2011 Season
Continuity..
Alright people now that I've push some buttons, let me start by saying thank you to all of you veteran posters who have been here for awhile. I apologize for the harsh critizism's and bad grammar . Hope you can accept me as an avid fan who is absoloutley passionate about our Chargers. So let's move on....
Continuity has been the key word that A.J. has preached since he has been here. Not many NFL teams have had that. I agree to his model of hiring coaches who has had some measure of success in the same system that has been employed offensively by Norv Turner and defensively by Ron Rivera. We have alot of key free agents this year who probably will not be here for long. Just the same, some of them are not worth keeping anyway. I may be wrong, but I think Luis Castillo is one of those who have already lost a step. We need a quicker defensive end who can not only rush the quarterback, but also plug up some running holes. I also think we may have overpaid for Sproles last year. We tagged him as our franchise player but I just didn't see him living up to it.
What do you guys think of Nnamdi Asomugha playing on the other side of Jammer? I'm just not completly sold on Cason yet. Drafting or signing some free agents who can help us with the pass rush and stopping the run should help our corners. I know it all sounds cliche but defense wins games. Hopefully we can get some players who can help us maintain that continuity on being number one on defense. A.J.'s preaching sounds good for now.

Castillo
Definately has not put up the stats he did in the year he got his big contract. And he probably hasn’t lived up to his pay either. However, he has already earned most of the big money in the contract and won’t get cut or traded because he is now a “bargain” based on what he will actually get paid this year ($4.5 M or so). I’m on record as saying that I don’t think the 3-4 lends itself to impact players at the DE position anyways. There are only one or two Seymore level players out there and they are probably not worth what you would have to pay them.
I do like what GB seems to be doing on the inside which is really to put 3 NT sized guys in there most of the time. Let them clog up the run lanes and collapse the occassional pocket. Then bring pressure from everywhere else. Of course, it helps if you have PoY candidates at OLB who can get around the edge regularly. I think we’ve got a semblence of that with Garay, Thomas, and Martin on the inside, but we don’t have the OLB who can pressure at will. I think that is our biggest need and what I would like to see us draft.
(by the way, your posts are improving in their formatting! Now we just need to keep you focused on a single point before tearing off to another one in the same paragraph!)

they had castillo covered pretty good the a lot of the season, somewhat planning for him- double teams and such… but with that in mind, i think he did pretty well. he’s an anchor on the d-line, and that left Garay get all up in the o-line’s face… if only some more fumbles were created.
we should make a druid altar for the drafting of Vonn.

Hey Surge,
Thank you for the apology, I appreciate it.
Your passion for the Chargers is readily apparent, and if what you say about being around to watch the Gillman and Coryell teams is true, then you are someone I would really like to have around here so that I could talk to you about the rich history of the team I love.
Do know though, that this is a community here, and we may seem close minded on some topics, but that is only because we have likely discussed nearly every issue pertaining to the Chargers already, and at great length. And generally whenever any topic is discussed a consensus is naturally formed.
We are not dismissive of dissent, but we don’t want to have to rehash old arguments either.
The best thing to do before opening a new post is to use the search function and see if there has already been a discussion about any topic you feel is important. And after doing so if you feel that you have something new to bring to the discussion, please restart the conversation with a FanPost.
Also, instead of writing a FanPost ever time you have something to say, start using the reply link that can be found at every comment. It helps to keep conversations well organized, and clear.

Asomugha
Has anyone heard anything about the potential price tag for Asomugha?
My assumption is that his price will make him impossible to fit into the Chargers’ cap, but I haven’t heard that for certain.
Though, I did feel that Cason was really coming on at the end of this season.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn’t this his first year as a starter out wide by himself. I thought he worked out of the Nickel mainly the past two seasons.
yeah… he was in nickle, and that didn’t really work for him. if we had asomugha, we’d probly have the oldest CB tandem in the league.

But… Jammer has gone on record, that he would go to Safety.

Yeah, I remember reading that.
And I love the team first attitude from him, but is he capable of holding CB down for at least one more season, or is there an urgent need to move him?
I see the Chargers needs at other positions being greater now, so much so that I don’t think this is the year to consider a positional change for one of their more stable players.
i would get strangely excited for Osamu-i can't spell his name so i won't even try
but he is an unreal corner.

ehh i hate draft retrospectives
the Padres could have had Justin Verlander… but I guess Matt Bush is ok too.

And I've always liked asking, "what if?"
I like imagining different scenarios and outcomes. Helps me be unproductive at work.
But I tend to be even tempered and not get too worked up about the team’s shortcomings, so it works for me.
isn't that a legal requirement for san diego sports fans?

Well that's what the national sports media reports about us.
But the callers to San Diego sports radio stations seem to paint a different picture.
The Chargers could have had Philip Rivers
but they drafted Eli Manning instead.
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.

Welcome aboard, man.
Not with you on Castillo (he’s good, not great, doesn’t play at a super-important position) or with Asomugha (sold on Cason, Jammer has gas in tank). I think a first or second round pick on a CB this year or next is probably in the offing, but that’s all.

Good to be aboard
I still think Castillo is not worth the money. Heck even Cesaire put up almost the same numbers for less the pay. Now that Cesaire is gone, I think DE in the first round is a good bet.
You guys think English will come around this year? One thing for sure..he can tackle !
at this point, all we know about English is that we don’t know. First year was lost in the transition from a Small College DE to NFL OLB, which is understandable. Second year was a wash because of a broken foot that required surgery mid-season, understandable, but frustrating. We’ve seen flashes which is encouraging, but far too few finishes, which is concerning.
I don’t think AJ spends a #1 on a DE, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him spend a #1 on a OLB, which I think will speak volumes about AJ’s confidence in English.

OLB in the 1st
i think it’s the only play we have, unless there’s an absolute monster DE that we would be fools to pass on. I like our line though, they have great chemistry. but a 2nd round DE would be good.
Confidence in English or not, it’s at linebacker we need help on. And if we are to be a dominant 3-4, we need some easy first round talent… no projects.

Agree with you that Castillo hasn't produced quite at the level he's being paid for,
but he does offer a lot in the way of stable and reliable, if underwhelming, production that a lot of guys that can play 3-4 DE don’t, including Cesaire. That is a commodity that shouldn’t be undervalued.
Can anyone think of any under-the-radar type DEs that can provide the same type of working man’s production that Castillo does for less?
And how does Castillo’s contract impact the Chargers’ spending power/cap room currently? Should they maybe be looking to unload him after this next season?
And, man, I have no idea what to expect of English. I really want him to develop into the elite pass rusher the the Chargers need.
I guess I am going to use this season’s draft to get a gauge of how the organization views his potential at this point, and trust that they know what they are doing.
