Nnamdi Asomugha?

So ESPN reported today that Nnamdi Asomugha is set to be a free agent this off season after his contract was voided.  Personally, I can't help but wonder how good the Chargers could be with Asomugha playing for them.  I think that it is about time that the Chargers signed a big name free agent to help us get to the Super Bowl.

I am thinking a Asomugha - Cason duo would be pretty awesome.  We could also move Quentin Jammer to safety along side Weddle. So what do you guys think?  Do you think this move could be a realistic  possibility?

right

because he’s stupid not because Nnamdi is going to be looking for insane money…which he will get somewhere

by jkvandal on Jan 11, 2011 1:42 PM PST up reply actions

No thanks

He’s not worth what he’s going to demand. He’s also 29, and is likely to demand a long-term contract. We already have an aging CB waiting to make the move to safety. I’d love to have another experienced guy back there, but our secondary doesn’t really need the help right now. Jammer is getting older but is still very good. What we really need is to draft a CB relatively high this year, to give him time to learn.

before we rule him out

let’s find out what his demands are, first.

The peanut gallery has spoken!!!

by gatesoftds on Jan 9, 2011 8:01 PM PST up reply actions

We can assume certain things

One of which is, he will want a ton of money. Another is, he will want something long-term. A third is, some team like the Redskins will pay it.

All that aside, how does he fit into the system? He’s a man-to-man guy, and is very good at it. Our defense often plays zone. That transition is difficult to make. If he can’t make the change, one high-priced FA can essentially dictate the defensive style because we have to play to his strength, or risk losing him mentally (e.g. Haynesworth). That’s bad for the team as a whole.

We also have to consider what we already have. Jammer is a very good #1 CB, and has not shown any reason to move him to safety yet. He has said that he is willing to make the switch at some point, but why should he be willing to do so now? Cason had a very good year as a first-time starter at CB2 and has every reason to expect that he will be there again next year. He also has good reason to expect that he will be the CB1 in a couple years if he does well. We are set for another year at least, but have a clear need for developmental depth. What we don’t need is a high-priced FA to screw with chemistry in the secondary and limit defensive scheme options. Players are not chess pieces, and ignoring their egos can get a team into a lot of trouble. AJ has done an excellent job of removing the troublesome guys, but everyone has pride and the team has to respect that.

Asomugha may be a step up on what we have, but it’s not a big enough step to make him worth the costs.

very well laid out

except Jammer is looking to move over to safety, as he gets older, but that also is not in AJ’s plans. so jammer will be gone sooner than later, as his contract will be up soon. Cason is playing like 1st rounder they expected him to be and will only get better. as for man coverage they all played man out of college, (even cro) but jammer played safety. but as it stands now, we don’t play zone very well either. to play that coverage you need guys that can close on a receiver that “looks” open Nnamdi has that speed and he’s a smart DB.

all that aside what has getting rid of all the troublesome guys gotten us? sitting at home? is troublesome asking for a long term deal? is it asking to be compensated for performance on the field? is it asking to be used in other aspects of the offense of defense? Nnamdi is a step up to getting to a championship, now i’m no math major but how much is a Lombari trophy worth to at least “pursue” the idea.

AJ has done a good job, but i’m not going to drink that Kool-aid just yet. all the “troublesome” players, as well as the replacements of special teams were his picks. ALL OF THEM. so forgive me if i don’t beam with confidence over our prospects that are developing now.

Getting rid of Cromartie made sense

And not giving Jackson a huge money, long term deal did as well.
The point have certainly been discussed quite heavily but I’ll summarize:

Cromartie: Not dedicated to tackling, made a fool of himself by not attempting to tackle Shonn Greene in the playoffs…PLAYOFFS! Couldn’t remain on the team after that.

Jackson: 2 strikes against the substance abuse policy, 1 more strike and he misses an entire year (but he’d still get all of his guaranteed money). Nearly got arrested the morning of a playoff game…PLAYOFFS! Cannot be trust on the field (too many bonehead plays and penalties) or off the field.

Are we a better offense with Jackson on the field, sure.
Are we a better defense with Cromartie on the field, not a chance in hell.

for the record, i wanted Cro to go.

that is the one player i completely agree with AJ on, that had to go. but i’m not quite ready to throw in the towel on VJ.

