Cool
He did well enough last year and you never know when Gates’ feet will start hurting him again.

That takes the reason prisoner?"
I'm also surprised at the minumum salary
I thought he did well enough last year that he would have some interest from other teams.

I'm guessing
He’s at the point in his career where he likes living here, he knows he’s well used (especially if Gates misses time again) and he’ll have a shot a Super Bowl. Better to get a deal in place than to have teams go in another direction.
Also, the veteran minimum for a player with his service time is almost $1M.

What are the chances he'll get an extension this year?

McMichael will run on one-year deals for whatever's left of his career
But he’s a TE, and sometimes they play on awhile, especially as rotational players, so there may be more one-year deals in his future.

This is what I was talking about
saying that some guys can be had for some pretty darn good deals in this frenzied market.
I’m telling you this lockout hurt more people than just fans, many of these older vets were sitting out there and just waiting and as a result would be more willing to take a bit of a paycut to ensure that they land on a team for at least another season.
I don't think it increased that much
But, there’s a big difference between a 4 year vet and 10 year vet. Veteran minimum is a misnomer as it increases with increased service time. I’m not positive that is something that was added with the new CBA, I just saw the numbers when I was looking at the new CBA stuff.

I think it must be around that 1M range
Look at what Binn has been commanding. Long Snapper or not… Back up TE and rotten Special teamer or not… years of service creep up to a big number.
Bahhh maybe McMichael is right call at back up TE right now. It is not like the team can upgrade at every position every year.

Good
As Rivers said many times last year, McMichael is a staring caliber tight end. Great to have a backup who would start on probably 20 other teams.
Better than an awkwardly gazing caliber one.
