so he’s out of the “right now” discussion. I refuse to vote for Tom “L’Oreal” Brady, even though he’s clearly top-tier. Eli and Rapistberger are a step below the truly elite signal-callers…
and Tim Tebow doesn’t belong in this discussion, period. “All he does is win”, my ass— in the first four quarters against Pittsburgh, he threw forty-five percent. I don’t know anyone else who could get away with that in a playoff game without getting benched.

i agree tebow shouldnt be in the poll
but look how sad it is, he got 7 votes and Brady got 5 votes.

Dont bring up Palmer, first off, Rivers is top 5, but please, he is no better than Rodgers or Brees or Brady, OR a healthy Manning…he is a tough guy with great skill that lacks that ’’it’’, but of course, who will pay attention to the Raider fan xD
that ''it'' to finish things
The one thing the Raiders lacked in the final game. I am hoping it is because of the inmaturity and not the actual thing. Rivers doesnt seem able to have that one thing that pushes the team over the hump. I do not mean leadership, its something hard to explain since it is a thing you sense in every QB. Jay Cutler doesnt have it, Alex Smith doesnt have it, Schaub doesnt have it, Flacco doesnt have it….I cant explain it, but its something you should undersatnd as a football fan

I know what you mean
but I think Rivers is capable of obtaining that “it” factor. We just need to surround him with a better all round team.

Does it really matter?
Its about 1 thing…..Winning the Super Bowl. Eli has, Phillip has not. Is it all his fault? Not at all. All of the talent around him keeps disappearing (LT, Turner, Sproles, Cromartie). AJ has it in his head that as long as Rivers is under center the team will be just fine and win a few games. Sooner or later Rivers will get tired of losing and ask for a trade or worse even AJ will just give him away like he does every other good player we have had. Phillip Rivers gets my vote but its all for not. Eli plays in the NFC Championship next week and Rivers will be watching it on TV.
Absolutely
Smith committed GM malpractice last season with the way he played the McNeil and V Jax holdouts. Rivers had an A+ 2010-211 season and didn’t even make the playoffs due to Smith playing hardball (and horrific specials).
Smith has blown draft after draft and Leugit is looking like a 4th round caliber talent. Smith basically was gifted an elite HOF talent QB and didn’t put the pieces around him. Here is how I would grade Smith:
-coaching pick-F…Norv is the worst combo of being tactically inept (doesn’t understand modern football statistics) and also not instilling fire or discipline (the way a tactically inept coach like Edwards does)
Drafts-C…started as an A and then has collapsed. Luigit and Mouton look like disaster picks…no one from 2011 sniffed the all rookie team and 2010 & 2009 are already busts.
Free agency F….Spanos is Wilpon lite, but Smith put hjs money in Cleary over Sprouls and botched every hold out.
Archie knew what he was doing avoiding this franchise. No shock given that he has two of the smartest QBs as sons.
I find it hard to believe that even you believe the ridiculous things you say.

Could'nt agree with you more
It is NOT about the guys under center it IS about the guys calling the shots in their cozy offices upstairs. This is a little off topic but there is a point to be made: Kobe Bryant was arguably the best player in the NBA yet the team never could win the big one until…….Kobe said get me some talent to play with or I am out of here. Buss listened. The Lakers won a championship. Period. Seems to me the Chargers are trending in the opposite direction and my fear is this: With as intense as PR is and how badly he wants to win how long will it be until…………..
