On Tuesday, the team cut quarterback Jonathan Crompton from the practice squad. They don't need four quarterbacks during the week, and they wanted to grab tight end Kory Sperry for the practice squad. Sperry, a promising player they had in camp last year, was just released by the Denver Broncos. He played for Miami in '09.
Hughes released to make room for QB
Well, that answers that question.

Well, that makes Crompton officially a bust; this year’s Gartrell. I’m still suprised they didn’t keep him for development as a 3rd QB over O’Sullivan. Not sure what O’sullivan brings to the table other than his veteran-ness. I thought that’s why we had Volek? I saw crompton play UCLA last year and I was not very impressed, but figured this was a long term drafting. You’d think we would have seen some signs that management wasn’t happy with his camp. Guess the Volek-is-dinged-up theory is dead.
So presumably Sperry is an upgrade on Epps, and from what KA tweets, we'll be placing Hughes on the PS and releasing Epps.

I like it
I liked Sperry a lot last year and glad we got him back. He got some big game experience last season with Miami that can only help him develop. Besides, now there’s a youngster to push Wilson to keep him from dropping easy passes like he did in the preseason.
Loved Sperry in camp last year. Great hands and feet, just needs to work on the blocking.

he definitely fits the mold of what we seem to look for in a TE
good routes and hands, and a willingness to block. We are not looking for Manumaleuna’s replacement as a blocker, just someone who takes good angles and gets in people’s way.
For all you SAT analogy lovers:
As Lorenzo Neal is to Jacob Hester
So Manumaleuna is to the current crop of TEs

Quick question from an outsider-
Will Brandon Silar or Kevin Burrnett start at the 2nd ILB spot and how much do you expect Burnett to contribute if he’s not the starter?
Burnett will be the starter next to Stephen Cooper
Siler is listed as Cooper’s backup, James Holt is there backing up Burnett.
"Don’t get nervous. Norv is in charge."
This years rotation at ilb has yet to be determined. Last year siler was our running down ilb while Burnett was the passing down guy. In the preseason this year, Burnett was the full time #1 ilb. We’ll have to see how things shake out in the regular season.

I think part of last year's rotation
Was based on Burnett’s injury and lack of experience with the team. He’s, in theory, healthier and more experience here. It wouldn’t surprised me if Siler saw less of the field. Then again it wouldn’t surprise me if he saw more.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Both guys have pretty similar talent levels
Siler stepped it up big time last year, and Burnett came in and showed he could cover the slants even though he’s a big guy. I like how they both play, not much of a trade off if either guy is in.

I guess the coaching staff and AJ didn't like the practice squad guys?
Crompton gone, Epps could be gone, Hansen could be gone, somebody will be gone if Hughes signs on to the practice squad.
Maybe I'm seeing the black helicopters again...
But I think both Epps and Sperry could be on PS this year. McMichael is probably done after this year. And Kris Wilson raised some questions in my mind when the ball kept bouncing off those numbers on the front of his jersey.
Obviously Gates is around for the long haul, but if Epps and Sperry have the physical skills, I could see the team locking ’em down early for next season. The best time to buy is when the product is avalible.

Question guys who do you like more?
Curtis Brinkley or Gartrell Johnson? I would take Brinkley he seemed to run as hard as Gartrell and have more speed.
Hacksaw Hamilton was pushing to bring back the former charger RB, I just don’t see the need.
Brinkley
He’s smaller, but has some good moves.
Gartrell is just a little too slow for RB at this level, and I don’t know if he has the size to switch to FB. Admittedly he’s had a tough nut to crack the line ups in either San Diego or New York.

Does this mean
he is no longer a Charger and will never be one?
by sixpakfrombelgium on Sep 8, 2010 7:57 AM PDT reply actions
will not be a charger this year, and seems to indicate that the team doesn’t have faith in his future prospects
