One GM speculated Martin’s CFL rights would likely go to a team that has lots of picks and could afford to use one on a player they don’t need/won’t see right away. By that logic, perhaps the Calgary Stampeders, who have four of the first 14 selections on Sunday, could take a chance on Martin.
The risk of drafting Vaughn Martin
There's plenty of buzz in Canada about a CFL team using a first-round pick on San Diego Chargers DE Vaughn Martin. This would give that team exclusive rights to Vaughn, should he end up in the CFL at some point.
Martin, a fourth-round selection of the Chargers in 2009, is signed through 2012 with the team.

With the Chargers continuing to draft DL...
It could make sense for Martin to consider th CFL.
He’s not taking Castillio’s job any time soon. They really have a quite a few solid DL players Garay, Thomas, OG and now Liuget has to eat at the trough too. Is Travis Johnson still on the team?
Anyhow Martin is gonna struggle to get reps. He might do better being a starter in the CFL.
Johnson is a FA
Right now our depth looks like this.
Castillo
Nwagbuo
Garay
Thomas
Liuget
Martin
Even if he can’t get a starting job here, though, he could be a solid backup for years (and make good money) and/or maybe find a starting spot somewhere else. Jacques Cesaire made a heck of a lot more in his career than he would’ve if he jumped to the CFL and dominated. Not to mention, the article suggests that Martin is a favorite of A.J. Smith.
Basically, I don’t see any reason for Vaughn to go to the CFL unless he finds himself without a job or job offers in the NFL.

He should try to crack an NFL roster first....
The amount of money you make in the CFL (~75-100 k for a non-star) is peanuts compared to the NFL base salary.
The way I see it, it’s a much better career move to be a back-up in the NFL then a full-time starter in the CFL. First, you get more money. Second, you don’t have to play in games as often so you are at less risk of injury. Third, training and recovery staffs in the NFL will likely be better at helping you both prevent and recover from injuries. Fourth and finally, San Diego vs Calgary…where would you prefer to live (remember he was born in Jamaica).

This happens every year in the CFL draft
Guys get their rights drafted and they never show up to play.
I’m pretty sure someone drafted Pacman Jones when he got
suspended from the NFL.

That almost made sense
There was some talk that he’d make the Ricky Williams trip

CFL would love him
but there isn’t a team in the CFL that could afford him. If he came here to play, he would be playing because he loves the game but, for what ever reason, could no longer work in the US.

I'm not so sure
He hasn’t been able to crack our starting line up. And we keep bringing in high round selections at DL. I could see him drop below 20% of the avalible reps the next season. At that point w/o the personal stats and reps he might not pull much in NFL FA.
Who knows maybe a CFL team chases him. He’s very popular in Canada, he could probably put a lot of butts in the seats.

ST
if all he did was play special teams, he would make more than probably 95% of the players in the CFL. Guys on practice squads make more than 90% of the players in the CFL.
It may be that he will reach the point where no team wants to pay him the veteran’s minimum in the NFL, then, like Doug Brown (ex Redskin), he may want to go play in the CFL where he might make $100k per season because he would likely be a dominant player.
Considering how raw Martin was when he got the San Diego (your top HS programs probably have better coaching than he received prior to going there) I am amazed he is able to get on the field at all. I think he has made incredible progress and by the time his contract is ready for renewal, he may be the guy you were hoping for when you drafted him.

I hope so!
Drafting Heyward means the Steelers are one d-lineman from rejuvenating their solid but old d-line. The only problem is they still need a NT to apprentice behind Hampton and I don’t know if Martin really fits the bill at NT. From what I have understood, he is more a DE.
The Steelers don’t tend to spend a lot on free agency though they have been known to sign solid if unspectacular players who fit their system but don’t break the bank.

He took reps at NT last year
From what I have understood, he is more a DE.
They rotated a lot last year. Garay carried the load, but OG, Thomas, and Martin got game reps. His bull rush was not as good as Garay or Thomas, but I think he might have been a little better than OG.
He’s definately got the the size, and getting bigger by the second.

They had him trim down to play DE.
From 330 to 319. It’s reasonable; a 330-lb man who can run the 40 in under 5 shouldn’t be playing the nose in a 3-4, maybe. Especially at 6’4".

NT vs DE
If he can occupy two or more blockers, open lanes for the LBs and makes plays in the running game he will be great at NT regardless of his height.