Our defense typically ran zone under Rivera

but a lot could change with a new DC. We might be moving back to more of a man-to-man system…but I dont think Nnamdi will be wearing bolts next season. Agree with drafting an athletic high-upside CB in the 2-3 round to develop for the future since he doesn’t need to start immediately.

by jkvandal on Jan 11, 2011 1:45 PM PST up reply actions

You're right about the coaching change

It hadn’t happened yet so I didn’t want to get into that. While that concern may change, I think the other points stand. The money is better spent elsewhere.

by aesimpleton on Jan 11, 2011 5:32 PM PST up reply actions

yes he is worth it

i want to win, and i want the best players in the secondary we can get. Jammer moves over to Safety with weddle, and cason can stay where he is. that is a back filed that ready to shut down the “pass first” league. if new york can have reavis and cromartie. we can have cason jammer and Nnamdi.

besides this would go a long way to winning back mu confidence in th teams commitment to win. and getting a BIG free agent acquisition. he takes of two things, we get a solid DB at CB and we can use those draft picks elsewhere on the team.

i agree as well

it’s Safety we need help at. jammer is built for it and he’s made suggestions to move over into that position.

The peanut gallery has spoken!!!

by gatesoftds on Jan 10, 2011 10:30 AM PST up reply actions

Disagree. A shutdown corner is always a big need unless you already have two.

With a Cason/Weddle/Jammer/Asomugha secondary, we’d be able to get a lot more bang for our front 7 buck. With a new defensive coordinator coming in, Nmandi would definitely be worth considering.

The main drawback is that we have a lot of free agents to sign on this team already. The money may not be there.

by RiversMVP on Jan 10, 2011 6:28 PM PST up reply actions

Disagree with Zach that CB isn't a big need.

If Jammer were a few years younger, I’d agree. Namdi’s age obviously undercuts my point, but a rare talent that shuts down 1/2 the field doesn’t come around that often.

I guess I disagree with you since you were agreeing with Zach.

No i was agreeing that a CB isn't a "Big need"..rather suggesting..

that Nnamdi allows us to move jammer over to compliment Weddle, which is wear jammer stated he’d like to go. and give a much needed improvement at Safety,an then improving the secondary overall.

whether we could afford it or not? who knows? but it never hurt to try, buy opening a conversation.

by gatesoftds on Jan 12, 2011 11:36 PM PST up reply actions

Although Jammer has really become a good corner

I’ve always thought he’d be an even better safety. He’s big and a good tackler and at his best when the play is in front of him. His biggest weakness has always been looking back for the ball when running stride-for-stride with the receiver.

The thong is, it happened.

by Goofus on Jan 13, 2011 10:56 AM PST up reply actions

I wonder how much money he'll want

He’s earned a buttload of money already (nearly $40M over the last three seasons) playing for a crappy team. If he’s at the point where taking a shot at a champoinship is more important than going to the highest bidder, then maybe there’s a fit.

Other than the price, he seems like an AJ guy. I live in the bay area and by all acounts Asomugha is exactly the type of classy guy you want on your team; hard-worker, team leader.

If you like “character” you’re not going to find many people in the NFL or life in general, that give back like he does. I hate that he’s a Raider because I’ve always admired him. Yeah, this is a little long, but check this out from the “Philanthropy” section of his wikipedia page:

Off the field, education and community service are his mainstays. Asomugha serves as Chairman for the Orphans and Widows In Need (OWIN) Foundation. Through OWIN, Asomugha and his family provide food, shelter, medicine, vocational training, literacy efforts, and scholarships to widows and orphans victimized by poverty or abuse in Nigeria. Currently, OWIN has two centers in Nigeria and plans to expand to other countries in Africa.26

In 2006, Asomugha launched the annual Asomugha College Tour for Scholars (ACTS) program. Each year, he teams up with selected students from Bay Area high schools on college tours across the country. To date, Asomugha has taken students to visit Morehouse College, Spelman College, Georgia Institute of Technology, Clark Atlanta University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University, Brown University and the Berklee College of Music. All of the tour participants who have graduated from high school have gone on to attend higher education institutions.27 For the 2009 tour, Asomugha took students to visit schools in New York City including NYU, Columbia University, The Juilliard School, The Fashion Institute of Technology, Fordham University and The New School.28

In 2010, ACTS will expand to not only service high school students in the Bay Area but also select high schools in the Los Angeles area. For the 2010 tour, ACTS will visit schools in Washington D.C.

