87 is a weird one. For all the players who have worn the number – mostly Wide Receivers -- and for all the offensive firepower the Chargers have displayed in their 50 years of existence, you’d THINK there’d be SOMEONE who stands out. Eh… Just be glad I didn’t put it to a vote!
Runner Up
Duane Young, TE
I put Young here for a couple of reasons. 1) He had the longest tenure of any other 87. A whopping 5 seasons. (And he only played one more season for one other team. The Committee loves it some exclusivity.) 2) He played on the Super Bowl team. In fact, he was the starting Tight End on the Super Bowl! In fact, he caught a pass in the Super Bowl game! But Young never caught more than 17 passes in a season, and never amassed more than 220 yards before shuffling off to Buffalo.
The Winner
Quinn Early, WR
Early had a decent career, including back to back years of 80+ catches and a 1,000 yard season. But all of that was with New Orleans! San Diego was just an appetizer. So yes, this is more a recognition of an overall career than it is for his contributions to the Chargers – something the Committee has frowned upon since its inception. But times are tough and pickins’ are slim. So... Early to rise…
