Predicting the Final 53
Cuts are coming. I'm sorry if this makes anyone feel a certain kind of way, but that's the NFL. Here's one man's thoughts on how it'll turn out.
Quarterbacks (2)
Philip Rivers
Billy Volek
As soon as I heard that the Chargers would consider sending Crompton to the PS, I wondered why I hadn't thought of this myself. They can't trust Crompton to play this year, they have other good players to take up roster spots and no one is going to pick up the kid on waivers. 2 QBs. Bold move. I like it.
Runningbacks (5)
Ryan Mathews
Darren Sproles
Mike Tolbert
Jacob Hester
Curtis Brinkley
Brinkley is a solid back and he's a good story. But, I have him making the team because I think they can use him on coverage units. The rest is obvious.
Wide Receivers (5)
Malcom Floyd
Patrick Crayton
Buster Davis
Legedu Naanee
Seyi Ajirotutu
I like Jeremy Williams and it pains me to cut him, but I just don't think he's capable of being a #1 or #2 WR in the league and A.J. can find the role playing WRs pretty easily. Ajirotutu I think needs to be protected because he could be the next Malcom Floyd. Josh Reed did nothing to earn a roster spot this summer.
Tight Ends (3)
Antonio Gates
Randy McMichael
Kris Wilson
No brainer here. I know Wilson struggled, but he's still better than the other guys in camp. Maybe if some one decent hits the waiver wire they dump him, but I doubt it.
Offensive Line (8)
Brandyn Dombrowski
Kris Dielman
Nick Hardwick
Louis Vasquez
Jeromey Clary
Scott Mruczkowski
Tyronne Green
Veteran Tackle To Be Named Later
I think its obvious to many that the Chargers need a little more veteran presence here. They tried with Tra Thomas, but that didn't work out. They'll find somebody who has a least started a game in the NFL before.
Defensive Line (8)
Luis Castillo
Antonio Garay
Jacques Cesaire
Travis Johnson
Ogemdi Nwagbuo
Alfonso Boone
Vaughn Martin
Cam Thomas
The Chargers need everyone of these guys in order to have a fully functional defensive line. Trust the rotation, believe in the rotation and, if you're so inclined, pray for the rotation.
Linebackers (9)
Shawne Merriman
Stephen Cooper
Kevin Burnett
Shaun Phillips
Larry English
Brandon Siler
James Holt
Antwan Applewhite
Brandon Lang
I don't want Jyles Tucker. We don't need Jyles Tucker. I'm not sure why anyone ever thought an NFL team could use Jyles Tucker. That was harsh. Let me put it this way, I'll be disappointed if they keep him here.
Cornerbacks (5)
Quentin Jammer
Antoine Cason
Donald Strickland
Fred Bennett
Nathan Vasher
Will Vasher make this team? Better yet, who makes this team instead of Vasher? Jeremy Williams? Maybe. Jyles Tucker? I hope not. Crompton? I'd rather have Vasher or Williams. Okay then. Vasher stays.
Safeties (5)
Eric Weddle
Steve Gregory
Darrell Stuckey
Paul Oliver
C.J. Spillman
I hesitate on Spillman, but I think we'll want him for the special teams units at some point.
Kicker, Punter, Long Snapper (3)
Nate Kaeding
Mike Scifres
David Binn
Checking my work: 2 + 5 + 5 + 3 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 5 + 5 + 3 = 53
Practice Squad (8)
Jonathan Crompton
Jeremy Williams
Ryan Otterson
Nic Richmond
Kion Wilson
Mike Nixon
Traye Simmons
Brandon Hughes

I don't know about the two QB thing
I think there is risk that we could lose Crompton before we need him next year. And all it really buys us is the ability to hang onto a 5th RB who will never play and whose like could be picked up off the street at any given point in the season. I think when you look at the risk vs. reward, we need to keep Crompton.
That being said, if Rivers goes down for any length of time, we will probably need to cut Crompton and bring in a vet, but that decision can wait until that happens (if it even happens)

Volek replacement vs. Sproles replacement
I wonder how closely the team is monitoring Leinart….

who are your inactives?

LB's and OL
9 LB’s and only 8 OL? I’m not sure I agree with that one
Crompton would be scooped up on the PS
Paul Oliver is a waste
My take
3x ST: Scifres, Kaeding, Binn
3x QB: Rivers, Volek, Crompton*
6x WR: Floyd, Naanee, Crayton, Davis, Ajirotutu*, Williams*
4x RB: Mathews, Sproles, Hester, Tolbert
3x TE: Gates, McMichael, Wilson
7x OL: Dombrowski, Dielman, Hardwick, Vasquez, Clary, Mruczkowski, Green
23x Offense total
5x CB: Jammer, Cason, Strickland, Vasher, Bennet
5x S: Weddle, Gregory, Oliver, Spillman, Stuckey*
4x ILB: Burnett, Siler, Cooper, Holt*
5x OLB: Merriman, Phillips, English, Applewhite, Lang*
8x DL: Garay, Castillo, Cesaire, Johnson, Thomas, Martin*, Nwagbuo*, Boone
27x Defense total
Assuming perfect health for Week 1, inactives would be Crompton, Stucky, Holt, Williams, Tutu, OG, Martin, Lang.
Any good looking OL on the waiver wire push either Vasher or Bennet off the roster.

