Open Thread: San Diego Chargers at Detroit Lions, 2nd Half
The Chargers are just getting taken apart in this game. The defense can't stop Detroit at all. Manusky seems to be calling zone cover schemes on every play and the Lions continue to find the holes. The holes continue to appear to be wherever Steve Gregory should have been.
The offense doesn't look any better than the defense as they've been held under 100 yards so far in this game. Philip Rivers & co. have managed not to turn the ball over, but that's all they've managed. Honestly, this is just embarrassing to watch.
In a game they absolutely, positively had to win to have any chance of making the playoffs, the San Diego Chargers have not shown up at all in any phase of the game. It's almost hard to believe this is the same team that bullied the Baltimore Ravens last week.
Discuss the second half of this abortion of a game with us here and please do try to keep it clean or you'll be looking for a new place to discuss games next week.

It's pretty embarrassing.
305 yards in the first half. Wow.
that's what you predicted earlier
when you said hopefully it doesn’t turn out to be a game like the one against the Bengals last year…guess it’s worse
My bad

Yeah it has played out like a worse version of that game
If we lose the result will be the same.

So...what're the fixes to this team?
New defensive coordinator? As far as I’m concerned, this defense has been far worse than the offense, regardless of the lack of points being put up.
I like how Hester has to tell Goodman not to run that out.
From 9 yards deep.

Watch the kickoffs
Every time Goodman downs it, it’s because Hester tells him not to run it out.

I know. It's amazing he can't figure it out himself.
"Were such things here as we do speak about?
Or have we eaten on the insane root

it makes me wonder
why he keeps doing it anyways
whats to discus next week?
Its almost as if the team took a collective vote to throw the game to ensure Norv and Mansucky get canned. Very clever, play above your level for 3 weeks and generate all that buzz and hope, then pull the plug when it matters most.
This is classic Norv Turner
I mean he had to sign off on the gameplan when Manusky came to him and said “lets just play zone against one of the best receivers in football”, right?
What color horse Norv will ride out on

Bisaccia, I do like.
"Were such things here as we do speak about?

He really has turned it up...
unfortunately the rest of the defense (with the exception of Butler) has regressed
I'll be honest
I knew he was going to improve this season and make more plays, but I never could have predicted that he would be leading the league in INT’s at any point
it took 15 games
for Norv to bust out the trick plays
On the other hand, you have different fingers.
Hell of a job by the offense there.

"Were such things here as we do speak about?

Floyd is more useful to this offense than Jackson
He’s much more useful to the offense, opens up plays better, better hands…my opinion
as long as floyd doesn't head to the sideline after the catch
im happy with his production
except there is still a defender in the frame when one of our receivers catches the ball
one some our our zone D I haven’t seen a single defender on the screen when a WR on detroit catches it
Exactly.
Any zone can be exploited. You have to prevent YAC and dictate what the offense does with the ball.

Yep and it has been driving me crazy
Plus it is one reason why he has thrown so many picks this year, as those balls tend to float.
by SDBear on Dec 24, 2011 3:13 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Yup
some of those are because he is under pressure from the opposing defense, but sometimes he just thinks he doesn’t have to plant his feet when he has time and space to do so
I agree about the Pressure being the main reason
As you pointed out, sometimes he does it even when he has time which really bothers me because it is so lazy of him and a bad habit for a QB to have.

Game Plan
It is very clear to me the problem with this team is coaching. Play callin is horrible on both sides of the ball. The D Line is horrible I dont care what anyone says. How do go fro lights out last week to looking totally un prepared this week? That is coaching plain and simple……………………….Tine for a change………………..
The young guys on the D-Line are coming along very well
Martin and Thomas have both made good strides this season and Garay has been disruptive when healthy. Liuget still needs some work but he’s definitely the going to fit well into the rotation.
The D-Line needs two things: Castillo to come back and another solid pass rusher at OLB.
Floyd with another catch.

Hard to do when you're down multiple scores.
"Were such things here as we do speak about?

That's largely unrelated to the defense giving up so many points so fast.
"Were such things here as we do speak about?
Or have we eaten on the insane root
That takes the reason prisoner?"
this is a serious question.
does it makes any difence to fire norv today or after next week?
It would be nice to win next week
And that’s hard to do with a new coach.
"Were such things here as we do speak about?
Or have we eaten on the insane root
That takes the reason prisoner?"
Probably just a confidence level difference in the locker room
knowing they couldn’t play well enough to save their head coach
no difference unless they were considering one of their own coaches to take over and be an interim head coach
but one game isn’t a good measure of that…so no
I would only be in favor of it if one of the assisstants took over.
Let Bisaccia or even Wilks have it for a week, see how they do. Move Pagano up to DC.
"Were such things here as we do speak about?
Or have we eaten on the insane root
That takes the reason prisoner?"
As stated before
once a guy becomes the interim head coach, he typically either gets the promotion to full time head coach or gets moved out. Hard for a guy to be a head coach then take a demotion back to his original position.
Not sure one game is a good enough period of time to see if Wilks or Bisaccia have what it takes, and the Chargers don’t want to lose them.
That's a good point.
I’m just not impressed with many outside options, or the current regime.
"Were such things here as we do speak about?
Or have we eaten on the insane root
That takes the reason prisoner?"
I would keep him just to see how the team plays
With no playoff aspirations. If they play with no heart it just makes the decision to fire him that much more easier and justifiable.
Believe it or not, I think Norv still has some support among Charger fans.

It's hard to make a play with two defenders in front of you and an underthrown ball.
No slogans. Just win!!!
This wasn't specifically related to that catch
but he could have at least turned into a cornerback and disrupted the int. That’s still making a play. But my statement is more a year-long analysis of Jackson’s play.
Hes been playing hurt a lot this year.
Still a solid #1 receiver and it’s not like we have another option. Pay the man.
by classicmfk on Dec 24, 2011 4:04 PM PST via iPhone app up reply actions
uncatchable based off where Jackson ran...
I’ve seen Jackson undercut the CB there to jump up between the CB and Safety several times to come down with the ball…he just looked back for the ball too late to adjust his route
Underthrown
"Were such things here as we do speak about?
Or have we eaten on the insane root
That takes the reason prisoner?"
Jackson and Floyd both come down with those the majority of the time when they try
regardless of if they are underthrown or not…would I blame another receiver for that? No. Would I blame Jackson? yes. Elite receivers come down with those passes, and he wants to be paid as an elite receiver.
My vote is to blow this b---h up and start with a whole new front office and coaching staff

Time to get the prime rib out of the oven…
North Texas REALLY needs a Rubio's franchise.
We need toughness.
The defense is made of glass. Our linebackers are like the first guy you had to fight in Mike Tyson’s Punch Out
This isn't exactly true
I think our D-line and linebackers are both pretty good against the run, it’s just the lack of pass pressure, which could be due to the lockout effecting Manusky’s play-calling efficiency. We’ll see.
At times, Manusky's looked okay...
I’m hesitant on calling Manusky to be booted, I would like some coaching continuity from this year IF Norv is indeed displaced, just for player support. But if he is removed, I’ll just wait to see who the replacement is to judge if it’s the right decision or not.
I highly doubt a new coach retains Manusky

"Were such things here as we do speak about?

someone hasn't been watching Butler this season
that statement is simply not true. The pass rush has lacked, and at times every level of the defense has been a weakness, but the majority of the time (especially today) there has just been questionable defensive playcalling
The LBs have played above my expectations all year
Butler in particular.
"Were such things here as we do speak about?
Or have we eaten on the insane root

We need a complete OLB opposite Shaun Phillips
