What would you do if Watt/Jordan/Kerrigan/Smith are gone?

The chargers could very easily fall under worse case scenario where the 4 guys that seem to be target are gone, all it requires is small circumstances like Dallas or Washington both taking defensive players, or no OT/G are taken before the chargers pick, and obviously no team ahead of them reaches for the 3rd QB off the board.

Would you guys be comfortable with Muhammed Wilkerson, Cameron Heyward, Akeem Ayers or one of the OT's at 18, or would you guys trade up or down if 4 targeted guys are gone?

Or would you guys trade up to 9-10 and secure one of the targeted guys or a Robert Quinn, or maybe trade up to 14-15 where at least one of the targeted guys will be there, or would you trade down to 22-25 level, and take someone like Heyward or Ayers at a more reasonable value spot?

Being at 18, seems to be the spot where you could be the team without a chair when the music stops, what are your thoughts guys?

it would be interesting to see the mock that lead to those guys being gone. Is there still a top flight CB there? I think AJ might go towards another impact position if the top DE/OLB guys are gone.

I have seen other mocks that lead to that circumstance but here is one:

Phil Taylor ?!?! Neither of these guys seem to be putting themselves in the GM’s head(AJ Smith.)
If Bowers drops, I think AJ would be willing to take the risk on him.

I find myself wondering

If AJ might be tempted to swap with the Dolphins again. Pats and Jags are likely to take front 7 defensive guys too. AJ might be able to jump them by swapping a third rounder or so? That could be a good move.

Same thought crossed my mind

As we know Kevin Acee tends to be the voice man for AJ, and the buzz word around Acee is pass rusher, in a 3-4 D that’s OLB, so that means Smith & Kerrigan.

Kerrigan just sounds like an AJ pick, high production and motor, excellent intangibles, sounds just about right for an AJ pick.

by TJBOLT on Apr 25, 2011 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

This is liars month

Anything Acee is getting and reporting is most likely a smokescreen.

by whatsapip on Apr 25, 2011 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe, you're probably right but...

The buzz position las year was RB, and guess what, they took Ryan Mathews, so don’t be shocked on a OLB.

by TJBOLT on Apr 25, 2011 7:51 PM PDT up reply actions

b/c it was so blantantly obvious that we needed a rb last year.
This year is so open, I wouldn’t be surprised if they picked anything else except K, P, and QB

by whatsapip on Apr 25, 2011 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Not my experience.

AJ may blow smoke about specific players, but when he tells you what he thinks he needs, he’s probably being straight about it. Especially since most years most people tend to agree on what the team’s best draft option would be.

I'd be happy

with Kerrigan too. You just can’t have too many OLB’s in a 3-4; an upgrade at DE would be great too. A front seven play-maker is what I’d like to see.

I am a big fan of Wilkerson

watching the film, I like him more for our Defense than some of the other guys that are supposed to be taken higher. Most people have him and Cam Heyward going latter in the first. So I wouldn’t mind them trading down in the first round to Indy or Seattle and pick up some valuable pick in the forth and fifth round

BOOM!

by whatsapip on Apr 25, 2011 3:02 PM PDT reply actions

Level of competition and stamina are my concern with Wilkerson

Most of his games were against guys he should dominate, and he put up very good numbers, but will it translate to the NFL, which includes a position change.

Early reports are that he really needs to improve his stamina, that he got tired quickly in his workouts.

by TJBOLT on Apr 25, 2011 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions

understood

which is why I wouldn’t mind seeing us trade down to the bottom 8 to pick him up and an extra 4th or 5th.

BOOM!

by whatsapip on Apr 25, 2011 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

If the 4 guys are gone, either him or Heyward I would like in a trade down

No picks in the 4th and 5th round, make a drop down intriguing.

Not a big fan of Ayers, i would prefer Sheard or Reed in the second

Competition level was the #1 knock on English.

Pass-rushers should be evaluated primarily for their performance against the best collegiate OTs.

It matters more with pass rushers.

A small school receiver still plays on the same size field, catching a ball with the same aerodynamics, against a less-athletic version of the same DBs. A small school DE faces very different linemen. Because their opposition is subject to Planet Theory, you can’t really tell how a player will do against NFL teams unless you see him against NFL talent. That’s not quite as true (though still applicable) for WRs, but it’s everything for a DE/OLB prospect.

1St Rd Chargers

Trading back can work, but not more then six places. Either Heyward or Wilkerson should still be on the board. This could backfire, but theres so much depth in 2nd & 3rd RD this year it’s worth the risk. My surprise pick for the Chargers is moving up to top of second Rd and selecting TE K. Rudolph of ND.

how do you figure?

