Tim Dobbins released by Miami

So Miami recently released Tim Dobbins

I originally anticipated that Weddle and Burnett would be the teams top 2 defensive priorities as far as getting guys re-signed.  I really didn't expect to lose Burnett and Brandon Siler.  I thought worst case scenario maybe Cooper and one of those two would be gone.

Would it be worth grabbing Dobbins, who was productive in San Diego before we sent him off to Miami to fill the void left by the departure of Burnett and Siler?

I think it could be good

I totally think AJ is still perusing the waiver wire for a Barnes type pick up at ILB. Obviously Dobbins pass coverage is suspect.

As a sixth year player, could Dobbins be too expensive at the minimum? What would that be? Like $750k?

He's a very good blitzer.

And our secondary is really, really deep.

Yes, but...

I was just thinking about him the other day when I was trying to single-handedly solve the Chargers’ linebacker issues. Anticipating Spikes breaking down the way Derrick Smith did, and Mouton/Butler panning out as well as the scouts who projected them to not even be drafted, the long and short of it is the Bolts need help in the middle.

The “but” of course is that Dobbins will never happen. No way A.J. revisits that, and no way Manusky says, “Yeah, go out and get him!”

Does AJ have a beef with Dobbins?

I thought Dobbins left town due to a depth decision at the time? Does he have baggage?

I thought the Dolphins really wanted him

I never heard anything about any strife with regard to Dobbins. I just figured the team’s depth of average players all going into FA at the same time meant somebody could be traded.

At the time he left - the Chargers were really deep at LB

AJ had just given a bunch of money to Tucker and Cooper, we had SP & SM, drafted English. Dobbins was third or fourth on the chart. A UDFA. Limited College experience.

I thought he was one of the character guys AJ likes. But the Chargers had questions at other areas that forced some difficult decisions.

Dobbins was the cherry on top

of the bounty sent to Miami that allowed AJ to draft Ryan Mathews. Steep price to pay, totally negating the momentary glee from fleecing Seattle in the Whitehurst deal. I personally would’ve preferred not trading up, drafting Jahvid Best instead of Mathews, releasing Sproles instead of LT, and keeping Dobbins and a host of second round picks. Alas, I’m not AJ Smith.
And no, no baggage to speak of.

Just seems like it would make sense

We know he can play. He was a solid rotational contributor. I get that we may have been loaded at the time and he was way down the depth chart and maybe it didn’t make sense to re-sign him prior to shipping him to Miami.

But now we’re not loaded at ILB, the top tier ILB free agents are gone, and he could probably be had on the cheap. I’d rather have a known commodity and be pleasantly surprised if Butler ends up being the answer than miss out and we discover it’s going to be aother year before any of the rookie ILBs are going to be meaningful contributors.

Glad someone made this post.

When I saw the NFL wire that Dobbins had been cut, I was thinking of posting the same question. Re-acquiring Dobbins wouldn’t necessarily set the world on fire, but might be a solid, inexpensive insurance policy for Butler/Mouton not being ready to start right away.

Remember when they were talking about getting SM, SP and English on the field at once?

Well, imagine Barnes and LaBoy both coming in off the edges, with SP threatening up the middle. I could see it on long yardage, maybe not more than 10-20 plays a season.

They’re going to sign somebody. Dobbins would be a good choice.
