Open Thread: Chargers Roster Cuts
It appears the cuts are coming to the light little by little, so let's do this open thread style.
- Josh Reed has been released, which is not surprisingly after the trade for Patrick Crayton.
- Nathan Vasher and Jonathan Crompton, two guys that were "on the bubble", have both gotten the axe. It appears the Chargers will be going with 2 QBs this season because El Capitan is the most durable QB ever.
- From a Cam Thomas tweet this morning, it would appear both him and Brandon Lang have made the 53 man squad.
- Great stories Curtis Brinkley and Shawnbrey McNeal have been cut.
- The exciting pair of UDFA rookie WRs Jeremy Williams and Seyi Ajirotutu have been cut, but will probably land on the practice squad if nobody else picks them up.
- Unsurprisingly, defensive lineman Derrick Jones was released.

a lot. Much rather have a guy like him than a guy that can’t even hold the clipboard or grow a beard properly…silly Crompton. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if the team tried to sign Crompton back to the taxi squad

They won’t leave spots open for them. If either of them sign, someone else has 3 weeks before being cut. That was the reasoning behind the roster exempt list thing.

So two have to replace them.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
And Jeremy Williams the other?
I think they have to keep Tucker, as an experienced OLB, so long as Merriman’s status is up in the air.
Tucker's experience is crap
He can’t even move a 3rd sting OT back an inch on pass rush.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Jeremy Williams? Ryan Otterson? Dante Hughes?

We are already keeping two of those as backups in Green and Mooch
You expect a 3rd?
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
So you think they keep 9 OL?
I’m working off Wonko’s projected roster and he has the Chargers only keeping 8 OL. I could see keeping 9 if they really like one of their rookies and a good veteran is available.
If they are worried about a backup center
I think McDonald can handle that okay for a couple of weeks. No need for a veteran I don’t think.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

What about a veteran tackle?
So far, I haven’t really seen anyone cut from other teams that would fit the mold of experienced backup. Just a little concerned with the depth, especially considering Dombrowski already seems to have a few aches.
Anyone seen someone out there who might be a fit?
We could go with any veteran lineman.

For both the Chargers to pare down their roster and for a move on the VJ front to happen.
I love my team of historically talented underachievers.
From Christopher Smith...
Two undrafted rookies, linebacker Brandon Lang and tackle Ryan Otterson, made the team. Receiver Josh Reed and cornerback Nathan Vasher were the most experienced players released.
The Chargers kept six cornerbacks, including the newly-acquired Fred Bennett, whom San Diego claimed off waivers Tuesday. Bennett still has not practiced with the team but played against San Francisco in the preseason finale and made an interception. Other members at the position include Quentin Jammer, Antoine Cason, Donald Strickland, Brandon Hughes and Dante Hughes.
The team kept four backs (Ryan Mathews, Darren Sproles, Mike Tolbert and Jacob Heter) and four receivers (Malcom Floyd, Legedu Naanee, Buster Davis and Patrick Crayton). Crayton came to the Chargers via a trade with Dallas on Friday.
The rest of the roster by position includes two quarterbacks, three tight ends, eight offensive linemen, eight defensive linemen, 10 linebackers and five safeties.

Hey we (chargers fo) really liked the way you played all training camp but you were the 7th best corner on the team so see ya. Its a big enough downer to get cut, but when they keep 6 corners and your still gone that has to sting a little more.
True
He was always a long shot, kinda short for a corner. You could tell he wasn’t going to make it, I hardly noticed him on the field in the preseason. I hope some of the UDFAs catch on somewhere else.

That must be it for VJ for at least six games, that’s almost half the season. I think he priced himself out of the market. After the Marshall deal I was thinking he might get somebody to pay that. Now it looks like a mistake, he sits this season and just gets a moderate payday somewhere else, maybe next, maybe the one after that.

Charly Martin
He was a preseason favorite last year. He got cut by the Bolts and ended up on the Panthers practice squad last year. He just made the Panther’s final 53 this season.
Vaughn Martin is still with us.

you'll probably disagree but
I would have cut jacob hester and kept curtis brinkley. JMO
Really?
Hester is an ST beast and has shown significant improvement in his running game. Brinkley has proven nothing.

Hester is a much more valuable contributor than Brinkley.

Bloody Elbow // "Richard is a jewel." - Kid Nate
Is Sproles still going to return kicks and punts for you guys?
Or is Mathews? Or maybe a little bit of both?
It's just about time for us to get out there and win a MF Game!
Sproles on Kicks
And hopefully Crayton on Punts. That could also be Sproles though. Mathews will be nowhere near it.

we should have cut Otterson and kept Brinkley.
The peanut gallery has spoken!!!
Otterson is just a place-holder, right now.
I think that, in keeping him, they’re signaling that they want him on the PS.

Cuts were done earlier today.
NFL teams may begin signing players to the 8-man practice squads after 12pm ET on Sunday, September 5.
John! Good news!
Chargers have a chance to correct last year’s blunder – Gartrell Johnson is among the Giants cuts.
