Eight Named to Chargers Practice Squad
The San Diego Chargers announced today that eight of the players cut yesterday were signed to the practice squad. They are:
- Seyi Ajirotutu
- Curtis Brinkley
- Jonathan Crompton
- Dedrick Epps
- Richard Goodman
- Jeff Hansen
- Nick Richmond
- Kion Wilson
Congrats to Richard Goodman, who seemingly beat out Jeremy Williams for a spot on this team with his excellent work on kick returns throughout the preseason. Congrats to the Chargers for getting Ajirotutu, Brinkley and Crompton, each of which are players that could factor into the future of this team and none of which were sure things to make it through waivers.

This is excellent news. Goodman over WIlliams is interesting. The thing that stuck me about Goodman is his explosiveness and drive and will to succeed
I’m impressed that you got all that from watching him. The only thing I noticed was that he was fast.

me too
Yep, glad to see brinkley got a spot. and seyi too. Hopefully they will get a shot at the 53 man roster next year, assuming of course there is a next year. I liked what I saw of both of them. Glad no one else picked them up.
Being on the practice squad means they also have a shot at being on the roster this year. I believe 3-4 guys from it last year ended up playing (Dombrowski, Andre Coleman, Darry Beckwith….I think there was another).

Holt
although I think Dombro made the team out of camp.

That's funny
I found a list yesterday that had him on it, but the official Chargers one from 2009 doesn’t. I suppose that makes you right.
Simeon Castille also eventually played with the big boys.

maybe
Yeah, not only because of possible injuries, but if the defense solidifies they may reduce the number of defensive players and add someone from the practice squad. Not sure who I’d like to see let go, but we have too many people on defense. So, whoever is at the bottom of the depth chart shouldn’t get too comfortable.
I can't imagine anyone near the bottom of the depth chart ever being comfortable
It’s a great way too get cut. Actually, no one in such a competitive field should ever be comfortable with their position.
Well, there are guys who clearly control their own destiny.
If Kris Dielman keeps showing up and doing what he’s been doing, he doesn’t really care about the guy behind him or how many guys there are at his position on the roster.

To some degree everyone controls their own destiny
My point is that everyone in the NFL should feel uncomfortable with their position.
It’s not like a university professor that has tenure (which happens to be my career goal) in which there are very few reasons you could lose your job. In the NFL as with all professional sports leagues, if you under-perform for any period of time you are rather likely to get demoted/ lose playing time/ get the axe.
No one should ever feel comfortable and they should use that as motivation to maintain a high level of performance. There might be 50 guys in the whole league that have the luxury of having their positions secured for at least the entire season secured. There are a few on the Chargers: Rivers, Gates, Dielman and maybe Jammer or Weddle. The entire D-Line, linebackers and the rest of the secondary could easily lose playing time with poor performances early.
I agree though, if the best players continue to perform at the highest level, then yes they should feel pretty good. But, for example, if Adrian Peterson fumbles 4 times in the first two games, few people would be surprised if Toby Gerhart gets more playing time.
glad to see Brinkley clear, but Latsko didn’t make the cut? but at least CW’s replacement made the practice squad. his clipboard skills must need some serious work. Charlie at least made the 53 man roster. i’m questioning this pick already. AJ’s an idiot.

Latsko has been on the practice squad since the Coryell days, I think they have finally given up on him.

Traye Simmons
tweeted he was in Atlanta for a workout.
Surprise Surprise Sgt. Carter
nobody wanted any of our young “super talented all stars”, and they made through to our practice squad.
c'mon man
you know to the rest of the league these guys are reaches. but AJ, the eagle eye for talent, see’s diamonds in the rough.

Not meant as a slap to anybody
(players, A.J. or the fans of said players). Its just that every team in the league thinks that they have found a few “hidden gem” UDFAs every year that they have to “sneak” through waivers and get onto their practice squad. When you are a fan of a team I guess it is easy to buy into the hype but the odds are that very few of these “hidden gems” around the league will every be big time contributors.
Wes Welker?
I wonder what everyone said about Wes Welker when he was on the chargers’ practice squad.
actually
he was on the active roster for a week before they cut him, not the practice squad
they cut him for room for hart
ugh

wouldve been nice
to have him with vincent jackson gone
i was being sarcastic
AJ can find talent at affordable prices. but realistically it’s a 50/50 shot at a winner, no matter who the player.

Is Epps a surprise?
Interesting that he seems to have got on there over Williams.

Chargers will almost certainly need a TE replacement at some point during the season
They are going to rely on them heavily in the offense and it’s a little foolish to think that none of them will miss some time this year. McMichael is getting up there in years and Gates has a spotty injury history. It’s a good idea to keep some depth on the roster for a position that factors to be an important part of the offense.
Not to mention they need to start grooming someone to replace Wilson and McMichael in the upcoming couple of seasons (albeit it could easily be another FA pick-up).
Maybe the Chargers could have found a better option on waivers, but we all know how much AJ loves HIS draft picks.
but we all know how much AJ loves HIS draft picks
Gartrell Johnson and Kevin Ellison would be confused by that statement.
Otherwise, you’re right on the money. The practice squad does serve as a 4th string TE, although there are some roster manipulations that need to be done. Despite Acee saying that only the best remaining players get put on the practice squad, I’m sure there is some thought about depth given to it.
Plus, if you pick someone up off waivers, then they go on your 53 man roster, which means you now have 4TEs and need to cut loose someone else. I’m not sure there were any other TEs who cleared waivers and were practice squad eligible who better than Epps.

It was meant to be a little tongue-in-cheek
Although as soon as I posted that I imagined Gartrell in a Giants jersey.
Ellison is a stretch though. If you want to get cut from the Chargers all you have to do is get yourself in a public relations mess-up involving an arrest, and preferably involving drugs.
I am still a little surprised that Merriman has been able to stick around given his knack for being in the news for legal issues; to be fair some of those were just people trying to take advantage of his position. I wonder how the Shaun Phillips issues will play out.
I can't remember the last time Gates missed a game due to injury.

wow
last game Gates missed was when AJ put him on the Roster exempt list in 2005… http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GateAn00/gamelog/
Although he was a shell of himself in 2008, but still better than most (700 yards, 8TDs)

That toe injury really screwed his year up
The one he got in the playoff game, not sure which one, but they won the game.
I think it was before the NE game, where LT, Rivers and Gates were all hurt.
Going into the next year he just wasn’t the Gates we were used to.
And in fact, Wilson hasn’t missed much time in a number of years. He wasn’t getting a lot of playing time, but still. McMichael has 3/4 of a season two seasons ago and has missed very little time in his other years, but he is past 30 and won’t be getting younger this year.
Missed a game and was injured are different things for sure
I would like to believe that if he is banged up this year, at least through the season, the team would give him some time off to fully recover.
In the past, his services were so crucial to team success that he could not really miss any games without the team suffering greatly. In those days, the Chargers didn’t have the legitimate receiving options from the TE position to compensate (and for a number of years the WRs) for his loss. This year, there is more depth in the “receiving TE position” than in years prior.
With that said, Epps won’t play a snap; he’s only there for emergency depth and future prospects.
heh
• Linebacker Kion Wilson, signed to the practice squad, took reps at fullback too. The Chargers will also have some of the defensive backs on their roster run routes as receivers in practice. Such duality is necessitated by the Chargers keeping just 21 offensive players.
