Question about Eric Weddle...

Hi guys!

I am a big Utes fan and I wanted to ask you guys waht you thought of Eric Weddle.  I am just doing a story on former UTes for my blog, and I thought I'd ask Charger fans what you think of Mr. Weddle.

Has he lived up to your expectations (and that hefty contract)?  How do you think he fits in on the team?  Does he do a lot in the community?  What are your overall thoughts on him?

Thanks for your help!

Because of Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed

Weddle doesn’t make the Pro Bowl, but should.
The guy is the best player on the defense. Plays great against the run, better against the pass. Rarely makes mistakes, and is rarely tested. His only flaws are the occasional dropped pick, and being 2 inches shorter than an ideal Free Safety. Wish he had an identical twin to play Strong Safety.

Dielman on Rivers: "I've tried to get him to say s--- or f--- and all he'll ever do is say, 'Golly gee, I can't do that."

He's better than average

but over paid whether he is the best player on defense is argumentative because he doesn’t make enough game changing plays to justify that title. He is almost always near the ball, very sound tackler, pretty good fundamentals, just not a game changer.

He leads the league in picks...

Hes been a much better play maker this year, now that hes catching most interception opportunities.

by cameronm on Nov 3, 2011 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Not a game changer?

He sealed the first game against KC, another team, I think it was MIA, and had two picks to all but secure the victory for the Chargers in game 2 against KC if it wasn’t for “the incident” and the OT 3 and out.

basically

has had a major impact on almost every game it seems in crunch time. Not sure what this guy is smoking but eric weddle has been clutch

really?

Name the top 5 Safeties in the league, then name the next 5, then name the next 5….. that is where I think you find weddle – somewhere between 10 – 15. He is a good player but historically he HAS NOT been a game changer. He has made a couple good plays over the last couple of games but remember…. these are not against top echelon teams these are against teams with losing records…. miami?! Really? you are gonna count plays he made against the 2nd string quarterback on the worst team in the league?!

better yet here are a couple list

1. T. Polamalu – Steelers, 2 – Ed Reed Ravens, 3, Adrian Wilson Cardinals, Kerry Rhodes, Nick Collins, Quintin Mikell

another

Troy Polamulu, Ed Reed, Darren Sharper, Brian Dawkins, Nick Collins, Antoin Bethea, Roman Harper, Antrel Rolle, Brandon Meriweather, Adrian Wilson

another

Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed, Nick Collins, Adrian Wilson, Eric Berry, Michael Griffin, Donte Whitner, Brandon Meriweather, Antrel Rolle, LaRon Landry, Antoine Bethea

another

Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed, Darren Sharper, Brian Dawkins, Nick Colins, Antoine Bethea, Roman Harper, Antrel Rolle, Brandon Meriweather, Adrian Wilson

soooooo……

you are out of your mind

Weddle is severely underrated. top 5. yes top 5 safety. Sure tackler, play maker, great leader and great person off the field and he has what Troy and Reed dont, the ability to stay healthy.
Couldnt be happier to have weddle.

by cameronm on Nov 3, 2011 7:58 PM PDT up reply actions

and the fact that you mentioned Dawkins

Shows you dont know what you are talking about, in the day Dawkins was great, but he is a below average safety these days.

by cameronm on Nov 3, 2011 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions

the fact that I mention brian dawkins

should help point out that in a one-to-one comparison that b-dawk and eric weddle are not that far apart and b-dawk has been in the league for what seems like 30 years.

lol

no I am not questioning the character of eric weddle. take away the part of you being a charger fan and look at ALL the safeties around the league. there is no way you can objectively and honestly say without a doubt that this dude is top 5. He may be top 10 but if he is then he is at the bottom of that list.

by MacDeezul on Nov 4, 2011 5:36 AM PDT up reply actions

also realize that these are not my lists

these are list by other people/organizations/anaylsts/etc… the fact that eric weddle’s name doesn’t show up on any of these should mean something; regardless of how much a charger fan you are or not. underated? maybe, but not severely.

Then whoever made those lists

are idiots.

You lost me at Brandon Meriweather.

Did Weddle back over your dog or something?

no he didn't

and I love the guy I really do but he just aint top 5 in the league as far as safeties go. same way jammer is not top 5 in the league as far as corners go. it doesn’t mean he can’t be and maybe the reason he isn’t is because he doesn’t have the other parts around him to be overly effective at his position because he has to help so many others on the defense and cover up their mistakes or inabilities, but it is what it is. you take eric weddle off this team and insert any of the aforementioned players and I don’t think you miss a beat.

by MacDeezul on Nov 4, 2011 5:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Put Weddle man to man on a receiver and he'll do twice as well as Polamalu,

who routinely gets burned in coverage. Troy also throws himself at players trying to tackle and misses. Weddle wraps people up. Watch some football games and you’ll see.

Roman Harper? Kerry Rhodes?

Better than Weddle? sorry not with you on that one.

by Harsh_619 on Nov 4, 2011 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

not a bright one here

Adrian Wilson can’t cover – period
Kerry Rhodes got cut as did Merriweather
Sharper- Dawkins & Reed are too old to be considered
AJ had his shot at Polo – didn’t want him , might be his biggest blunder , and that’s saying something
The only young guys I’d rate over Weddle are Berry and Thomas even though I like Mikell , now get back to that pipe .
