Open Thread: San Diego Chargers at Detroit Lions, 2nd Half

The Chargers are just getting taken apart in this game. The defense can't stop Detroit at all. Manusky seems to be calling zone cover schemes on every play and the Lions continue to find the holes. The holes continue to appear to be wherever Steve Gregory should have been.

The offense doesn't look any better than the defense as they've been held under 100 yards so far in this game. Philip Rivers & co. have managed not to turn the ball over, but that's all they've managed. Honestly, this is just embarrassing to watch.

In a game they absolutely, positively had to win to have any chance of making the playoffs, the San Diego Chargers have not shown up at all in any phase of the game. It's almost hard to believe this is the same team that bullied the Baltimore Ravens last week.

Discuss the second half of this abortion of a game with us here and please do try to keep it clean or you'll be looking for a new place to discuss games next week.

So...what're the fixes to this team?

New defensive coordinator? As far as I’m concerned, this defense has been far worse than the offense, regardless of the lack of points being put up.

I like how Hester has to tell Goodman not to run that out.

Watch the kickoffs

Every time Goodman downs it, it’s because Hester tells him not to run it out.

whats to discus next week?

Its almost as if the team took a collective vote to throw the game to ensure Norv and Mansucky get canned. Very clever, play above your level for 3 weeks and generate all that buzz and hope, then pull the plug when it matters most.

This is classic Norv Turner

I mean he had to sign off on the gameplan when Manusky came to him and said “lets just play zone against one of the best receivers in football”, right?

The young guys on the D-Line are coming along very well

Martin and Thomas have both made good strides this season and Garay has been disruptive when healthy. Liuget still needs some work but he’s definitely the going to fit well into the rotation.

Defense

Hey a punt friggin miracle. Defense needs to be overhauled.

Anybody other than Satan's team

So I guess the donkeys are the only ones left that can do that.

North Texas REALLY needs a Rubio's franchise.

Norv is stubborn and still hasn't figured out Mathews is a better option

Good thing we traded up to get Mathews! We really needed a good RB that is ignored by his HC.

by SDBear on Dec 24, 2011 3:46 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

It's like he knows he's a good RB when the game is in the bag and he plays him

but he forgets he’s the better RB when the offense is struggling and would rather have Tolbert dropping passes

by jkvandal on Dec 24, 2011 3:48 PM PST up reply actions

Nice couple of extra yards by Tolbert.

good to see

the Chargers establishing a running game

Hard to do when you're down multiple scores.

well

the HC is a brilliant offensive play caller

by Hormel on Dec 24, 2011 3:48 PM PST up reply actions

That's largely unrelated to the defense giving up so many points so fast.

but 10 pts won’t win any games

this is a serious question.

does it makes any difence to fire norv today or after next week?

by cleyton on Dec 24, 2011 3:47 PM PST reply actions

It would be nice to win next week

And that’s hard to do with a new coach.

by aesimpleton on Dec 24, 2011 3:48 PM PST up reply actions

Probably just a confidence level difference in the locker room

knowing they couldn’t play well enough to save their head coach

by Falawful on Dec 24, 2011 3:48 PM PST up reply actions

I would only be in favor of it if one of the assisstants took over.

Let Bisaccia or even Wilks have it for a week, see how they do. Move Pagano up to DC.

by aesimpleton on Dec 24, 2011 3:51 PM PST up reply actions

As stated before

once a guy becomes the interim head coach, he typically either gets the promotion to full time head coach or gets moved out. Hard for a guy to be a head coach then take a demotion back to his original position.

Not sure one game is a good enough period of time to see if Wilks or Bisaccia have what it takes, and the Chargers don’t want to lose them.

by jkvandal on Dec 24, 2011 3:56 PM PST up reply actions

That's a good point.

I’m just not impressed with many outside options, or the current regime.

by aesimpleton on Dec 24, 2011 4:00 PM PST up reply actions

I would keep him just to see how the team plays

With no playoff aspirations. If they play with no heart it just makes the decision to fire him that much more easier and justifiable.

Believe it or not, I think Norv still has some support among Charger fans.

I would love

not to have to see his face on my TV….ever again

has been a team effort

On the other hand, you have different fingers.

by Hormel on Dec 24, 2011 3:53 PM PST up reply actions

This wasn't specifically related to that catch

but he could have at least turned into a cornerback and disrupted the int. That’s still making a play. But my statement is more a year-long analysis of Jackson’s play.

by Falawful on Dec 24, 2011 4:01 PM PST up reply actions

Hes been playing hurt a lot this year.

Still a solid #1 receiver and it’s not like we have another option. Pay the man.

by classicmfk on Dec 24, 2011 4:04 PM PST via iPhone app up reply actions

uncatchable based off where Jackson ran...

I’ve seen Jackson undercut the CB there to jump up between the CB and Safety several times to come down with the ball…he just looked back for the ball too late to adjust his route

by jkvandal on Dec 24, 2011 3:52 PM PST up reply actions

Underthrown

by aesimpleton on Dec 24, 2011 3:51 PM PST up reply actions

Jackson and Floyd both come down with those the majority of the time when they try

regardless of if they are underthrown or not…would I blame another receiver for that? No. Would I blame Jackson? yes. Elite receivers come down with those passes, and he wants to be paid as an elite receiver.

by jkvandal on Dec 24, 2011 3:53 PM PST up reply actions

My vote is to blow this b---h up and start with a whole new front office and coaching staff

And make it clear to the players that EVERY SINGLE roster spot is up for grabs.

North Texas REALLY needs a Rubio's franchise.

There needs to be changes this off-season is the bottom-line.

This is still a playoff-possible team, but there needs to be changes for it to become a playoff-guaranteed team and then hopefully a Superbowl-bound team

We need toughness.

The defense is made of glass. Our linebackers are like the first guy you had to fight in Mike Tyson’s Punch Out

by bdwolin on Dec 24, 2011 3:57 PM PST reply actions

This isn't exactly true

I think our D-line and linebackers are both pretty good against the run, it’s just the lack of pass pressure, which could be due to the lockout effecting Manusky’s play-calling efficiency. We’ll see.

by Falawful on Dec 24, 2011 3:59 PM PST up reply actions

At times, Manusky's looked okay...

I’m hesitant on calling Manusky to be booted, I would like some coaching continuity from this year IF Norv is indeed displaced, just for player support. But if he is removed, I’ll just wait to see who the replacement is to judge if it’s the right decision or not.

by Falawful on Dec 24, 2011 4:04 PM PST up reply actions

I like most of the assisstants. Just not the HC or DC.

someone hasn't been watching Butler this season

that statement is simply not true. The pass rush has lacked, and at times every level of the defense has been a weakness, but the majority of the time (especially today) there has just been questionable defensive playcalling

by jkvandal on Dec 24, 2011 3:59 PM PST up reply actions

The LBs have played above my expectations all year

Butler in particular.

We need a complete OLB opposite Shaun Phillips

English had flashes of it before he got injured, but I think that’ll have a bigger impact than most give it credit for.

Agreed.

But for the talent level, they’ve played well.
