Rich Bisaccia Hired as new Special Teams Coordinator
Bisaccia previously held the title of Special Teams Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach in Tampa Bay. In Tampa, he worked under famed Defensive Coordinator Monte Kiffin and at one point had both (now Steelers Head Coach) Mike Tomlin and (now Buccaneers Head Coach) Raheem Morris working for him.
Bisaccia was with the Buccaneers for 9 years and was a part of the 2002 Super Bowl Champion team that defeated the Raiders in San Diego. It was under his watch that the Buccaneers ended their franchise drought of going their whole history returning a kick for a touchdown.

So what you're saying is
Whoever he hires to work under him should be our next head coach? Got it.

it is snowing
my january is complete. Rich Bisaccia? how do I pronounce that… bï-sà-chia?

Anyone
else think this was a double-move? Fix special teams and to have a new assistant head coach in case Chud does leave?
I was thinking that
But no word yet that he’s the assistant head coach. Most likely he had that title in Tampa since he was more experienced than their actual head coach.

Then they lost 10 in a row, ‘twas like a punch in the jock!

Chud
is still with us, for the moment, right? My thought was that this was a cover our ass kind of move.

Well the STs unit can't get any worse than it was this year.
We could bring in Kermit the Frog as ST’s coach and probably see better results in 2011.
Some folks
will tell you Kermit is already a coach on this team…because AJ’s hand is up Norv’s ass! ZING!

Football Outsiders
ranked TB as average in STs. Seems like they were good in 09, but mediocre again in ’08.

True
But generally if your kid is flunking out, you don’t bring in a tutor who got Cs.

Well, I'm guessing
That the ones who got B’s and A’s are keeping their jobs.
So, your choices are Cs, Ds, Fs and the guys who haven’t been ST coordinators yet. I think this just shows that they still value experience over potential.

Normally I would say experience wins out over potential
But recent memory has added some bias to my opinion.

"Average" would have gotten the Chargers into the playoffs
And “average” would probably have gotten them to the divisional round. It’s really hard to overstate just how costly those special teams gaffes were.
Are Marlon McCree and Antonio Cromartie the same person? Just askin'.
Seems to me that the Bucs have had issues with FG kickers
For all the issues with Kaeding, I don’t think a new ST coach is going to change him much. Plus, I think this guy’s specialty is the return and coverage units anyway.
What I’m trying to say is that if those numbers include FG kickers, then they could be off enough to not be the greatest evaluation method for our needs.

For what it's worth
Acee said he thinks the Chargers will bring in a kickoff specialist (finally).

Fair Point
In reading the overview it looks like it factors as much as a punt or kickoff.

Newbie here (Buccaneer/Padres fan)
Bisaccia will be a great addition for you guys. He was universally loved by staff and players in Tampa but I think he may have felt "stuck’ in his position there and he feels that your beloved Chargers offer him greener pastures professionally and/or financially.
If you look more deeply into his record of achievement I believe you will realize that he is a quality guy.
And as others here have noted before me, the Chargers STs were a disaster this year so you have nowhere to go but up.
Good luck next season!
Hope for the best for Bisaccia
I just don’t want the ST coach position to be the new “Padres Hitting Coach”, if you catch my drift.
Though I doubt that he could be any worse than what happened this year.
Light a fire under Scifres
That guy has the biggest leg in the league, shanks more then ever, drops balls, and couldn’t kick in Cincy even though the other punter with less of a leg could in the same direction. Yes he took more hits than more punters in a career but man up.
Thoughts? "I have none. If there are any other developments, we will let you know." Charger GM - AJ Smith.

wait what?
I wouldn’t take any punter over him. Scifres might be the only good thing we have going on special teams…
Did you not watch the playoff game against the colts when he pinned them inside the 10 like 12 billion times?
SCIFRES IS THE GREATEST PUNTER TO WALK THE EARTH.

O yeah
Scifres does not need to man up. He is one of the few players on our special teams that actually try to tackle the returner.
"couldn’t kick in Cincy even though the other punter with less of a leg could in the same direction"
Not trying to make excuses, but this is the way the announcers and other reporters talked about it. The wind when Scifres was kicking was strong. Later, when Cincy faced hat direction the wind was not blowing strong at all.
I think one person even asked Acee about the wind being a factor later in the game and he laughed a little and said that wind had died down a long time ago and was only a problem early.
That’s wind for ya. Wind is kind of a jerk.

DVOA.

I remember writing this after the game.....
Scifres: 4 punts, 31.8 average
Huber: 4 punts, 32.3 average
Man, Mike really got embarrassed out there.

I don't think you need to light a fire under him
Unless that helps him stay healthy somehow.

It would help to keep the other team from hitting him
Or to keep him from having to tackle punt returners.