Mine isn't far off
A bit different. I keep Crompton. Drop Brinkley. For now, I have Richmond where you have an unnamed vet, mostly because he’s already there.
I keep 10 LB’s. Tucker, IMO, isn’t going anywhere just yet. We have to find QB pressure somewhere. I have 4 CBs since both Oliver & Gregory are capable of playing that spot in nickel or dime packages. Vasher has stunk it up. If Bennett is any good at all he beats Vasher out for that spot.
The rest is the same as mine that I posted a few days ago at my site – only change since then was Crayton > Reed.

Bolts from the Blue - Destroying your opinions with facts.
I was thinking and with Marcus Mcneill i think we have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Nick Hardwick is one of the best Centers, Kris Dielman is one of the best guards and Mcneill is a great LT. But right now we cant afford Mcneill
How's that kool-aid taste?

I think your prediction looks right on
the only thing they may do is keep the third QB and lose one DB.
It seems like Green is playing
Tackle now, if there is an injury to either Vasquez or Dielman who steps in to play guard right now?
Is it Mooch or Green, or do they need to sign a Vet Guard more than they need a Vet Tackle right now?
Mooch and Green are fine here. Even though Green has been playing OT, they love him (and Mooch) for their “versatility”.
Bolts from the Blue - Destroying your opinions with facts.
Thanks
It appears that Green has really stepped it up this season. Last year he had a hard time being on the active game day roster and this year it looks like he might be the first option if anyone on the line besides Hardwick gets hurt.
If the Chargers feel good about Green at both Tackle and Guard maybe they don’t need a Vet backup on the O-Line.
I think you’re going to be having lunch with acee

TJ Housh....according to The Sporting News
Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, San Diego Chargers and Arizona Cardinals have already made trade offers for the former Bengals wideout
that would throw things into a bit of an uproar and definitely seal Cromptons fate.

If TJ gets cut
maybe the Chargers talk to him, but I don’t see them trading for him and picking up his contract.
Ah not so fast...
I read yesterday I believe that the Hawks would be liable for the remaining amount from this years salary.
Espn.com
So if Houshmanzadeh were to sign a veteran minimum deal of $850,000, the Seahawks would be liable for the remaining $6.15 million balance.
That doesnt mean anything about remaining two though.
Chargers wouldnt touch that contract with a 10 foot pole
The guy is basically worth nothing, the Hawks might actually have to give a team picks just to take that contract. HA
IMO
according to the article
seattle pays the bilk of the 1st year salary

YES I am aware of that
However that is the case if he is cut NOT if he is traded because when you trade a player you trade his contract.
IMO
this is what it says
Schefter reports the Seahawks will be responsible for most of the money even if they trade him, per the contract’s terms

Research it
I dont expect you to believe me over schefter. I mean let’s assume Seattle would pay his salary if he was traded. Wouldnt that give him trade value? If you answer yes, then why did they release him? You think no team wants to give up a 7th for free whosyourmoma?
IMO
that was a joke bro
(except the John allways being right part!) besides, researching contracts gives me headaches

WHEN WILL THE JETS HAVE ENOUGH RECEIVERS?!?!
Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, Santonio Holmes (eventually), Brad Smith, David Clowney and Laveranues Coles could be coming back eventually
Its insane how much depth they have at that position.

Josh reed’s officially been cut. Also, I noticed the giants cut gatrell Johnson, not that we’d want him, but I remember when we all thought he was the chargers answer at running back and we were sad to let him go. Giants don’t want him either!

Great Job Wonko
I will put my perceived deviations on the official record. I agree with everything but..
I have Crompton on the roster and no Brinkley.
I have Williams and no Tutu.
And I think OG gets cut in favor of a 9th OL from waivers. Yes I think the Chargers will sign and or claim two OL during cuts. One a OT and one a center.
Other than that I agree.
John should give a get out of timeout free card to the most accurate roster
IMO
That would be a good idea.
VJ would be great for the Rams. Their OL blows monkeyballs and they have a super-expensive unproven QB who looks like a good player that can’t yet handle pressure. VJ can get the ball pretty much anywhere, so he’s always a threat. He’s also a better-than-average blocker, which really matters for a team with a good ground game.