I’ve said true blocking TE, but later in the 6th and 7th

BOOM!

by whatsapip on Apr 25, 2011 11:57 PM PDT up reply actions

It's mostly the stigma of drafting a TE

When we have the best TE in the league.
I’m not disagreeing that a 6th or 7th with great blocking technique is a good addition, but in the 2nd seems like a waste.

6/10/2010 - Tra Thomas signs with the Chargers
8/21/2010 - Tra Thomas retires.

That was fast.

by SD FTW on Apr 26, 2011 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I like Rudolph, but they have other need way more urgent

The front seven on D, trumps any luxury pick like TE, I would very seriously consider him at pick 50, but I see no way he makes it down that far.

More likely a TE in the 6th or 7th round, as a pure blocker.

by TJBOLT on Apr 26, 2011 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions

If this is the requirement at TE

we should take a good look at Andre Smith, Virginia Tech. Good blocker & very likely to be available in 6ht, 7th, or even UDFA.

I like him at pick 50

Way to early in the first round, he’s my number one target if they don’t pick a 3-4 DE in the first round.

by TJBOLT on Apr 26, 2011 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

If no value to be had at OLB/DE, take a road-grader RT

But if Dallas goes defense, we should shop #50 to Washington to trade up. They may well take it. If that doesn’t work, we should keep trying to trade up. This scenario would maybe entice Miami or Minnesota into trading down. If that doesn’t work, then I’m not sure I’d want to make any deals at all. I don’t like the idea of trading down into the late first unless the value is just superb.

If the 4 targeted guys are gone, then there is a drop off

I think then you seriously consider parachuting down 4-7 spots, and take Heyward, Wilkerson, & Carimi.

I’m actually quite comfortable with any of the 4 targeted guys, I think all of them can be really good players. If I had a preference I would go with JJ Watt. So I’m hoping, Jake Locker and maybe another QB is taken before the chargers pick, and maybe a second OT, then the chargers would even have options.

by TJBOLT on Apr 26, 2011 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Add to those 4 players

another 4 potential picks at QB (from teams panicking after the 1st two are gone and proobably another 2 in corners and probably 1 off. linemen, 1 DT, and 1 (maybe 2) WR and that puts us at pick (4 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1) 16 (Jaguars). Followed by the Patriots and then US. (But remember I haven’t included any of the DTs and there is 1 that is going to be picked in top 3 for sure and maybe another one too so that could get us down to pick 15 (Jags) but nevertheless lets start at 13.

Lions may go DB with Jimmy Smith or a younger pass rushing DE
Rams need a WR and they need defense too especially a DT
Jaguars need a DE and probably another WR (but that’s a reach in the 1st)
The Patriots? Who knows, they are interested in a lot of positions that we are but have the most flexibility in the draft and could do anything.
Then SAN DIEGO. If the corner Jimmy Smith is still there then I say we jump and take him.

Again that’s if all of those DEs/OLBs are gone by pick 18.

by MacDeezul on Apr 26, 2011 4:06 PM PDT reply actions

Man I was just about perfect

In nailing this scenario and Jimmy Smith was right there! And we chose a DT to play DE…..

Jimmy Smith, Wilkerson, Phil Taylor in that order

Wilkerson is the run stopping beast we need at the DE position. Jimmy Smith is a top ten talent lock down CB, and Phil Taylor might allow Garay to take some snaps at the DE position. I really wouldnt mind Ayers though, he’s very versitile and could start inside if we needed him too. My favorite OT around 18 would be Carimi, that pick might make the most sense from a risk reward standpoint; but we need a defensive player

Doubt it, medical risk, bad scheme fit too

First off, every report on his medical seems bad, he might need micro fracture surgery, we just went through Merriman, not much interested in a fragile pass rusher.

He’s probably less agile than Kerrigan, he’s taller and heavier, meaning dropping into coverage is probably not a good idea. He’s basically just a 4-3 DE, so bad scheme fit means no also.

by TJBOLT on Apr 27, 2011 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Nope. Not for a 1st rounder

You see what happened to us after Lights Out was no longer Lights Out. A miss in the 1st round for a team like us, who is so close to being in the Super Bowl could find themselves on the cusp for another 2 years while we search for that play-maker that we need to get over the “hump”. IMHO a 1st rounder has to be an instant starter, a playmaker, a 17 game person.