Asomugha joined former President Bill Clinton, Matthew McConaughey, and Marie Tillman at the 2009 Meeting of Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) hosted by The University of Texas at Austin to discuss the importance of global service and student activism. CGI U is President Clinton’s youth initiative designed to challenge college students to take action on some of the most pressing global issues in areas such as education, poverty and global health. At CGI U, Asomugha spoke to over 1,200 student leaders, university presidents and leaders of national youth organizations about his philanthropic efforts in Nigeria and Oakland, CA .29

Additionally, Asomugha distributes backpacks to the incoming freshmen each year at Narbonne High School in Los Angeles. He also outfits the football and basketball team with shoes, a mandate he wrote into an endorsement contract he signed with Nike.

For his commitment to community service, Asomugha was named a Home Depot Neighborhood MVP 2007 30

In 2008, Asomugha was presented with The President’s Volunteer Service Award. An award that was established to recognize the important contributions Americans of all ages are making within their communities through service and civic engagement.31

Essence Magazine selected Asomugha as one of the "Do Right Men of 2008", highlighting his success and philanthropic endeavors 32

Asomugha has been recognized by fellow members of the NFL Players Association who nominated him in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 for the Byron “Whizzer” White Award for Outstanding Community Service.

Asomugha was also nominated for the prestigious Sports Illustrated 2008 Sportsman of the Year award.33

In 2009, Asomugha was named to the "Dream Team for Public Service" by the Jefferson Awards for Public Service.34

In 2010, Asomugha was presented with the 44th annual Byron “Whizzer” White NFL Man of the Year, the NFL Players Association’s (NFLPA) highest honor35

In 2010, Asomugha became the ambassador for United Way of the Bay Area UWBA, dedicated to creating long-lasting change and ensuring all Bay Area residents have access to the building blocks to a better life: education, income and health.

Get over it. Not happening.

They’ll draft a guy in the first this year if they can’t find a killer pass-rush OLB. If/when Jammer moves to safety or finds another team, they’ll be ready for it.

This is the right strategy for the team’s current and future needs. I also want an ILB in there someplace, but the options are limited.

Different draft pick

You don’t take an ILB at #18, and you only take him at #50 if you’re really sure you have a stud. #56-64, from the Jets, at the earliest.

Agreed Nnamdi might seem like a good pick up, but
Get over it. Not happening.

Nnamdi is getting older and the mileage is adding up. He’s missed time the last two seasons. At WR and Secondary you have to always be looking to get younger.

29 is fine for a QB or a Lineman.

If that's the case I would feel a lot better about it

Aside from the fact we’d be picking up a high-priced guy who’s not getting any younger. I also really don’t think it’s going to happen anyway.

you are probably correct..

but on flip side PR isn’t getting any younger either, and that doesn’t stop the them from playing revolving door with his WR.

QBs last longer

CBs have to keep pace with WRs. QBs just have to keep up their arm strength and health. Look at Favre. I can’t stand him, but he lasted forever. The only comparison I can think of for a CB is Bailey, and he isn’t anywhere near what he used to be.

by aesimpleton on Jan 13, 2011 6:33 PM PST up reply actions

i get that

my point was, chemistry is important and getting a QB good chemistry in his prime with the WR is even better. and Nnamdi’s age isn’t as big a deal here. his experience and overall talent are still able to cover the field. and even with his leadership and knowledge he can pass on to the younger guys, only make him more valuable in my eyes.

where i’m coming form overall is, you can’t keep passing up good opportunities to put the best players on the field, that may give yourself the best chance to compete for championships.

The peanut gallery has spoken!!!

I agree with the need for a few solid FAs

… Not sure Corner is the biggest need, or Nnamdi is the guy.

But definitely Dean should MAKE AJ begin again to use Free Agency. AJ has drafted well, and done awesome with UDFAs. But it is a copy cat league, and you can’t deny the Jets’ success in building with FA.

by Trendsearcher on Jan 14, 2011 11:07 AM PST up reply actions

it's not CB i'm aiming for

it’s “safety” we need help with. Jammer is looking to move to that position, and would be willing to do so for Nnamdi.

Sure he’s no longer as great as he was when he first came out but he had one helluva season last year and is still going strong this year.

Nnamdi is still a star for another 2-3 seasons

I still don’t see the chargers being the biggest offer, so he would have to take less money to sign here. Maybe he likes Norv, and trusts Philip, and wants to have revenge on the Raiders. I still wouldn’t bet on it
