Chargers Lose Tolzien, Fill Six of Eight Spots on Practice Squad

You may have spent the last two days barbecuing or laying on the beach, but A.J. Smith and the Chargers coaches have been hard at work cutting players and then signing some of them back.

They filled eight of the six practice squad spots with guys that they cut. Here's the list:

Scott Tolzien, the Wisconsin QB that everyone at Chargers Park was impressed with, did so well against the 49ers that they claimed him off of waivers. Center Colin Baxter was claimed by the Jets and Seyi Ajirotutu lands with Rod Chudzinski, Ron Rivera and Legedu Naanee with the Carolina Panthers. Ogemdi Nwagbuo has not yet been signed.

Star-divide

I don't pay enough attention to practice squads to know what to make of this group. I know that the Chargers usually try and have one guy from each position group (Oline, Dline, RB, WR/TE, LB) and that's what they have here. I wasn't impressed by Bryant or Taylor, and have to imagine that they're at risk of being replace at some point during the season.

honestly, kinda sucks to lose these guys

but i’m happy that got a real job somewhere else

Tolzien played his way into a job

with the 49ers in the last preseason game. He looked to be a great long term replacement for Volek. Too bad he didn’t make it to the pratice squad.
Will miss Tutu, but Waters showed as much potential.

And you might want to correct the article:
They filled eight of the six practice squad spots … Should be filled 6 of 8.

"They filled 8 of the 6 practice squad spots"

How’s that work exactly?

New CBA

Allows for partial spots on the PS.

Question. Not sure if anyone knows

whether or not practice squad eligibility is on a per-team basis? That is, if a player (like OG, for example) is not eligible to join the Chargers’ practice squad, does that imply he cannot join another team’s practice squad?

by HuangDi on Sep 4, 2011 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

I am pretty sure it's a league-wide basis

Therefore, OG is not eligible to join anyone’s practice squad.

To me the Chargers didn't lose Tolzien

they let him go because they thought he had very little value. I mean if they thought he had some big time long term value they could have kept him ahead of someone like Gachkar. He was fighting for the third string QB job and he lost out to nobody, the team decided they would rather have nobody then Tolzien. I for one will not lose any sleep over it, which reminds me I have to get up at 3:00 a.m. tomorrow. Goodnight.

We need to make a run.

i think was their logic on that one…LB’s and speed guys on ST is what we need to add some more W’s.

They would have liked to have him on the PS, but were willing to chance losing him.

It’s not a big loss, but it’s not ideal either.

Good for Tolzein, but I feel sorry for Tutu having to go and play on an awful, awful Panthers squad

He should have success, though!

Don’t know what to think about the release of OG, I like the addition of Frank the Tank to the PS, and keeping Coop as an active player is a big mistake IMO… his injury, plus the Na’il Diggs signing make him rather redundant except as a leader, which is a role he could have easily fulfilled by retiring and having the Chargers grab him as an assistant coach.

The Padres are good, but make no mistake: we've gotta beef up the linwup.

It's going to take a little while for Diggs to get up to speed though

Cooper sounds like he might almost be day-to-day from what KA has been reporting, plus they need to be convinced that Diggs can actually make a decent transition to our version of the 3-4 (unless of course he has been brought in with that masterplan of a move to the 4-3!).

It's funny...

I though they drafted Liuget because he was really good against the run, he really jumped at RBs. But then there he was rushing the QB like a 4-3 DE in preseason…

It’s funny… until it’s not.

losing tolzien was a certainty...

but i’m happy Summers is on the practice squad. but i could almost certainly see Tutu an Leegs reunited with Rivera and Chud. more targets for their #1 draft pick. but losing a Colin baxter was a disappointment.

Baxter to me is the worst loss

A 3rd QB, a developmental WR, and a scrub DT/DE are all guys I will definitely miss, but we needed depth at center. Both our backup and starting center are not signed in 2012, one is injury prone and the other is nicked up. Good luck to Tutu

Tolzein

He is purely a West Coast offense QB.

Charlie Bryant has been moved from DT to OT

Being 6’6 and 320 lbs, those measurables sound more like an OT, so that is something to keep an eye on.

good.

if he can’t get to the QB, he should stand there and be a tree in someone eles way.

Good

was surprised that the team even wanted to bring him back to the practice squad after watching him in several practices. To me he just looked like he had gotten by his whole career on brute strength and no technique and it clearly showed when he worked out next to the rest of our DLinemen, he just looked awkward and clumsy at times (in my completely unprofessional opinion).

Will be interesting to see how he does on the practice squad…he seems a bit tall to be an interior lineman so its interesting that they decided to keep 2 OT’s on the practice squad when we just locked McNeill and Clary up long term. I guess Dombrowski is coming up on the end of his contract, so maybe that’s why.

by jkvandal on Sep 5, 2011 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions

i think that was the point of switching him.

it happens a lot in the NFL. he was just a big guy that din’t have any DE skills, then they probably decided “maybe they could use his size, and develop him as a blocker”. Bigger, Stronger, Faster, are 3 key things that will get a coaches attention the quickest.

anyone else not loving loosing Tutu??????

I kind of saw him as an eventual replacement for Floyd. A big WR who could stretch the field and win jump balls.

He proved he could play last year, in real games, where it really counted.

I read an article (I think on this blog) last week that said he’d really dedicated himself to ST’s because he thought that’s where he could really help the team this year (as WR is a little full).

So we kept Walters (who I did like), but doesn’t it kind of seem like Walters and Vincent Brown both fill the same role……….slot receiver type, precision route runners. Plus………Brown was hurt for the majority of camp/pre-season.

Floyd only signed a 2 year deal and is on the wrong side of 30. Crayton is only signed through this year and is out because he just had bone spurs scoped from his ankle.

I wouyld have felt a lot more comfortable with a young, big, developmental WR to eventually plug the hole Floyd will leave when he’s done in SD.

Why let a guy go who could have contributed on special teams and proved he can start games at the NFL level in a pinch?

Really didn’t expect this.

Not a big loss. Borderline NFL player. He wasn't one of the top six receivers on the team.

I was with you on this one at first when I heard the news.

I guess the team’s outlook on Tutu is this: they can find a player like him anywhere on the street. PR17 made him look good at receiver last year, not the other way around. I guess they figure the skillset that he brings to the table is more replaceable than the skill set that Walters brings.

He wasn’t particularly fast, and his hands were only somewhat reliable…the only thing he brought to the table was his height.

Now, here’s the thing about getting rid of Tutu that leaves me the most worried and isn;t really being mentioned: He has been Mathews’ roommate since college. I would like to think that I don’t have to worry about Mathews as he is a grown man with a promising career, but he already showed a lack of maturity with some of his decisions this past offseason, at least as far as workouts go. Without really knowing anything about these players personally, I can only assume that Tutu was a good influence on Mathews since Tutu was always on the bubble on being on the team having not been drafted and might have kept Mathews motivated with his own workouts…now Tutu is off to Carolina and Mathews is a rich young man living by himself (I think the Silver Fox said in PB).
