Chargers Depth Chart: Week 1 (with Injury Report)
We can all agree, this has been an unusually-busy lead-up to the first game of the season for the San Diego Chargers and their personnel. Players being cut, signed to the practice squad, released, re-signed, all in a matter of days.
That all said, here's the latest Chargers Depth Chart leading into this week's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Given recent history, it may be rendered obsolete by the time I hit publish, but here goes.
Chargers Injury Report
- Shawne Merriman has been limited in practice this week with an Achilles heel problem. May not play on Monday.
- Billy Volek did not participate in practice on Thursday. He has been walking around with a noticeable limp. May not be active on Monday.

I'd be stunned if Merriman plays.
Or rather, maybe I should say, I’d be stunned if he plays and is effective.

Agreed
We don’t have an official injury status yet, but should have one soon.

I guarantee Merriman won't play on Sunday
I would say he’s doubtful for Monday though.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Merriman should rest
English will do fine against KC’s scrub O-line. Unless they run draws. He’s a little to prone to over-running his lane, which I admit Merriman is very good at. I wonder if RR will show any awesome formations. Like a 2-5. Garay and Thomas down. English, Philips, Applewhite/Merriman down and Burnett and Siler roaming…. Yeah that would be awesome.

Hester at back up kick returner
I would LOVE to see that ahahahaha
Ever see him hit one guy in space?
Get him from the side and he drops like a rock. But get him from the front, and that rock is the boulder from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

They only needed to carry 8
because we are all hopeful that Vaugn (the project) Martin will begin to pan out one day. Currently it appears that he is the 5th DE on the roster.
When did Martin become an end?
Am I on drugs? I thought they were grooming (if that’s the word) him for DT. Or did that become unnecessary when Cam Thomas?
Are Marlon McCree and Antonio Cromartie the same person? Just askin'.
When was he ever not an end?
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Okay, less snarky answer
They’ve been grooming him for DE since they drafted him. Perhaps others projected him to DT and maybe before Thomas was drafted (and Nwagbuo impressed everyone) there was a thought he could someday move to the position, but that wasn’t the main plan. I’m sure if you dig around you can find some quotes from A.J. around April or May last year saying that Martin would be a DE.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Okey dokey then
It was probably my wishful thinking all along, worried as I’ve been (for years) about Jamal’s inevitable departure and the lack of a suitable replacement. Having a rare physical specimen like Williams on your roster kind of spoils you.
Are Marlon McCree and Antonio Cromartie the same person? Just askin'.
Amen to the whole "finding a suitable replacement"
Its been over half a decade since I went into a Chargers draft not hoping they’d draft a potential Jamal replacement.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Man, I hope this year is the year he "gets it."
Assuming there’s 2011 football, it’d be awesome to start Jamaican Bacon and Cam Thomas. Heck, you could field 1000 lbs in three guys; that’s like the Colts’ whole four-man SB-season DL.

There's a pretty slim chance
That we bring back Cesaire, Johnson and Boone next year. I’m not even sure if we bring back 2 out of the 3. And I wouldn’t be surprised if we bring back none of them. 2011 will be a make or break year for Martin.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Agree with all of that.
Garay maybe, too.
I think Johnson has more natural ability than the others, and has a better shot at getting a new deal, so long as he’s not too greedy.

He I would think would stand a shot at being resigned
Sometimes he looks beastly with the ability to be the first guy out of his stance. And could come on the cheap
IMO
With that depth chart
It at least appears Green with be activated for sundays game, I would hope he’s the first guy to go in if there’s an injury at OG. That way Moochie can strictly be a center
IMO
I believe in past years we have usually only had 7 active OL on game days. As I recall, Manumaleuna was always our 3rd OL if we ever got into that much trouble (which we almost did in week 1 against the Raiders). I wonder if not having Manu around means we will have 8 active OL. If we still go with 7, I’d bet Green gets to wear his sweat suit to the game.

Who are we thinking will be the inactives
I’m assuming he can’t keep both Volek and Sullivan inactive and have one of them be the “3rd QB” that can replace an injured starter.
It’d be easier if we could project what the kick coverage team would look like.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

I think at the end of last year the kick coverage unit was something like
Naanee, Osgood, Holt, Wilson, Oliver, Gregory, English, Hester, Dobbins and Tucker.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Naanee was definitely on kick coverage when i went to the game vs the Chiefs on Thanksgiving
It might have changed later.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Volek, Martin, Spillman, either Lang or Tucker...
After that, I’m not sure exactly who’s inactive.

I think we have to keep Land AND Tucker inactive
unless Merriman is inactive or we keep Holt inactive.
That still means there’s two more. I guess Hughes/Bennett and then Cam Thomas maybe?

This is probably a whole other thread
And probably also a really tired subject, but am I the only person who thinks that Merriman is about done? I mean, what if he really does get 100% healthy. Does he have any burst left? And what does “healthy” mean in his case, anyway? Did we ever see a healthy, non-juiced version of Lights Out?
Are Marlon McCree and Antonio Cromartie the same person? Just askin'.
i fully expect
8-10 sacks this year from shawne… the knee takes at least a full year yo recover from… as is, he was just a few tackles away from matching bitchard seymours stat line from last season, and, he’s only, what, 29 years old now?

this has been beaten into the ground.
let’s not talk of it for 6 weeks. By then we won’t need to speculate. Either Merriman is too injury prone to be valuable, or the 2009 SM is the SM of the future, or the 2009 SM was him recovering from injury and the 2006/7 SM is the SM of the future. Whatever way it ends up, we won’t have any more conclusive information for a month or so.
by Stephen (shaynes41) on Sep 10, 2010 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions
I would agree
Except I think Lang will be active with or without Merriman on the field. Tucker would suit up obviously if Merriman didnt, just for depth sake. Also I wouldnt be surprised to see 7 DL active. My guess at the 8 inactives are Hughes, Martin, 3rd QB, Terry, Bennett, Merriman, Stuckey, and OG. Yeah thats only 3 CBs, and leaves our 4th round safety savior in sweats; but I think that would field the best STs units
IMO
Both Martin and Nwagbuo in sweats?

I don't think he played special teams in preseason
So there’s basically zero chance he plays there in the regular season.
However, they do have DL on kick return units. I think I saw Garay or Nwagbuo as a blocker during practices. Maybe it was Cam Thomas. Can’t remember.

And Garay a bit too, always interesting to see the biggest dude on kickoff

I assume once Volek's back to normal
they’ll cut O’Sullivan and resign Crompton.

i find it interesting the giants
signed Hughes. are they still trying to get even with us for the whole PR17-eli deal?

I liked Brandon Hughes over Dante
He seemed more athletic, and more natural a cover corner, bad hands though
Really?
I thought Brandon looked anything but natural out there. Against the 49ers it seemed like he could barely stay within 3 yards of his man.
