But I sincerely hope that the play calling on defense was a shadow of the schemes the Manusky has in store for the regular season. But once again there is no excuse for poor tackling and not squaring up to hit.

It's both

They played a vanilla scheme again and were missing some important guys. But in the end, they didn’t perform in even the simplified defense due to poor technique and communication.

Sanders/Spikes/Weddle/etc seemed distinterested and injury averse last night to me

I am kind of counting on seeing that higher gear turned on in 10 days.

Not buying it

I don’t think that players like Sanders, Spikes and Weddle can step onto a football field with pads on, play against another NFL team and be disinterested.

I am not saying that we should be in a panic, just saying that the Cards and Niners starters on offense kicked the Chargers first unit’s ass.

The scheme and a couple of guys not playing are good reasons/excuses but you only have to make excuses when you suck, so the fact that they need to make them is not a good thing.

Sanders created a moment of fear for me last night

… on one of his tackles his form was bad. Head down, diving under the running back. Not sure if he was trying to force a fumble, but it is a good way to get paralyzed. Definitely not the type of risk to be taking in a preseason game.

I do think Manusky closed the play book after game 1

I haven’t seen many of the weird formations in the ensuing games. And the number of blitz plays and numbers of blitzers have been dialed down a lot. It is like Manusky decided to give us a peek at his book in game 1. Kinda like there’s a new DC in town and this is what I want to do. And then he shut the book. And maybe with a big mix of #2s and #3s in the lineup, with a new system, this is the right thing to do.

I just hope the D against the Viking next week looks more like preseason game 1, than the other 3 preseason games.

Not so worried.

Partly personnel (ROLB starting at LOLB), partly scheme, partly just a good running team.

Still, we’re going to have to get good starts this season, take away the run game, or there will be trouble.

I guess what worries me

is that people tend to forget that our defense is a large part of the reason this team starts slowly. Everyone has a short term memory and mentions the turnovers and the special teams last year, but our defense always takes a few games to gel, especially with a new coordinator.

Yes

I always say we’re going to win no matter what,because I’m optimistic and a home team supporter. With that being said I genuinely have serious worries about the Vikings game. We can’t play the run well at all. Adrian Peterson is better than ALL of the RB’s we’ve seen in the pre season and it’s looking like we will have a really hard time stopping him.

That was my major concern is on Defense. On the flip side if we play from behind we will get to see another one of those games with PR17 trying to win the game through the air which will limit Mathews to very little carries,thus making us very one dimensional. Lets be honest we’ve seen this happen many of times, I think that’s why I’ve been complaining about Mathews play as well.He had that great run last night and I hope he can have more of those.

I think I can speak for a lot of other fans when I say I’m sick of the slow starts and playing catch up and hope it doesn’t happen this year.
