Congratulations Drew Brees

Well, tonight, our old friend Breezy broke Dan Marino's single-season passing record, with not a little help from our other old friend Darren Sproles. It's a bit of a bitter pill to watch these two kicking so much ass with the Saints and wonder where we'd be if we kept them (Drew, slightly less so, because pre-meltdown Philip Rivers has been a nice replacement) while our season has completely and utterly collapsed.

But, despite his untimely departure, we still love him. And so, Drew Brees, from all of your friends and fans back here in San Diego who watched as you were drafted, struggled, were benched in favor of Doug Flutie, reemerged with a Pro Bowl showing, set team records, and took us to the playoffs in 2004: congratulations, big guy. We salute you, and I'm sure that many of us will be rooting for the Saints in lieu of the Chargers to grab this year's Lombardi trophy.

Congratulations Drew...

the odd thing, Sproles will be forever tied to this moment, by catching the pass that broke the record. even more odd, to former Chargers did it.

He thanked everyone...

He thanked the Coaches, the WRs, the Offensive Line, the RBs, the DEFENSE and everyone in the organization and said this record was as much theirs as it was his – Class!

But he forgot to thank AJ! – Class.

Why exactly?
But, despite his untimely departure, we still love him.

The guy that lead this team into the playoffs for the first time since 1995

Even while he knew that the rectal orifice of a GM had drafted a QB to replace him and then jacked with the negotiations so badly that the heir apparent did not even get into camp until the last week of August. Dude actually showed some character and guts. No wonder they wanted to replace him.

We have the benefit of hindsight to see how AJ was determined to put his own stamp on the team and Brees was one of his mentor’s (Butler) hires that had to go. Can’t have a QB that is only 6’0", after all. The power struggle between Marty and AJ got to its most dysfunctional where Brees v. Rivers was concerned. Now the Saints have a 6 foot tall QB that has a ring and his name in the record books. The Bolts still have squat.

North Texas REALLY needs a Rubio's franchise.

Yoooooour right

That’s been our problem all along! Replacing any player that shows character and guts! Thank you for your insight.

Rec'd for cutting right to the absurdity.

What's so absurd?

AJ made a business decision and showed how incompetent he is. The GM and HC in New Orleans showed what they can do with talent. The Saints GM and HC put a Ring on Drew Brees finger. Made him an MVP, Pro-Bowler. And now Record holder.
What has AJ and Norv done for El Capitain?…….

You've shockingly missed the point yet again.

I don't see what is absurd either

That Brees continued to play hard and effectively after his replacement had been drafted; I don’t remember Brees making public comments bitching about it. That is how I interpret the “guts” comment. OK, I doubt they got rid of him for it, but he does seem like a stand up guy.

AJ thought PR had better potential than Brees, or why else would he draft him? One can argue whether that was a intelligent decision or not given the facts available at the time, but, thus far, Brees and NO coaching has outperformed PR and SD coaching.

I think PR has undeveloped potential, so remain hopeful. However, if he cannot run passing offenses as effectively as Rodgers, P. Manning, Brady or Brees, that will be a disappointment because I believe if he could, we should.

Be sure to let me know the next time a non-Bolt player

kicks a challenge flag in a PLAYOFF GAME and the discussion is NOT “trade him or cut him?”, but instead is “how much of a raise is this guy really worth?” I mean, since we are discussing absurdity and all…

They would have had V-Jax’s butt out of Pittsburgh or New England so fast, the skid marks would still be on the locker room. Here? “Ohh we can’t get rid of a player with so much TALENT.” But hey, what do those teams know about putting championship teams together?

North Texas REALLY needs a Rubio's franchise.

It kind of sucks that this could have been your offense with good coaching

But from all the Saints fans thanks
And if you have any outstanding OLB’s you feel the need to get rid of give us a call

Can John relink the history of the end of the Brees era again?

I am tired of seeing so much revisionist history where people are starting at a conclusion and then creating a story line. This entire post is absurd.

Also, how many people thought
1: Sproles was overrated
2: Sproles was overpaid
3: Sproles was no longer very effective in the return game

I mean seriously good for him, you can make the argument that NO is utilizing him more effectively…but most of us were not tripping when he left based on the above.
