Roster moves: Add G Cameron Stephenson from Rutgers; waived WR Ernest Smith, Baylor; and T Corey Clark has decided to retire.
Tough breaks. Obviously I was a fan of Smokey's and hope he has a successful career.
A little shocked that Corey Clark decided to retire, and wish him the best of luck.

I'm guessing
They knew it would be either ajirotutu or Williams, so they wanted the two to get more opportunities on Saturday.

still seems like a strange time to cut him
I wonder if there was something else up with Smith?

Once you know something like that
Its good to make a cut as soon as possible. It helps the player find somewhere else to catch on.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

i was thinking
that this was the year to try and stockpile WRs on the practice squad, since both VJ and Floyd could be gone in 2011. We still need bodies to run routes in training camp. Beside, if you want to “help” him, let him get some preseason game film. At this stage of camp, he is unlikely to get up to speed and make an impact anywhere else. I don’t think they were being kind, either something weird happened or he is simply not an NFL caliber player.

If it was not "something else"
as you mentioned in your earlier post, I think, as you suggested, in their opinion he is just not NFL caliber. I could see doing a favor for a vet by letting him try and catch on somewhere else. But an UDFA who has never done anything for the team or made an NFL roster, not sure he will get a ton of interest. Arena League II might be giving him a call.
Clark retired?
Didn’t see that coming.

yeah seriously
At least try to catch on somewhere else if he doesnt make the team. but maybe hes just burnt out. who knows..

My prediction:
Tutu and Williams will both be Chargers, one on the practice squad and one on the 53 man roster. Tutu is looking like the prime candidate for the practice squad due to his inconsistency but I think he has the most upside so that may get him the spot.
I’m a little worried that they won’t make it thru waivers to the practice squad. Plenty of team had their eyes on these guys after the draft and a wr poor team might want to pit them on their active roster if they don’t make it here

This is a big concern with these guys. We have to be sure we get the best options on the roster, because anyone else won’t likely make it to the PS. With Jackson out, our WR situation is no secret. Snapping up the best UDFA WR prospects makes it even more obvious that we’re looking for talent, and other teams will surely take a long look at anything we cast off.

That takes the reason prisoner?"
We've carried 6 WRs before
If you count Osgood as a WR, we can do it again.
Last year we had Jackson, Floyd, Chambers, Osgood, Naanee and Davis all on the 53 man roster.
We could do the same with Floyd, Naanee, Davis, Reed, Williams and Ajiritutu.

Good point
And maybe this time the guy could actually contribute as a WR.
