Chargers allow five players to become free agents, Legedu Naanee among them
Rounding out our news of player moves on the Chargers, the team today announced they have not tendered contracts to five players, thus allowing them to become unrestricted free agents.
The biggest name on the list is Wide Receiver Legedu Naanee, who you may remember recently got into some legal trouble a couple weeks back. In his time with the Chargers, Naanee garnered his fair share of fans and showed signs of being a solid slot receiver. But his recent injury issues coupled with his off-the-field problems – the Indianapolis incident wasn't his first run-in with the fuzz – all but sealed the deal in this being his last season with the Chargers. Naanee's value to the Chargers was also lowered a bit by Patrick Crayton's immediate and positive impact after coming here from Dallas.
Also having played their last game as a Charger are linebacker Darry Beckwith, fullback Billy Latsko, long snapper Ryan Neill and safety Pat Watkins.

Couldn't have predicted that Naanee would be a free agent before CBD
Would have expected CBD to be released before Naanee was allowed to walk…that being said, there is nothing keeping CBD from re-signing with the Chargers, either…
CBD is still under contract
So he could still be (and likely will be) cut this year. Its just a matter of timing that Naanee got the ax (sort of) first.
Oops, should read
“there is nothing keeping Naanee from re-signing with the Chargers, either…”
Yeah I know CBD is still under contract, I’m surprised he hasn’t been released at this point…
I had high hopes for Beckwith too
but once we drafted Butler last year I think the writing was on the wall.
Draft Vincent Brown to replace legs

A week ago I might have agreed with you
But Vincent really wasn’t that impressive at the combine. Now that shouldn’t say everything, but he ran a lot slower than I thought he would (4.71) and Legedu ran a 4.41 back in his day at the combine.
Not saying that Brown isn’t a good option, but rookie WR’s are hardly “plug and play” in the NFL, and Legedu already knows Norv’s system, I’d like to see him back. I wouldn’t mind taking Brown, but I also wouldn’t say that Brown could replace Legs from day one, especially with a lockout looming rookies won’t have a lot of time to learn a new system.
He's never been that fast
He impressed scouts with his play in the Senior Bowl. He’s got great hands, runs great routes, and is great at getting separation.

Also they run a pro-style offense at SDSU which is similar to the one the Chargers run.
Well at least Al Borges did.

Don't get me wrong, I like Vincent Brown
just don’t think he can slide right in and replace Legs, that’s all. Then again he may not have to if Crayton can stay healthy.
Haha okay that is true
But how many Jerry Rice’s are there? And how many receivers couldn’t cut it in the NFL because they couldn’t get separation for lack of speed? The answer to the second question is a much much larger number than the first.
I didn’t watch him in dallas and i never heard of the guy before he came here so I thought he would suck.
Its all about 18

I love it
when folks decide to base their opinion of a guy on the Combine.
Watch some tape. The Combine is to look for inconsistencies in a player’s game performance (e.g. he performed much worse than expected, so you go back & look at tape) or to look at someone who impresses at the combine that you may have missed.
Beyond that, physical measurements, interviews, & physicals are really about it for the value of the Combine. Game tape tells the real tale.
If you base your opinion on Combine numbers, Al Davis has a job waiting for you. :-p

I'm guessing that's a dig at me since Im the only one in here referencing combine numbers
I would ask you to go visit my recent post on the OLBs and DEs coming out of college and note that I reference both their combine numbers AND their college production.
I agree with you that it is silly to judge a player solely on their combine numbers, but when you have a player that didn’t play in one of the premier conferences that you are trying to compare to the other WRs to see if he will be able to use his speed to gain separation at the NFL level and he runs slow at the combine, that answers a part of your question. The next part needs to be determined by watching tape, you are correct in that.
No dig intended
Just a general observation of many “draft-niks” as a whole.
Take it as you wish.

I hear ya on that
There is a lot of man crushing going on this time of year right after the combine for sure…
Absolutely
I’ve actually noticed a few more articles from professional sources this year addressing that fact.
Again – sorry if you took my original statement as a dig at you. That wasn’t my intent. I suppose I should dial down the smart-ass factor when it’s in a faceless format. :-)

I Really Liked Legedu
Naanee was one of the players that I personally cheered for on the team and I really wanted him to break on the scene this year. He had moments of productivity when given his promotion this year but he underachieved if we can look back at it rationally. The injuries certainly didn’t help either. Maybe we’ll see some more of Ajirotutu this year in addition to an expanded role for Crayton. I don’t think the receivers are what needs the most attention this offseason t hough.
Best of luck to you, Legedu!!
"You play to win the game."
The biggest name there is Legedu
The other guys were 3rd level replacements. I’m pretty sure the draft will bring in 2 safeties and 2 more linebackers.

I thought Naanee was a great change of pace receiver...
But it seems as though he never really hit his stride with the Chargers. I liked his energy and speed but I think he can be easily replaced. Not a key asset.
Just a little critique for the writer… the last sentence, " Patrick Crayton having a positive impact on the team also didn’t help his case." At first reading I was left with the impression that Patrick Crayton was released also… I actually had to read it a couple of times. I’m not an english major but I think it may be a sentence fragment… When you say “his case” in that sentence I think it refers to Patrick Crayton’s case not Legedu’s case… thus the confusion. In addition, you don’t need about half the comma’s you used in the story. For example in the sentence, “In his time with the Chargers, Naanee garnered his fair share of fans, and showed signs of being a solid slot receiver.” you don’t really need any commas… it just makes the sentence very choppy. I’m not trying to be a jerk so I hope it’s not taken that way… it’s the off season so we can all work on our game.

No offense or jerk-status taken
This was admittedly not my best work as I was rushing trying to get it posted.
I do tend to use commas a lot as I like to pause and group sentence fragments and subjects together. Oftentimes I use too many. And I’m usually a stickler for explicit statements and do my best to remove any ambiguity, so I’m in complete agreement with what you said about the Crayton statement.
I went through and revised the story a bit, rewriting the sentence about Crayton and removing unnecessary commas. Hope it’s a clearer and flows a bit better than before.

That's a big relief...
I’m not one of those people who go around correcting peoples grammar or spelling… I just really thought you might want to know your post was a little confusing and maybe not saying what you wanted it to say. It takes a lot of guts to put your thoughts out there in a blog post and I appreciate you taking my comment as it was meant. The ending is much more clear re: Clayton. In my English 101 class we would automatically fail a paper if we used an unnecessary comma so I got in the habit of using as few as possible. I use an on-line grammar/spell checker before I send out emails or letters… not fool proof but keeps me from making glaring errors.
I'm one of the biggest spelling/grammar nazis around here
When it comes to comma use, I write exactly as I speak or think things in my head. If I would naturally pause somewhere, a comma goes there. And it’s funny because you and I come from two opposing mindsets; I feel like people don’t use commas enough and create sentences that seem to be run-ons because there is no pause whatsoever.

I actually usually vulture jersey's for $10 from the official store after guys get cut...
I’m a cheapass like that.
Too bad
Legedu had alot of potential. I was expecting big things from him last year but injuries kept him down. Not suprised to see him go though given the other options at WR. I wonder too if the fact his name showed up in the news twice for drunken behavior had any bearing on the final decision.
