Ask A Chiefs Fan - Chiefs vs Chargers

Hello, San Diego!   As the Chiefs and Chargers begin to prepare for their upcoming faceoff, we fans have the opportunity to find out a bit more about each other's teams.  Both teams are coming off losses, but not all losses are equal.  The Chargers lost a tough game to perhaps the best team in the NFL, the Patriots.  It's never fun to lose, but it's understandable when the loss is on the road to a team like New England.

Star-divide

The Chiefs also lost on the road, and while there's no question that the Lions are an up and coming franchise, they aren't yet the caliber of the Patriots.  More to the point, the Chiefs didn't simply lose, they were hammered, pounded and left for all but dead.  To add injury to insult, the Chiefs lost one of the best RB's in the game, Jamaal Charles, to a season-ending torn ACL.  That's on top of the loss of Pro-Bowl Safety Eric Berry in Week 1 and last year's "super rookie" Tight End Tony Moeaki in preseason.  Another notable loss was Brandon Siler, a name familiar to Chargers fans.

As the rivalry renews, a lot of questions are swirling around, perhaps not the least of which is the situation with Chiefs Head Coach Todd Haley, who is rumored to be on the "hot seat" for now.  A win this weekend would go a long ways to buying Haley plenty of time, as well as a long ways to restoring some badly needed confidence among the Chiefs players.  A loss, on the other hand?  Difficult to judge, but suffice it to say that things could get ugly sooner rather than later.

For now, though, and up until kickoff this Sunday, it's time to ask questions, give answers and share our thoughs about our respective teams.  As always, let's hope it's a great game, an exciting game and an injury-free game.

How, if at all, are you going to cover your personnel losses?

Who are you bringing in, and how do you see their chances of measuring up?

And welcome.

Let's see

We have Pope at TE which isn’t the best but a big target in the end zone. We have some solid depth at LB so Siler won’t be as missed as the others. We can never replace Berry or Charles. However, I think we need to bring someone in to help at Safety. I don’t see McGraw or Piscatelli(sp?) lasting. Our RB situation is decent since McCluster is a similar type runner as Charles. We just can’t let McCluster run wild in the middle—he’ll get killed. LaRon McClain should take some carries too. It is going to be a long, long season for the Chiefs.

by Chiefsfan85 on Sep 20, 2011 1:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Considering the state of the roster in '08

We haven’t had the luxury of drafting for depth over the past couple years, so losing any starter is pretty much going to open up a big hole for opponents to exploit. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the three players that are lost are at the top of the roster.

Having said that, the team isn’t as bad as it looks based on the scores from the last two games. As Chiefsfan85 pointed out, the running game should still be okay, just not explosive. Bowe is still a tough matchup for corners, & the addition of Breason helps (though doesn’t offset the loss of our TE Moeaki by any means). We still have one of the best corner tandems in Flowers & Carr, but Flowers doesn’t match up well against your tall receivers. Our DL has been okay (though many would disagree with me on this) and we still have one of the better pass rushes with Hali and the additions of Justin Houston & Cameron Sheffield.

Basically, on paper there is no way the Chargers should lose either game to KC this year…if your players bring their A game it’s just not going to happen. I have no doubt SD wins this week, none at all. KC could win the Halloween game because of the circumstances (night game, home crowd, etc.) but it would probably have to be a similar situation to that of opening night ‘10. It’s also possible that Cassel will have ‘settled down’ by then, and he’ll probably have our first round WR Jon Baldwin back from his hand injury…which could help.

One guy we may be bringing in in a few months is a QB from Stanford. You may have heard of him.

that's the only hope many of us have right now

with 3 irreplaceable players out for the year, & with the exception of Charles, no serviceable depth behind them.

and the Chiefs put the HAMMER DOWN!!!!

Commend you guys

for hanging in there. know its got to be a rough start so far, and I never like seeing a player get hurt, even if he is on a rival.

what do you expect out of this season?

who do you see as coach next year if this slide continues?

who should the chargers worry about? (besides bowe)

by cameronm on Sep 20, 2011 10:15 AM PDT reply actions

Thanks

I expect improvement each and every week. I know with our schedule and injuries it is going to be tough to win a game. I’m not sure about the coaching issue right now. I am a supporter of Haley but it is his fault that the team isn’t better prepared. I think that the Chargers should worry about our pass rush. It has improved slightly but Hali will always be a concern to opposing teams.

I strongly doubt you guys will go 0-16.

