Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Will Never Top Michael Jordan

2011 NFL Power Rankings from Around the Web: Week 6

I bet you all thought I forgot about this post. Ha-ha, the joke's on you! I didn't forget, I just was too busy today to get everything written up. Darn those day jobs and their money and junk.

Anyway, this week finds many-a-Chargers-fan conflicted about their team. On the one hand, this team is 4-1 heading into their bye. This is uncharted territory for any team under the helm of one Norv Turner. On the other hand, the team has appeared a bit off so far this season, especially El Capitan. Hopefully they shake off whatever is affecting them and come out of the bye stronger than ever.

You will soon see, though, that those concerns aren't completely unfounded. I don't want to spoil anything, but the truth is in the numbers.

Notable Quotes

Fox Sports

The Chargers continue to prove they actually can win in September and October, but they need to start creating more seperation between themselves and the average teams. Just when they begin to run the ball the way Norv Turner wants they get pretty banged up at the position. QB Philip Rivers misses his favorite target in TE Antonio Gates, and they will only get better when he returns from injury.

Sports Illustrated

Running back Ryan Mathews has produced five consecutive games of at least 100 yards combined rushing and receiving this season, after managing that just once as a rookie in 2010 -- with that coming in Week 17. He ran for a career-best 125 yards in Sunday's win at Denver, and this is the weapon San Diego envisioned when it spent a first-round pick on Mathews.

SBNation

They're winning, but they're not blowing anyone out. For some reason, I think that's actually a good thing.

Observations:

  • At 5-0, it should be no surprise that the Lions are now ranked 4th.
  • While the Chargers are indeed 4-1, there are some doubts of just how good they are. Their 4 wins have come against teams that have a collected 4-15 record right now.
  • After holding down the bottom spot for a while, Kansas City is climbing the board again.
  • We were warned before the season started to not write Miami off, that they could be dangerous. Guess they were wrong.

Observations:

  • Green Bay, still unanimously #1. Don't expect that to change until they lose, and only if they lose to a bad team.
  • Speaking of bad teams, Miami is consistently bad.
  • The Chargers are one of the most consistently-ranked teams at this time.
  • Way to go, Rex Ryan. At least your team can score high on something.

So what do all these numbers mean, exactly?

Subjective avg, Objective avg, Composite avg, STD DEV, red and green boxes…..what does all of this mean??

My name may not be Pete

But, I’ve stopped explaining what the different charts mean because I’ve been doing this series for 2 years now, and this is already the 7th edition this year. So I figured most already knew what was going on.

At any rate, you’re familiar with Power Rankings, yes? If not, then Power Rankings are a list of the 32 NFL teams broken down in a #1 through #32 ranking, usually with interesting comments (biased or not) and factoids included about each team.

  • Subjective Average: “Subjective” rankings are rankings that are determined by people just ranking based on their own gut feelings. ESPN, CBS, etc all are subjective rankings because it’s just people’s opinions on how good teams are.
  • Objective Average: “Objective” rankings are determined by crunching numbers and letting a computer decide where each team ranks. Sites like Football Outsiders and their DVOA metric are trying to use pure situational stats to determine how good teams are.
  • Composite Average: the composite average is simple: take a team’s Subjective Average and their Objective Average, and find the average between the two. Put even more simply, it’s: (SubjAvg + ObjAvg) / 2.
  • STD DEV: Short for “Standard Deviation,” this is a statistics tool used to determine how close the numbers in a set are to each other. The lower the StdDev, the more consistent the numbers. A StdDev of 0.0 — as in the case of the Green Bay Packers in the Subjective Rankings — means all the rankings are the same. A high StdDev indicates teams that are wildly inconsistent in their rankings.
  • Colors: Green is good, white is mediocre, red is bad (generally). I color code the boxes to give a quick visual representation of scale. The deeper the green color, the better. The deeper the red color, the worse.

Green is good (generally?)

Under your Difference In Averages [Subj vs Obj] the last column seems to represent each team incorrectly according to Colors. Or is overrated considered a “good thing?”

by dashen87 on Oct 13, 2011 7:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Hence the "generally"

I was conflicted on which way to code that scale when I first started this series.

I settled on green being “overrated” because my thinking at the time was that the Objective rankings sites tend to be slow to catch up to a team’s performance. Subjective rankings tend to be more reactionary, and can be a predictor of future performance. So I, at the time I started doing this, settled on being overrated being a good thing in this sense because it could ultimately mean the objective rankings catch up and the team does well.

Thank you

I should have stated initially that this concentrated look at the overall rankings across a full spectrum is absolutely incredible to review.
Major props for the effort involved and I most certainly do look forward to the weekly rankings recap. Thanks, again.

Thanks and suggestion

I love what you’ve got going here. It saves me from having to look up all of those rankings for my own curiosity, and shows me some I didn’t know existed.

Also, thank you for including BeatGraphs in your numbers this week. I noticed that you chose to use the Weighted method rankings. I would suggest using the Standard method numbers though, as one game can tend to skew the Weighted graphs. For example, the beatdown SF gave to TB. If TB turns out to be a good team and SF doesn’t, it’ll be nearly impossible for TB to wipe out that loss on the Weighted graph.

by BeatGraphs on Oct 13, 2011 7:58 AM PDT reply actions

I'll take the blame for suggesting weighted BeatGraphs

Thanks for your input… guess I don’t understand it well enough, as I thought weighted might be more accurate. Even in my ignorance, really like what you’re doing over there. Hope to see you around here more.

by Leukadian on Oct 13, 2011 8:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Not a problem

I understand. The names for the methods have always been a sticking point for us, but those are what we came up with. Basically put, the Standard method treats all games equally. If a loop is found, all games from that loop are removed. In the Weighted method, the games are given a “weight” by the margin of victory. Therefore a link from a 3-point win will be broken before a 7-point win. Personally, I prefer the Iterative method which is a little more complicated.

