Chargers Preseason: Roster Cuts Include Beckwith, Mason, Banks
via Christopher Smith:
The #Chargers have released WR Gary Banks, ILB Darry Beckwith, G Lee Grimes and RB Marcus Mason. LB Donald Butler placed on Reserve-Injured.
GASP!
Gary Banks being released I totally get, because there's a lot of depth at WR and he's been nothing but disappointing throughout the preseason. The same could be said for Marcus Mason, and I guess now he has a chance to land on another team and get a shot to impress the coaches before they cut down to 53.
Darry Beckwith is the shocking name on this list. He is a 2nd year ILB that I thought had been playing some decent defense (albeit as part of the third-string unit), but it's his performance on Special Teams that had people like Kevin Acee predicting that Beckwith would land on the final 53-man roster.

Beckwith
Led the team in tackles too; granted it’s just preseason. I wonder if there is something we don’t know there?

What we do know
Is he hasnt been predicted to earn his mail on STs. Thats reason enough to cut a backup LB, especially one at the bottom of the pecking order
IMO
Beckwith has been getting thoroughly outplayed
by Holt, who is also a ST demon.
Sorry for Banks but he gave it his best shot. Too much youth & talent.
Mason doesn’t surprise me. We may well see the team go with just 4 RBs & try to stash McNeal on the PS.

Holt also provides some flexibility
in that he can play OLB in a pinch (and has some in this preseason)
Cutting Darry today was a surprise for me.

Bah I don't like McNeal as much as Mason
But McNeal is probably gone in the next round

I'm surprised to see Beckwith on there
Mainly because I thought he was higher on the depth chart than Nixon and Wilson.
Grimes is not surprising. I didn’t see him play last week at the end of the game. The Chargers will need 2 OG to finish off the game this week and expect them to be the same as last week (Hansen and Stephenson) and I expect them both to be cut afterwards.
Banks is the victim of a numbers game. He was going to get cut at some point. And he wasn’t impressing.
Mason is interesting because, as John and I talked about on twitter, they would seem to want to split the final preseason carries between 3 RBs. Brinkley and McNeal will get the bulk of the load. Will Tolbert, Hester, Sproles or Mathews gets some time or will those 3 just have to tough it out?
I also don’t know why they cut 4, when they only needed to cut 3. Unless I’m crazy. I took the roster from Chargers.com and pasted each player in as a row in Excel. Then I deleted the rows for Butler, Mason, Beckwith, Banks and Grimes. I get 74 rows. That means 74 instead of 75 on the roster in my world. Interesting.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

I think Tolbert will get his share of carries
He didn’t do much against NO & he needs the work if they’re going use him as Mathews’ backup.
Tolbert has been battling some injuries
If he’s healthy then they may want to get him some work. Otherwise, they may want to continue to rest him.

You missed where they claimed a guy on waivers.

I heard Cooper say Nixon was having a great camp
Perhaps he moved past Beckwith? Nixon is older (28) so I’m a little skeptical.
I think Wilson is practice squad material. So, I it sounds like we’re going with 4 ILBs…

It's all about STs
If you are a scrub LB you should have that tattooed on your forehead, so you can read it every morning

in addition to providing ST value
they must also provide some developmental upside. The last 10-13 players on your roster have to have the potential to be developed into something beyond a backup position player and special teams contributor (guys like Osgood are the rare exception).
I thought Beckwith was developing nicely. So either I’m wrong and the coaches thought he had topped out, or he couldn’t/wouldn’t contribute on special teams enough. Too bad, I liked him from the moment we picked him up after the 2009 draft.

Developmental upside is all well and good
But if you are undrafted and play a position like WR, RB, LB, or DB, you better play some STs well. Otherwise the coaches might not be able to keep you around to see how you are developing. You cant develop on the couch playing maddden.
IMO
definitely
but a guy like Josh Reed won’t be kept around just because he is good at covering kick offs. Whereas a guy like Goodman might be kept around just because he is good at covering kick offs, with the idea that Goodman might develop into a decent player in year 2 or 3.

Yep agreed
I thought we were talking about young bodies though. It was my point that young players, undrafted or scrub type draft picks may never get a chance to shine if they do not impress on STs. I bet if you looked around the league something like 90% of the undrafted players that made it, started as “wow well we know that guy can cover a kick, maybe we should make a spot for him”
IMO
ILB depth seems a little thin, especially if there is an injury to Burnett and Cooper
They might be shying away from too many project guys instead looking for a guy who is more ready to jump right into the action if needed. Nixon has been good on ST this camp as well.

Maybe Beckwith got in trouble
while he was back home in Louisiana?? He sure did seem like he was a keeper.
I was surprised they cut 4 guys and IR’d Butler because I thought that was 1 too many. Then I read this….
The Chargers also signed punter Glenn Pakulak, who played in 10 games with the New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins during the 2008 and ’09 seasons. Pakulak punted in two games for Washington in 2009.
Pakulak, who has averaged 44.4 yards per punt during his brief NFL career, earned the Mosi Tatupu Award given to the nation’s best special teams player as a senior at the University of Kentucky. He averaged 45.6 yards per punt and ranked third in the nation during the 2002 season.
So I guess Scifres has the night off in San Fran.

Interesting
And the kept Novak too. So, I guess unlike the last couple of years, Kaeding and Scifres will not play the entire final preseason game (if at all).

I guess that also says what they thought of Cort Johnson.

Pretty sure
He got injured trying to tackle somebody at Dallas.

these guys are camp bodies anyways. Get some game film in the can, try again next year.

I understand
I just meant that if they needed a backup punter for the final game that they would have kept their first one if they still liked him. But, obviously an injury would guarantee him being removed and replaced.

True
It’s not like he was taking Scifres job; I was hoping he might catch on with somebody else. I pretty much root for all these guys…

Cut or not, I’m fairly certain Beckwith will still make the practice squad.
I love my team of historically talented underachievers.

The Chargers probably didnt think so
They probably doubted he would make it through waivers, so they decided to let him go now
Cutting Mason does set up a clear battle between McNeal and Brinkley
Both are good stories if they make the team and I’ll feel a little sad for whoever doesn’t. Emotional week for both.

Has anyone else heard about starters playing on Thursday? From the press conferences it seemed like they might actually play guys like Rivers and Mathews at least a little. Seems crazy to me.

Except for certain starters
Rivers and Gates didn’t start either of the last two final preseason games.
The same could be said Vincent Jackson, Jamal Williams, Chris Chambers and LaDanian Tomlinson. That says something about other key players not starting.
Jammer didn’t start last year (that might have been injury related).

Brandon Lang?
Any shot he makes the team instead?
He has an outside shot
A couple more beastly STs plays, and the Chargers might have to carry 10 LBs
IMO
Applewhite is looking a bit slower this season
He got the size last year, this year it seems like his foot speed has dropped off. Maybe the middle is where he ends up if we get some injuries.