Playoffs might not be in the cards, but if you can go from worst to first to worst again, you can get back up again in 2012….

good questions, cameron

not a lot for the Chargers to worry about on our offense, other than Bowe … McCluster is amazingly quick and fast, if he has any space at all he’s gone … almost a smaller, shiftier version of Charles, but has a tendency to fumble the rock far too often

not being the guy in charge I’m not at all sure what the powers-that-be have in mind, but if it was me I’d dust off the Hank Stram Playbook circa 1968 (vs Raiders) and go with a Fullhouse-T Formation: 2 TE’s 2 FB’s 1 RB (that game was something like 65 runs and 3 passing plays, I’d like Cassel’s chances of not turning the ball over if we limit him like that for the rest of the year)

as for the rest of the season, I’m thinking the main thing (at least what I’d like to see) is a show of toughness and character … losing tough, hard fought and close games is one thing, getting blown out by record scores is beyond disheartening

as for next year’s coach … if this continues as it has been, we MIGHT see someone in sooner than that … if I had to guess on a replacement now, from our current staff either Crennel or Zorn

hopefully the team gets it turned around soon and that issue is at least delayed for awhile

Agreed.

One huge upside to being a Chargers fan is that they just about never get blown out. In Rivers’s 89-game career to date, we’ve been unable to get within one TD in the fourth quarter twice.

Nice

of you to post. I’m sorry about the injuries, I hate seeing players go down.

A few things I never get. Why did they let Waters and Gonzalez get away? Is the Chiefs Oline really that good?

What’s up with Baldwin, is he going to play? I know there was a fight, but is he out for the season?

It seemed like there were a bunch of vets in FA this year and I believe the Chiefs are like a billion dollars under the cap. Usually the Chargers stay away from the FA market too, but it was curious to me that the Chiefs didn’t move after some second tier guys. What was the official line on how quiet they were?

How do you all feel about Cassel at this point? Anyone hoping for bad luck to bring good Luck?

Thanks, we hate the injuries too :)

They let Waters go because they drafted his replacement in ‘10 and he was ready to play. The guy handled Suh pretty well so there’s no dropoff in talent there. As for Gonzalez, he wasn’t crazy about staying through another regime change, and when the Falcons offered a 2nd round pick it was hard to pass up, considering his age.

Baldwin broke his thumb in a locker room scuffle. He still hasn’t practiced, but just got his splint off last week…I’m guessing he’ll be ready by the 2nd game against you guys.

There’s a lot of debate among Chiefs fans regarding the lack of spending…they were about 32m under the cap before extending Flowers. Probably the biggest thing is that Carr & Bowe are both FAs after this season, so the assumption is that they want the money there to extend those guys as well. This and it just seems that Pioli doesn’t like overpaying for players, he’d rather bring them in as rookies, or on one year contracts to see how they fit in first. As for the official line…there’s never an official line on anything personnel related. :)

Regarding Luck, of course there’s a lot of talk about him (we need SOMETHING to look forward to). Personally, I’m not going to start thinking about it until after week 5. After you guys (a loss), we’ve got MN at home & then away at Indy. If we manage to lose both of those contests I’ll accept that we are truly awful & probably won’t win more than a game or two. I just hope for a few entertaining games…hopefully starting this week!

Maybe

it’s watching Gonzalez tear us up for so many years, but I keep thinking that with another receiving target the KC offense could really take off. It would also take the heat off Bowe; I have to say Moeaki looked good to me too though. Baldwin had a a reputation for being difficult, I guess that didn’t go down with Jones.

Those are good answers, as a fan I’m not sure I’d buy the FA rationale though. Next year they will be forced to spend though and likely have a solid draft position.

Cassel = There isn't enough "u's" on Charles Barkley's keyboard to say how tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrible he is

We don’t need bad luck to get Luck. We’ve had enough bad luck for an entire decade in the last 6 weeks or so. I’d personally want to win 2 games if it means we get Luck than win 4 games then draft another LSU defensive tackle.

Ha

I don’t know if I’d go as far as you but I do think the Pats had him in a system with receivers that had talent leaking out their nose and made him look a bit better than he was. Then last year he tore it up, but mostly against second tier secondaries.

How is Tyson developing?

Cassel isn't awful. He's just not a true franchise QB.

Most QBs decline when hurt. Kyle Orton can’t play hurt. Jason Campbell and Philip Rivers can, but Cassel is better than Campbell when healthy, and Rivers still was off his game when forced to play on serious injuries: it’s just that Rivers off his game is still tolerably good.

When he gets healthy, he’ll get back to mediocrity in a hurry, and the Chiefs will be pseudo-dangerous.

by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Sep 21, 2011 8:26 AM PDT up reply actions

To the outside world Cassel appears adequate.

