Sometimes, these are easy.
The Winner
Wes Chandler – WR
One could argue that Chandler may be worthy of winning the #89 Golden Jersey for the New Orleans Saints (although that would require me knowing anyone else who has worn #89 for the Saints). Chandler had two 1000-yard seasons for the Saints, and even went to one Pro Bowl before being traded to the Chargers four games into the ’81 season.
Chandler brought with him incredible athleticism, great hands, a keen understanding of the offensive system, and an uncanny ability at allowing Charger fans to forget about an ugly set of circumstances. In all, he amassed two 1000-yard seasons for the Bolts, and made three Pro Bowl appearances. Oh, and he occasionally threw in a big punt return.
Chandler was not a first-run Coryellian, but he artfully showed that properly athletic players could adapt and learn, and that as a system, Air Coryell could fly well beyond the limits of San Diego.
