Bolt-Load of Links: 9/7 Chargers Links

  • Newest players must get in swing | North County Times
The Chargers identified a few problem spots on the depth chart during training camp and are trying to fix them with a series of veteran acquisitions. The team picked up receiver Patrick Crayton in a trade, cornerback Fred Bennett off waivers and offensive tackle Adam Terry and quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan via free agency over the last week.

The recently concluded camp will be known almost for as much as who wasn't here and those in attendance.
  • And we are off! Week 1; Chargers vs. Chiefs | Bolt Talk
Winning in Arrowhead is never easy, the Chargers currently have won the last few time in Arrowhead, and with one more victory they can tie their all time winning streak against the Chiefs, six games. Further, a win by the Chargers would even out the record between the two teams at 50-50-1.

Instead of linking to each individual story (at current count, there are four), I'm just linking to the whole list. Arrowhead Pride breaks down many aspects of next week's game between the Chargers and Chiefs.

On his first kick of the 2009 regular season, Chargers punter Mike Scifres doubled over, returned to the sideline and explained to athletic trainer James Collins that when he kicked it felt as if someone had reared back and, in return, kicked him as hard as they could. Down there.
  • Corners Add Depth
By keeping six cornerbacks, the Chargers have depth at each position and players that can be key contributors on special teams.

“The Chargers identified a few problem spots on the depth chart during training camp and are trying to fix them with a series of veteran acquisitions”

All of these seem created by Smith.

We picked up a WR, OL and CB.

Let’s see…
We are going to go without our best WR because Smith is trying to prove something. I am fine with not re-doing VJ’s contract, but the arbitrary lowball number as a back up does not create much incentive for VJ to play this year.

Got rid of Cro. His play was not great and had some off-field stuff, but, come on, what was our replacement? Cason?

OL. Same thing as with VJ.

I like his drafts, but man does he have an ego. If he could separate his ego from his player evaluation, then we would have a GM. Like Butler.

VJ wants a $50 million contract with $30 million guaranteed. He’s not worth that. Every other GM in the league passed on him because of it. This puts AJ in the same league as…. every other GM in the league. Crayton was a steal at a 6th/7th round pick and makes a very reasonable $2 salary. It’s not like we mortgaged the future on that one.

Cro sealed his fate when he refused to tackle Greene in the waning moments of a contested playoff game. Yes in fact, Cason IS i indeed the answer. Picking up Bennet has very little to do w/ Cason and Cromartie – he’s a project they see something they like in.

McNeil also wants more than he is worth. His play has gone steadily downward/sideways since his pro bowl year. He’s also become a bit one dimensional (pass blocking is good but run blocking is so-so).

Way to ignore the other veteran pickup at QB. This is just AJ solidifying cheap veterans to mentor and backup his up and coming talent.

You also missed out on how AJ’s “ego” got Floyd and Merriman to sign their tenders.

When is that new penny coming out?

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Am I the only one worried?

That we’re heading for a 7-9 season! No LT, No #1WR, 31st ranked rush game last year = no chance this year. Hopefully Norv knows something we dont!

by drums7890 on Sep 8, 2010 12:31 PM PDT reply actions

EXACTLY.

31st ranked rushing attack and now we don’t have our worst best back LT. We’re f*cked!!!

Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.

Ummm, yes, you are the only one

There is a Left Tackle there protecting Rivers and blocking for Ryan Mathews, his name is Brandyn Dombrowski.

There is a #1 wide receiver, and it’s the same one we had last year, his name is Antonio Gates.

The running game was significantly upgraded in the offseason, both in the release of Tomlinson and the addition of Mathews.

It’s best you stop worrying and learn to relax and, most importantly, let the Chargers just play the games and quit over-analyzing things to death.

I worry

… but it would take and injury to PR to really make my nightmare a reality.

I think the secondary is not as good as last year and the WRs are not as good. I hope Rivera can be more aggressive with the defensive scheme and send 5 and 6 every play just like the Saints did two weeks ago.

Having watched Charger seasons for almost 40 years now, I’ve seen how quickly things can fall apart. Yes I’m worried.

Yes. I figure we win at least 8.

I'm realistic

We have some areas of concern. Why the sky is certainly intact, I’m also not going to mindlessly slurp the blue kool-aid with little gold lightning bolt-shaped ice cubes either.

This is the time of year for unbridled optimism so please have at it.

We’ll see how quickly some of the butterflies turn into worms if the wheels fall off this bus.

Same as it ever was.
