NFL Cuts: Who Got Cut Around The League?

The Chargers weren't the only team making cuts on Saturday. A number of other teams had to make some hard choices as well. Here's a few names you might recognize along with some notes about each of them.

  • Brandon Meriweather, S, NE
Former Pro Bowler. After some arguments about whether he deserved any Pro Bowl appearances, the Patriots settle it once and for all. Signed by Bears.
  • Tommie Harris, DT, Ind
3 time Pro Bowler who was once was key part of Bears' top defenses. Couldn't catch on with Colts. Career could be over after only 7 years.
  • Justin Gage, WR, Ten
Former #1 WR for Titans proves to be expendable.
  • Brodie Croyle, QB, Ari
Former KC starter couldn't win the backup job for Cardinals.
  • Larry Johnson, RB, Mia
Former Pro Bowler with Chiefs is seeing his career coming to an end.
  • Chester Taylor, RB, Chi
Once a reliable 3rd down back, now he's getting up there in years. Signed by Cardinals.
  • Sammy Morris, RB, NE
Was a great role player for Patriots and had a number of big games, but age and an influx of youth at RB cost him a job.
  • Lito Sheppard, CB, Oak
Longtime Eagles starter had been reduced to a role player. Couldn't beat out the speed merchants on the Raiders.
  • Mardy Gilyard, WR, StL
2010 3rd round pick for Rams, thought to be a "steal" at the time. Signed by Jets.
  • Donnie Avery, WR, StL
2008 2nd round pick for Rams, thought to be competing for starting job. Never impressed the new coaching staff that came in last year.
  • Desmond Clark, TE, Chi
Used to start for Bears. Mike Martz' offense doesn't use TE much.
  • Jacob Ford, DE, Ten
Flashed ability to get sacks as a starter a few years ago.
  • Tavares Gooden, ILB, Bal
Former starter, caught up in U of Miami scandal. Signed by 49ers.
  • Perrish Cox, CB, Den
Lots of talent, returned kicks and started some last year, of–the–field problems cost him in the draft, and now a roster spot
  • Myron Rolle, S, Ten
Rhodes scholar cut after one season
  • Kyle Moore, DE, TB
Former starter last year with Buccaneers.
  • Stylez G. White, DE, Min
Former Buccaneers starter, 24 sacks in 4 years.
  • Damione Lewis, DT, Hou
Former Rams and Panthers starter (23.5 career sacks) and 2001 1st round pick. Very experienced, but that also means he's get old.

Star-divide

Former Chargers

  • Igor Olshansky, DE, Dal
Solid, but replaceable player. Even if the Chargers had an opening I doubt he'd return.
  • Buster Davis, WR, Buf
    Anyone surprised?
  • Fred Bennett, CB, Ari
Emergency acquisition last year, could be that again?
  • Gartrell Johnson, RB, Atl
Chargers wasted draft pick can't make a team.
  • Cyril Obiozor, LB, Ari
Emergency acquisition last year, could be that again?
  • Adam Terry, OT, Ten
Emergency acquisition last year, won't be that again.
  • David Nixon, LB, Mia
Former PS member, probably won't return.
  • Dedrick Epps, TE, Mia
Another wasted pick by Chargers that can't make a team.

Myron Rolle is actually a pretty good player

I’d rather see him in San Diego than Gamble. Wonder if Rolle covers kicks…

The Padres are good, but make no mistake: we've gotta beef up the linwup.

How about instead of C.J. Wallace?

That would make more sense.

I'm telling ya

someone on the coaching staff really likes Wallace…my guess is it’s a combination of Bissachia/Wilks that both like his physicality and want to give him a year to see what he can do. And the rest of the organization might go along with it knowing that Sanders has injury issues and is only on a one year deal. If Wallace could bring even half the physicality that Sanders does then he would be a worthy addition

*Wallace, not Gamble

Blah. What was I thinking. Gamble’s earned his spot here, no questions asked.

wasn't Epps a 6th round pick?

Plenty of those wash out quick. Hard to call those a wasted pick.

Ditto

the mere fact that Chargers late-round draft picks are still getting signed by teams for training camp shows that the Chargers weren’t the only ones that saw talent in them, and that they at least have enough talent to go to a camp and challenge for a roster spot. I would call them more of a “wasted pick” if they washed out and never got picked up for a training camp anywhere else.

so would they be considered "overrated"?

since they go from camp to camp. roster to roster and then get released?

The peanut gallery has spoken!!!

I don't think so

They are just caught in a numbers game, they are good enough when the rosters increase from 53 to 90 players, and even when they get cut down from 90 to 80, but there are just too many other good players. It’s clear that they have talent or they wouldn’t keep landing on teams

by jkvandal on Sep 6, 2011 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Also

Every now and then they get into the 53 man after being a few years on PS. At least in the Chargers organization that happens frequently.

So, it's not a waste if a pick doesn't make a roster

Because it’s a late round pick. Might want to look up the definition of waste. Because I certainly wouldn’t call it anything but that.

That being said, it’s not a major waste. They are certainly picks worth gambling on. Much like playing the lottery is gambling and that lottery ticket becomes waste once you’ve lost.

I for one am surprised to see Buster Davis cut

He always seemed totally NFL caliber, when healthy…

And by Buffalo

Checking around to see if it is injury-related.
