j-man breaks down SD-DEN

Well, hello there.

I can go two ways with the Denver Broncos, positive or negative:

Positive  -  Our 2011 Draft Class looks very good, Von Miller is getting better every week while Moore, Franklin and Thomas start. Eric Decker is becoming a solid player and the Broncos have a deep WR corps. The defense is capable of slowing the run down at times, and the team never quits.

Negative - Kyle Orton is not clutch. We cannot play the "Ground and Pound" game that John Fox wants to. The middle of our Offensive Line gets pushed off the ball regularly. We give up a lot of big plays, make too many mental mistakes and our defense cannot create turnovers. Injuries have killed the Denver depth and the coaching staff lacks imagination. Even being negative, the Broncos are two plays away from being 3-1 instead of 1-3.

As I've said before, the San Diego Chargers tend to play down to the level of their opponent. Last week, despite the score, Denver game the Green Bay Packers a good game. Without mistakes by Orton and Daniel Fells fumbling away a TD, the Broncos would've scored 37 points.

Shoot me any Broncos questions you have in the comments below and I'll do my best to answer them.

What are the two plays

That kept them from being 3 – 1 instead of 1 – 3?

by BFDC on Oct 4, 2011 1:39 PM PDT reply actions

Hi chargers fans...

He is probably referring to 2 key plays that was a shot on ourselves feet.

1-) Oak @ DEN: losing by 4, the Broncos call a fake toss playaction with a delay route designed for a TE to go wide open on the other side. So did Daniel Fells, and Kyle Orton just fumbled the ball without anyone forcing and this was they key play for losing the season opener.

2-) DEN @ Ten: losing by 3, with around 1:40 on the clock… the Broncos were on Prater’s FG range and called a pass on the 3rd down. Kyle Orton was awful and got intercepeted on that play, ending the game that had 98% of going to overtime (this is the % of Matt Prater kicking a good FG from that spot).

However, althought j-man shows some optimism, I think our best case scenario is a 5-11 record this season. Unfortunately. And facing you guys (whom I think are the best team of AFC west) will certain be a tough game, likely to be a loss even playing at Mile High.

Hey j-man!

Now I saw you’ve already answered to BFDC.
Great to see you here too my friend.

I just disagree with you about the TEN key-play, as I liked that playcalling of trying the 4th and goal from the 1yd line. The pain in the ass for me was calling a pass when we could just call a rush with McG to spend the clock and kick a FG to tie.

Good Luck

with the rationalizations but having some experience with fan denial I can assure you that if one considers the showing vs GB as a good game , the season promises to be a long one . The biggest issue in the Broncos season will be if they can win the Andrew Luck sweepstakes or at least be close enough to trade up for him , likely since a top 10 pick is a lock . Seems like any road game is a chance at an L but I like our chance vs this crew .

Hi threecubed,

I agree with you if you’re saying if the Broncos’ showing against the Packers is an indication of how the Broncos play the rest of the year then the season will be a long one. I’m a realist and believe it is very possible the Broncos could finish the season with a top ten pick. But I don’t think j-man is just rationalizing about the losses to the Titans and the, (gulp) Raiders. I think he has a pretty good bead on the Broncos so far this year.

In the Oakland game the Raiders had been running effectively on the Broncos, but only had a three point lead. Late in the fourth quarter the Broncos’ offense had seized the momentum and had them on their heels. The Broncos were already close to field goal range. It looked like they were certain to tie or even take the lead. Orton dropped back. The vaunted Raiders’ pass rush wasn’t even close to getting to him. A receiver, a tight end I think, was wide open over the middle, for what appeared to be yet another large gain that would put them within field goal range. Orton pulled his arm back to begin the throw and then, ploink, the ball fell out of his hand about two yards in front and to the right of him. A Raider pounced on the ball and sucked the wind out of the Bronco’s sails. With so little time left, if the Broncos had been able to push the ball into the end zone and take a 4 point lead, the Raiders would have been forced to pass to try and catch up, in other words go against their strength. I would have liked the Broncos’ chances under those circumstances. At the very least, the Broncos would have been within field goal range and been able to tie it up.

