Top 5 Defensive Plays vs the Bills
With the Chargers defense giving up only three points to the Buffalo Bills this week, there were certainly a lot of defensive highlights to pick from.
Top Defensive Play #5 features the Chargers sack leader Antwan Barnes doing his thing against old man Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those darn kids.
Top Defensive Play #4 has everything you would ever want in a defense clip. It was a last ditch fourth down try, there was a sufficient pass rush, excellent downfield coverage, and quality containment on a scrambling QB. This play wasn't exactly a nervous moment for San Diego, but it pretty much sealed the win.
Top Defensive Play #3 features Antoine Cason barely saving face by making a great recovery with a receiver way behind him on a deep ball. In a closer game, the uncalled pass interference would have been a hot debate topic. In real time, this looked like perfect timing. In slow motion he was definitely there a hair early, but enough to warrant a PI call.
Top Defensive Play #2 is the first of two safety interceptions. Last week, Eric Weddle got an assist from Cason; this week he got a little help from the backside of Na'il Diggs.
Top Defensive Play #1 is of course, the Steve Gregory Pick Six due to pressure from Shaun Phillips. It's been a looooong time since San Diego has returned an interception for a touchdown, and this one was refreshing.

Still think pass rush is needed. ...
this secondary covers for huge chunks of time game after game. 5 seconds doesn’t seem like much, but it’s the difference between 1 yard of separation and 3 on a pass you have to defend.

I can't imagine anyone disagrees with you on that.
The pass rush has been practically nonexistent this year.

Too bad it wasn't sustainable.

Applewhite was terrible.
decent against the run, terrible rushing the QB. Burnett is definitely missed

In this game, the pass rush was sufficient
but like I’ve been saying, that’s probably because of the lack of a true rushing attack. Yes, they only got one sack, but at least the first two picks and what could have been a third with Cason were due to a defender getting in the face of Fitz forcing a pass. It’s also of course because of Rivers putting up points.
I'd say half of all picks thrown in the NFL are due to pressure.

#2
That block Phillips laid on #85 was awesome. Especially because they had some words two plays before, and then Phillips destroyed him on the INT return

Question on #3
Since I wasn’t able to watch the game…was that not called PI? I see a flag flying through frame. Did they pick it up?

They had a little conference then picked it up

Hey thanks
Very close to PI on that. Tough call.

No problem. It's just like orz said though
In slow motion you can tell but in real time it looks instantaneous and luckily the refs don’t see the game in slow motion.

About Barnes
“This is the Worst Dance Ever”
I’m almost sure that there is a gif of Rivers saying it after the sack dance
Holy cow
Cason go a Personal Foul for that “block” at the end of #5? He barely nudged him with his hand, and he didn’t come close to striking him in the head as the ref claimed. Just terrible.
