In case anyone is wondering, 'First Down and a Billion' is the title of a book written by the second owner of the San Diego Chargers, Gene Klien. For any serious fan of not only the Chargers, but football in general, this should be required reading as it gives a humorous and insightful look into the Bolts post AFL/NFL merger. Some of the characters that played on the early Chargers teams you may recognize (like Johnny Unitas and Dan Fouts), some you may not, but they were a diverse and somewhat nutty bunch that helped make the NFL the powerhouse that it is today. Klien himself was quite a character and his battles with a certain Chargers former assistant coach named Al Davis are legend. There are lots of interesting stories and trivia about the team so if you get a chance, find a copy and have a chuckle. You may even find out why the team is named The Chargers.
