Serious Business: 9/4 San Diego Chargers Links

San Diego Chargers cutdown analysis - Bill Williamson
What's next: The Chargers on Saturday signed veteran linebacker Na'il Diggs. The 12-year veteran is a leader, and he could push for playing time at inside linebacker. San Diego will probably look at the waiver wire for help in the secondary, offensive line and receiver.

Could Scott Tolzien be claimed? - Bill Williamson
The San Diego Tribune put out an interesting nugget. It says it’s no sure thing that undrafted rookie quarterback Scott Tolzien will make it onto the San Diego Chargers’ practice squad. The paper thinks he could be claimed.

NFL teams cut down to get to 53-man roster limit - ESPN.com
NFL teams on Saturday pared their rosters to reach the 53-man limit for the 2011 season.

Final San Diego Chargers 53-Man Roster - John Gennaro
The cuts have been made and they were mostly guys you didn't know. Na'il Diggs was picked up after the Rams cut him, meaning the Chargers needed to cut 28 guys in all. Here are those guys:

Former Pats safety Brandon Meriweather leads list of big-name roster cuts - Doug Farrar
Meriweather made the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons over more deserving safeties line San Diego's Eric Weddle(notes) (yet another reason not to take the Pro Bowl very seriously), but Weddle now has a new $50 million contract, and Meriweather is without an NFL job at the moment.

Chargers keep popular receiver Walters, pack on LBs - Kevin Acee
Cancel the fan riots. Bryan Walters made the team.

Running 2011 Cut-Down Day Thread - The Outsiders
We will keep this thread updated with the latest big-name cuts on September 3. Not every cut, just the players you may know. That includes PUP and IR.

Breaking Down The Tight Ends and Fullback - Bewsaf
Since Gates and McMichael were out Kory Sperry had some opportunities to show what he could do in pass protection.  He held his own but did give up 1 pressure.  Doesn’t look like he is going to steal McMichaels job but he did a decent job in pass protection.

Yeah

If Alex Smith were my starting QB, I’d claim him too…

shucks

Next year I hope we draft a mid-round QB with good backup potential. Preferably with long, flowing locks and expert clipboard holding skillz, and keep 3 QB on the roster for a year.

First report on the PS has:

Bront Bird, Frank Summers, Charlie Bryant, Steve Schilling, Traye Simmons, Brad Taylor.

So 2 more guys to go

by TJBOLT on Sep 4, 2011 12:33 PM PDT reply actions

Nice that Summers made in through

Bird and Schilling are good gets, and pick machine Simmons is a scrub the team likes. I think they will add one more LB and OL, or maybe a QB

I'm guessing the other corner Broadway, and OLB Ihenacho

will be the other 2 PS guys.

What do you guys know about Brad Taylor and Charlie Bryant?

Frank Summers is so good that nobody else wanted him on their 53 either.

They're intimidated by how awesome he is.

Kind of OT but

do they get paid to play on the PS? I assume they do, but I don’t know. How much if they do?

6/10/2010 - Tra Thomas signs with the Chargers
8/21/2010 - Tra Thomas retires.

That was fast.

I wonder about Charlie Bryant

I went to a few practices and watched the D-line close up. Bryant is a mountain of a man listed at 6-8, 320 but possibly bigger than that, with huge feet and long arms. Athletically he didn’t look like a D-lineman. He wasn’t very smooth and had trouble getting low. He’s too tall for an interior player and not fast enough to be a speed rusher.

However, he looks like a great prospect for conversion to an Offensive Lineman, like they did with Dielman. I wonder if that’s their plan.

6 '6.5" at 318 is what he measured at his proday

He definitely could be asked to move to OT. Chargers usually had had more luck developing OL, and just going with scrub vets for DL help when need be.

Really?

Nice call, that is some seriously good speculation.

Matt Cassel is injured c possible cracked rib

He might not play first game…..this has serious ramifications for my fantasy team, as I don’t think that J Charles will be able to put up big numbers. Also, this is good for the Chargers if you were worried about the Chiefs contending for the division.
I don’t think it is fully confirmed yet, but here is the initial story from KC Star:

In any case

I picked up Buffalo’s D….if he doesn’t play Bills gonna smell blood and Merriman will be hungry. If any of y’all need a one week potential homerun defense this could be it.