That is not the case. He has a terrible arm strength and accuracy, but his biggest problem is that he can’t read coverages and make progressions. It is first read, dump off or sack. These problems we masked at the Pats by all world receivers that dictated predictable coverages and allowed Cassel just to force the ball into his first read. In KC last year the dominant running game created predictable coverages and one on one matchups that let Cassel throw to force the ball to his first read.

If you can contain the run (don’t sell stop it) while not stacking the box allowing you to play a variety of coverages you will give Cassel huge problems.

This weekend watch Cassel’s eyes when he drops back to throw. He can not scan the field and almost never seems to find an ope receiver who was not the first read in his progressions.

Same comments re Castillo

Some not so knowledgeable fans say the same about Luis Castillo. The job of the 3-4 DE is not really to get sacks, they are just an unexpected bonus.

I don't mean any disrespect,

Is Andrew Luck’s name being brought up among Chiefs fans? It’s certainly not a bad coup for having a tough season.

by sdpads24 on Sep 20, 2011 11:33 AM PDT reply actions

Luck is being brought up quite vocally.

I personally think that KC is a frontrunner in the Luck Sweepstakes. There’s really no evidence to show that Chiefs will turn things around (and lots of evidence to the contrary) so I think there are some of us feel that things are going to get worse before they get better. Our schedule only gets tougher, and a team as lost looking as KC has been since the playoff loss last season is in real danger of forgetting what winning is like, and accepting their mediocrity. That’s the path to 0-16 or 1-15, a path which leads to Luck.

And Seattle.

Maybe their soft division will pad their schedule, though. ‘Course, you know what makes the NFCW so “soft”? Seattle. If they were a REAL playoff team, that division would be average. This year, they’re not winning six, and their floor is about 2 wins. KC and Indy could easily win 3 games each, so I’d say it’s a three-way race so far, with Indy, KC, and Seattle.

Other teams that could Suck for Luck: Minnesota is just a player away from being completely devoid of offense. They’re not the ‘08 Lions, but they could win 8 games, or they could win 1 game. Cincinnati will probably win at least four, but you never know. The other NFCW teams will have their win total inflated by the division. I think Miami is better than the detractors claim, but I could be wrong. Their sked is wicked, which doesn’t help. But both of those teams will probably end up drafting outside the top five.

By a third-year-in-a-row worst-in-the-league defense. Even if Adrian Peterson goes down for the rest of the season, you need a tremendously bad defense to go winless, and the Vikings don’t have it.

losing Berry seems like the biggest hit

Not looking past next week, but it is gonna be an uphill fight to beat the Chargers. That said stranger things have happened before.

It seems like KC still matches up pretty well against the Raiders. What do you think the Chief’s chances are against the demon spawn?

by Trendsearcher on Sep 20, 2011 7:16 PM PDT reply actions

Berry is a huge loss, especially as we have little depth at Safety position

but losing a RB like Jamaal Charles is even bigger, I think … an elite back who’s a threat to break a long TD run on any given play is a huge loss

definitely going to be an uphill struggle against the Chargers, you have a very talented team … Rivers, Jackson, Gates, etc have the makings of one of the best offensive units around, will be quite the challenge for the Chiefs defense

as for the Raiders, they still have a potent team in my view, but right now I can’t even see that far down the road …. one game at a time and hope for the best, at least in terms of effort and execution … all one can reasonably expect

Berry is the best all-around player

But I agree with upamtn, for this team Charles is a bigger loss. The D has enough good players to somewhat compensate for Berry not being there, but losing Charles makes the QB that much more important, and ours is below average (putting it nicely). The running game will survive with Thomas Jones and La’Ron McClain, but the plays where Charles would go 20-30 yards are now going to go 6-12 yards. With Moeaki also on IR, teams can double cover Bowe quite easily while not having to be too concerned about the run.

As for the Raiders, we get handled by big defensive lines so it’s really not a good matchup.

Honestly, the only teams we have a reasonable shot at beating this year are the Vikings, Colts, Dolphins & Donkeys. I’ll throw the Raiders in as well because they usually find a way to beat themselves 4-5 times every year.

I imagine at this point in time, it would be relatively positive (though with some trepidation);

there’s a general sense that it just isn’t going to get down with Cassel, and a number of fans are already clamoring for them to give Ricky Stanzi (QB we drafted in the 5th round) a shot, even though it would really be premature to throw him in there. With McDaniels’s QB reputation, I think fans would be open to it, Donkeys connection aside.
