Ask A Chiefs Fan - Halloween Week Edition

Hello once again to Bolts From The Blue, as another installment of Ask A Chiefs Fan gets under way.  This time around things are just a little bit different than the last time the Chiefs met the Chargers.  The Chiefs are coming off their biggest and most impressive win of the season, and their first ever road shutout of the Oakland Raiders, a game that saw the Chiefs pick off Raiders QB's six different times, including two that were taken back for TD's.  The Chiefs have now won three in a row after a slow start to the 2011 season.  The Chargers, meanwhile, are coming off a tough road loss to the Jets, a game that saw the Chargers take a first half lead, only to surrrender the lead and the game in the second half.

And so it comes to this:  The Chargers with a one-game lead in the division over the Chiefs, and heading into "Terrorhead Stadium" for a MNF matchup for the second year in a row, this time on a Halloween Night.  Make no mistake, the Chiefs will welcome the Chargers with open arms, especially those of Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr and Kendrick Lewis

Scaled_php_medium

Not to be outdone, Derrick Johnson will be waiting to greet any Chargers player who tries to trick him into missing a tackle.  And, perhaps the Chargers will be fortunate enough to be treated to some eye-candy type catches from Dwayne Bowe.  Regardless of the outcome, it's sure to be a (Jackie) Battle for first place in the AFC West.  No doubt the Chargers would like to "bury" the memories of last year's game in Kansas City, so it will be interesting to see what these two teams do to "carve" out a spot at the top of the division on Halloween.

Meanwhile, any questions you have for Chiefs fans, feel free to fire away and we'll do our best, as always, to answer  as soon as possible.  MNF.  Halloween.  What a treat!

Ah I see what you did there

I see a lot of chiefs fans saying they will be in first with a win monday, wouldn’t they be tied?

And how do you like Battle? I’m starting him this week…

by cameronm on Oct 25, 2011 2:52 PM PDT reply actions

yeah, they would be tied, the Chiefs do have a win over the Raiders, not sure if that gives the Chiefs an advantage within the division or not

plenty of season left to go, so it doesn’t make that much difference right now … the Chiefs just need the win here … going two games down to the Chargers (head to head) would NOT be a good thing in the end

as for Battle, why not? I have a feeling the Chiefs will try to establish the run this game more than they did against Oakland (I could be wrong, so if you do start Battle and he only picks up 12 yards, don’t blame me!)

Oakland has a better run defense between the tackles.

I’m not surprised the Chiefs didn’t run it up the gut much.

I think the Chiefs will change that up this week and attack SD at the LoS with Battle.

Have you found your groove since we last met?

Or have you just been beating up on some bad teams. I know Cassel was probably happy that the combine Oakland QBs tossed 6 ints, making his 2 picks look pro-bowl worthy…

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Oct 25, 2011 3:03 PM PDT reply actions

the game against the Vikings was beating up on a bad team, no question about it

one could say that about the Colts game as well, but the Chiefs really did seem to get their groove on in the second half of that one, coming from a pretty big second half deficit to win the game in Indianapolis

the Raiders game was one I personally thought we’d drop ina close one but it was ours from the get-go … the Raiders never did do much other than one drive and that was stuffed on a 4th-and-1 by DJ, a huge play that allowed the Chiefs to keep a 14-0 lead … our Defense owned the Raiders all game, aside from some power running by Bush

we got lucky that Campbell was out and all the Raiders had to throw at us was Boller and a barely-signed Palmer (McFadden was hurt on the first play of the game, so they were down to very few offensive weapons) … nonetheless, nobody at Arrowhead Pride is anything but proud of the rebound the team has made of late

the question now is: can they keep it going against a potent Chargers offense, especially with Antonio Gates back and catching TD passes from Rivers

'beating up on some bad team' ... pot meet kettle!

The Chiefs beat a winning team last week, something the Chargers have yet to do this year. LoL

by DivineGrace on Oct 25, 2011 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions

What do you mean by "winning team".

If it is a team that had a record about .500 when you played them, then you are correct.

However, if you go by current records, then technically, you have played two such games (Patriots and Jets) and lost them both.

And after Halloween, you’ll be 0-4 in those games :P

Oh wow, messed that up horribly.

I meant to say you would be 1-3, with the win against us being the only winning team you beat.

That’s what I get for trying to type it up really quick at work while no one is looking.

by misterbrain on Oct 28, 2011 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions

good one

too bad boller and carson palmer were playing for you guys as well. Don’t tell me your defense has just become that good. Palmer and boller GAVE you that game.

by Michaelt817 on Oct 26, 2011 9:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Look at the Lines

Our offensive line did not surrender a sack and gave Cassel plenty of time, he had a poor showing overall but some great 3rd down conversions, though I think most of that is on our receivers and their ability to get YAC.

Our defensive line also did not get a sack, but we hit the QB a lot and that caused some poor decisions and hurried throws.