In the Tennessee game the Broncos had a 14 -10 lead and a first and goal inside the five. They moved the ball to the one and had two shots at a TD. The Titans stopped McGahee, as tough an inside runner as I’ve seen on the Broncos in quite a few years, on third down. If Fox went for the field goal then the lead would have been increased to seven meaning that the Titans’ late TD at worst would have tied the game (barring a successful two point p.a.t.) and perhaps sent it into overtime. But Fox believed in his team and let McGahee take one more shot at the TD which would have put the game nearly out of reach. McGahee failed and the Titans took over on their own one needing a touch down, still a positive position but less desirable than points. The teams exchanged punts and the Titans ended up with the ball deep in their own territory, about their own 15 if I remember correctly, still needing a TD with time running out. Unfortunately, the Titans drove the length of the field for the go ahead TD. The Broncos got the ball back with a little time left and began to drive again, but Orton’s pass was tipped at the line and intercepted. The Titans converted a third down and took a knee to end the game.

So, as I hope you can see, I don’t think j-man was just rationalizing.

I don’t know how things will go this Sunday. Rivers is certainly, at the very least, a top 5 quarterback and he has a lot of his tools back this year. If Rodgers can do it against the Broncos I’m certain Rivers can too. I’m just saying these are not the 2010 Broncos. Despite the showing against the Packers, their defense is markedly improved, especially against the run and that is with many key injuries on defense; Elvis Doomerville, D.J. Williams, Champ Bailey, and Marcus Thomas, to name a few. All of whom, by the way, will be back for this Sunday’s game. And Doomerville and Miller together may very well present some huge challenges to any offensive line. Either way, it’s going to be fun.

There’s just one thing though. If the Chargers win, please don’t let the Raiders catch you in the standings. Many of their fans are already insufferable. Can you imagine what they’ll be like if they win the AFC West?

I’m just saying.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

GB wasn't a good game

But the Broncos moved the ball well both through the air and the ground, and this was before the game was out of hand. Packers jumped out to a 21-3 lead but Broncos closed it to 21-17. Unfortunately GB had a two minute drill before half and got the ball beginning of 2nd half so were able to go 35-17 before offense saw the ball again. After that Orton and Fells destructed and game got out of hand.

Healthy Champ Bailey will improve our chances.

Champ will be back. Elvis is stronger.

The only time we beat you over the last few years required our dumping Rivers on his butt numerous times while getting 2 ST touchdowns. Not betting on it happening, but with Elvis and Champ back, our beating SD is more likely than it would have been 2 weeks ago.

But our right tackle’s 20 year old brother died. I know I wouldn’t play of I was in his shoes.

I will never root for SD, but if you do win, you will be responsible (hopefully) for ending the Kyle Orton era.

Favorite Broncos-Chargers memories: Craig Morton to Haven Moses in the closing seconds to beat the Chargers on 4th down in our first Super Bowl season. Or this play…

Worst Broncos-Chargers memories: Chargers just demolishing Denver to complete Denver’s epic collapse from 8-5 to no playoffs, ending the Shanahan era. Or, my dad in the late 70s agreeing to cut my little sister’s bangs at halftime, Denver losing 23-0 at halftime to the Chargers, dad mangling my sister’s hair, sister crying for 6 hours straight in front of mirror and mom getting on dad for being a Broncos’ idiot at the expense of my sister.

What do you think has been the biggest problem with Kyle Orton this season?

His situation personally with the team

He is in a one-year deal being over paid. The team tried to trade him before the season started. So he knows he’s not wanted here…but he has to play for his future and the pressure I think is getting to him. He feels betrayed by the team and that leads to him not giving a flying f about the fans. But this is Denver we’re talking about. You can’t even look wrong at the fans if you are a QB or they grab the pitchforks and torches.

He already wasn’t clutch to begin with…now he has tons of pressure on top of that and it is causing him to make very un-Ortonlike mistakes. Before this season you wouldn’t find a much safer QB with the ball. This year he’s bumbling it away to the other team at least once per game. It is pretty discouraging and a little pathetic.
