San Diego Chargers Trim Roster Down, Cut 10 Players

Don't worry, that's not Todman. It's Shawnbrey McNeal, circa 2010. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

As per NFL rules, the Chargers need to cut their roster of 90 players down to 80 by the end of today. They've been announcing the released players slowly, most likely to give them a chance to meet with the player before he finds out that he's been cut online, and so far we know of eight all ten of them.

Outside of Binn, who apparently has struggled to stay healthy and may finally be done with the NFL at the ripe age of 39, none of these guys even had a chance to make the final 53-man roster.

Star-divide

Leman and Otterson pretty much lost their chance to make the squad when Andrew Gachkar and Steve Schilling, similar players that are younger and more talented, were drafted this year. The rest of the guys were brought into camp as undrafted free agents this season, and were unfortunate in that the team has stayed relatively healthy. There was simply no spots for them.

I don't expect any of these guys to land on the Chargers practice squad, but it also wouldn't surprise me to see Otterson back in San Diego at some point. Despite lots of depth at OT, the coaches have always been high on him.

I expect David Binn to retire, as he doesn't seem the type that was ever really in it for the money. I hope he ends up sticking with the Chargers in some sort of coaching capacity after he hangs his cleats up officially.

Scott Bair of the North County Times tweeted

That Brandon Sullivan cut was actually an injury settlement (knee). Doesn’t really affect anything except Sullivan’s pocketbook and maybe any future dealings between him and the team.

I hope they keep both, but I'm not optimistic.