I can assure you the Raiders GAVE us nothing, we took it. We controlled the LOS on both sides of the ball and our defense got the best of it.

by Spiderwomn69 on Oct 26, 2011 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Michael ... did they give it to us or did we take it?

or … both?

I hear ya, though … Rivers is much, much better than either of those guys … or both of them put together

(just curious, when the Chargers lost to the Bengals in Cincy late last year, who was the Bengals QB that day? I know it couldn’t have been Palmer out-gunning Rivers because Palmer just isn’t that good, and Palmer gave up on the Bengals team last year, so it had to be a different QB, right?)

To be fair..

Once of Cassel’s INTs was a Hail Mary at the end of the half, after a lackluster effort to maybe get some more points. I can’t really count that one against him.

I agree that other one looked pretty bad, especially since Cassel had so much time to throw.

I think if anything, our D has found its groove. And that alone should be able to keep us competitive. And the Offense is definitely improved from the first 3 games.

by misterbrain on Oct 25, 2011 10:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Hard to predict, but how do you think the weather will be?

That weather last years sucked big time!

Congrats on all those int’s w/o Eric Berry in the line up. Do you still consider the Cheifs a run first team after losing Jamal?

by Trendsearcher on Oct 25, 2011 3:45 PM PDT reply actions

yah, that rain was no fun for either team last year ...

I imagine this year will be dry but cool, very cool but likely not freezing (a bit early to predict that, but I know a weather system will be moving thru in a day or so, should be gone well before gametime)

thanks for the props … we still have a VERY dangerous secondary, esp Carr and Flowers, though Gates has always been trouble for us and likely will be again, he’s just so damned good

seems we might have to pass a bit first to open up the run now that Jamaal Charles is out … when we tried to simply be a “run first” team early on in the season we were getting stuffed … then too, Battle wasn’t playing much if at all, and Thomas Jones wasn’t/isn’t doing much … Battle had a breakout game against the Colts (nobody saw it coming, including Chiefs fans) but the Raiders were tough as nails to run on (they still have a very tough defense, even if their offense is way out of sync)

Cassel has improved since early on, finding a bit of chemistry with Bow and Breaston, and we no have Baldwin healthy and on the field some, so we’ll see how that goes … but I do think we need to pass to keep defenses honest and get a little room for the running game to get going

It kinda seems like Jones and McCluster are getting long in the tooth

I had to pick up Jones (after losing Charles – ouch!) in FF and I am not thrilled by his output. I really thought the Chiefs were up grading during the pre-season. They were getting younger and better in the O-line. I thought Jones could add quality depth. It doesn’t seem like he has.

So is Jackie Battle the only significant threat at RB?

by Trendsearcher on Oct 26, 2011 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

McCluster is just cutting his teeth...2nd year out of 'Ol Miss...

Battle and McCluster are the two that should carry the most…

I hope they run Battle a majority of the time to soften the D up a bit for McCluster to blaze through…I see Battle taking Jones’ role from last year and McCluster trying to fill in for Charles’ role…

First of all, you throwin' too many big words at me, and because I don't understand them, I'm gonna take 'em as disrespect...

No joke...

I was talking a little smack with Raider fans after the game telling them that had Berry played we would have picked off their sorry QBs 10 times.

Do you imagine a scenario where we could, say, sell Hudson to a Japanese team?

by Natrone Means Business on Oct 25, 2011 4:00 PM PDT reply actions

meh, depends on how much you need ...

my guess is 3-5 catches, 50 yds and MAYBE 1 TD (tops) … he’s a decent 2nd or 3rd for us but not going to get the touches or production of a Bowe or Gates

He'll probably have Cason covering him (or a rookie)

I expect a HUGE game from either Breaston, or a breakout game for Baldwin

by cpa913 on Oct 26, 2011 7:19 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not too down on Cason this week

His problems come form the big WRs. Breaston is 6’.
I’m hoping Cason can improve. Breaston didn’t abuse him too bad in week 3.

The rookie (Gilchrist) is pretty good

Granted, we’ve only seen a bit from him but he’s performed well.

Hopefully he catches the one TD the Chiefs score on Monday

Don't you mean the one *passing* TD the Chiefs score?

I mean, they’ll get a rushing TD, a defensive TD and a ST TD as well.

Although with the way our D has been playing, we should only need 1 TD to win :P

Line Bowe up against Cason and He'll score a TD every play.

Depends.

He’ll likely get around 60 yards and a TD. That’s about his average. If that works for you then go for it.

should be a fun one, yes?

as a Chiefs fan I know games can go in any direction … we’ve seen our team be all over the spectrum just this year alone

but Rivers with Gates back scares me, it’s really just that simple … we’ve never been able to shut Gates down before and I can’t imagine we’ll be able to this time … the big issue is can we stop VJ and the run gameand hold Gates “in check” just enough to steal a win

Unless you count the goal line stand last year… when KC shut him down.

Hey Natrone

You are my all time favorite Chargers running back. Do you have anything left in your tank? Do you think that maybe you could come back a game or two and give us a hand? Do you think that maybe you could “re-charge” the Chargers?