The “accuracy” of all three methods can be debated though.

by BeatGraphs on Oct 13, 2011 9:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Thanks for the clarification!

I too figured the weighted graph would be the more accurate one as well, based solely on name alone, heh.

Since you’re the expert, I’ll start using the iterative chart in the future. This shouldn’t affect the results really because the rankings are only really compared to themselves for a given time period. I’m not comparing numbers to the past or anything.

Jesus Palomino !

More number crunching , that subjective number doesn’t factor in IQ does it ? Most morons ( or football fans if you prefer ) can’t rank for shit and the experts ? I’m still curious as to exactly what that is and who they are . Thanks for the read .

The premier analysis of this type of info

Best anywhere. Nice work, as always. If I were a betting man, I’d try my luck with the subj v. obj chart in Vegas.

When does DVOA eliminate their pre-season projection component (too lazy to look it up)? I’ve always thought that was the shakiest part of their early season rankings, and I wonder if it’s why it’s such an outlier compared to the other obj rankings.

Subj rankings looks like a big groupthink… not a whole late of variation between columns up and down the chart.

by Leukadian on Oct 13, 2011 8:44 AM PDT reply actions

The FBO ranking is now purely DVOA

It no longer factors in pre-season projections.

With the Niners below the Raiders too. Lol. At least he is not die hard, all the 5-0s in order, then the 4-1s, then the 3-2s etc. Some raters will never deviate much past records, which is not the whole story, especially not this early.

LOL

Yea I exchanged tweets with him yesterday on that. He had chargers below some 2-3 teams. His answer was they looked shakey and were 9-7 last year, so it was hard to know. I respect his opinions, but he is at least 3-5 slots too low.

Not that ratings matter, winning the day of game matters, which is mostly what the Chargers are doing, so I can’t complain.

The Standard Deviation perspective kinda seems uneeded to me

Really in the standard deviation we are considering differences in the judgments of the various outlets. To me it seems pretty clear cut that the outlets can generally agree on the best and worst teams, and then they diverge as they get to the middle.

Is the standard deviation perspective attempting to describe shades of gray? I think you kind get the shades of gray by the rolled up rankings, taken with the caveat that the sequencing in the middle is subject to a bit more error.

It is cool that you are rolling up multiple sources. It begins to draw on the power of group decision making.

The seahawks proved this week there is no such power :)

To each there own

There are plenty of people who love the standard deviation sorting, just as much as you could be without it.

And I do take issue with your statement that “outlets generally agree on the best and worst teams, and then they diverge as they get to the middle.” There have been plenty of instances where #14 has been fairly consistent, or there was no agreement on #1 or #32. This changes from week to week and many other readers find plenty of value in the standard deviation.

I really like this.

Through the week I usually go around and check the varying things myself but having the aggregation available is a major boon, so big props for your hard work every week.

If I could make a minor suggestion, I notice you added BeatGraphs (great ranking site btw) but there’s still a 3:1 ratio of subjective vs. objective rankings. This causes a certain heavy weight to the few number of objective rankings there are.

In the subjective rankings you’ve got, say, the 49ers who’re ranking between 7-9 with blips of 12-14 that don’t really skew the average much (but are represented in the standard deviation charts), whereas in the objective ranking a 10th place FO puts Minnesota up to a 19th ranked team when the concensus from all others is 22.6.

The subjective rankings are really good at giving a snapshot of what the consensus of a lot of places are thinking, whereas the objective rankings don’t give you as much of one. There are a whole lot of really good objective rankings available that could help give a larger perspective on what the “stats guys” around the internet say, like Advanced NFL Stats’s predictive power rankings, Massey Ratings, The Dunkel Index, and others.

I don’t wish to add any extra unwanted workload or anything, I know how much work goes into these sorts of things (particularly updating it weekly, good heavens). Just throwing those out there if they are of any use to you. .

Thank you!

I’m always open to adding new sites, especially objective rankings sites. I used to use Advanced NFL Stats’ team efficiency rankings, but I guess they aren’t doing that this year.

I’ll look into adding the Massey Ratings and Dunkel Index to next week’s. I’m also considering adding the Aikman Efficiency Ratings, but he tends to be a bit inconsistent on when those are posted.

Cheers.

One other I’m aware of is The Power Rank (very basic strength of schedule / point differential algorithm based on Google’s pagerank algorithm). Advanced NFL Stats still have their team efficiency rankings (here) but they can be a little hard to find. Basically you have to go to the home page and wait for the article to show up, because using the dropdown menu to find the team efficiency rankings is only updated to last year.

Standard deviation mathematics quibble

I’m not sure the standard deviation chart is actually displaying teams that have the most variation in how they’re ranked from site-to-site.

Basically, teams in the middle of the rankings will always be subject to more variation (not just because they’re perceived as tougher to rank) because there are more slots available for them to deviate towards.

For example, the Packers cannot range from 1 “up” to 30, only from 1 down to 32. The odds of ranking systems differeing in 31 full units is significantly less than the odds of a team ranked 16/17 being ranked 1 or 32. In essence, the teams ranked closer towards the bounds of the rankings have less realistic - in the mathematical sense, not just the practical one — units to which their rankings can differ.

This means that a team ranked 3 in one poll being ranked 8 in another is a more mathematically robust difference than a team ranked 16 being ranked 21 in another. This should be reflected in the standard deviation chart. One way to do this would be taking the maximum deviation that any team exhibits in a week as a baseline. Say, for example, that some team differs by 8. Each team can then have their deviations scaled in a way that apapts to the number of units they can move to on either side, capped at 8 in any direction.
