53 Man Roster Projection
QB: 2 Spots
Note: I see Crompton landing on the practice squad.
RB: 2 Spots
Note: None of the three (Mcneal, Brinkley or Mason) have showed enough to make the team. With Tolberts, and Hesters to a lesser extent, versatility the Chargers could opt to only carrie two true running backs.
FB: 2 Spots
WR: 5 Spots
-Malcom Floyd
-Buster Davis
-Seyi Ajirotutu
Note: Reed hasn't shown enough and I see the Chargers going with youth. If they opt to keep Reed I see Seyi making the team and Williams going to the practice squad.
TE: 3 spots
OL: 7 Spots
-Brandon Dombrowski
-Scott Mruczkowski
Note: I could see the Chargers adding somebody else to the O-line.
CB: 5 Spots
Noe: Wouldn't be shocked if Vasher or Simmons don''t make the team.
Safety: 5 Spots
Note: Spillmans hitting and special teams prowess and hitting help him make the team.
ILB: 5 Spots
OLB: 6 Spots
-Shawne Merriman (ugh)
-Shaun Philips
DL: 8 Spots
-Jacques Cesaire
-Ogemdi Nwagbuo
ST: 3 Spots
Let me know what you think or if I missed somebody.

I'd give Goodman the edge over Williams right now
He had some good returns. I think Reed is the odd man out. Naanee has done really well in the slot.
I think 8 DL spots is one too many, just don’t know which position gets that extra spot. Maybe that last spot goes to a guy on the waiver wire.
yeah i was thinking the final spot is finally somebody not on the team
but you cant really project that. good points

On talent makes sense but roster distribution is way off
Just 21 offensive players, that just not enough, any typical NFL team will have 24-26 offensive players.
One more RB (Brinkley), 2 more O-Lineman (Richmond, Stephenson/any other scrub) or Crompton makes the roster.
One less corner (Vasher or Simmons), One less OLB (Tucker), One less DLineman (Nwagbuo or Travis Johnson).
yeah fair enough
i couldnt really figure out the last couple spots because i didnt know whether to go talent or just the way it depth at certain positions. i chose talent but good point

I have
3x ST: Scifres, Kaeding, Binn
3x QB: Rivers, Volek, Crompton
5x WR: Floyd, Naanee, Davis, Ajirotutu, Williams
4x RB: Mathews, Sproles, Hester, Tolbert
3x TE: Gates, McMichael, Wilson
8x OL: Dombrowski, Dielman, Hardwick, Vasquez, Clary, Mruczkowski, Green, somebody
23x Offense total
4x CB: Jammer, Cason, Vasher, Strickland
5x S: Weddle, Gregory, Oliver, Spillman, Stuckey
4x ILB: Burnett, Siler, Cooper, (Holt or Beckwith)
5x OLB: Merriman, Phillips, English, Applewhite (Tucker or Lang)
7x DL: Garay, Castillo, Cesaire, Boone, Johnson, Thomas, Martin
25x Defense total
Plus two from the following, up to one per position, in descending order of likelihood:
WR: Goodman
DL: Nwagbuo
LB: Holt, Beckwith, Tucker or Lang
RB: Brinkley
DB: Simmons
My guess is two of the first three.

Early inactives
Crompton, Williams, OL #8, Stuckey, Tucker/Lang, Martin, and the two guys from the bottom list unless Goodman is picked up. If Goodman, then perhaps Holt/Beckwith will be inactive.

Excellent breakdown
Out of the 4 LBs you list as being on the bubble, I think at least 3 out of the 4 make the team – and maybe all 4 do. If they’re seriously considering keeping Goodman on the roster, then look for him to be returning kicks in SF this week. Also, I think Brandon Hughes would make the roster over Simmons if they decided to keep another CB.
Totally forgot Hughes.
Yeah, BHughes over Simmons.

I don't know that it's that clear cut
From my perspective, the Hughes brothers and Simmons are all in the same boat, young guys with upside who we hope won’t actually play, but might need to be protected on the 53 man.
I think D Hughes is the least likely to make it to the practice squad, while the other two might make it there. We need to somehow hang onto at least one of these young CBs to be our “developmental” CB for when we eventually move Jammer to the position he was born to play… At this time, I think Vasher gets squeezed and we hang onto one of the Hughes brothers on the 53 man and hope to squeak Simmons onto the PS.
( there is a reasonable chance that Vasher might still be available mid-season if we need him due to an injury to someone else)

here is my list (before yesterday I had Beckwith making the team as well)
3x ST: Scifres, Kaeding, Binn
3x QB: Rivers, Volek, Crompton
5x WR: Floyd, Naanee, Davis, Ajirotutu, Williams
4x RB: Mathews, Sproles, Hester, Tolbert

7x OL: Dombrowski, Dielman, Hardwick, Vasquez, Clary, Mruczkowski, Green

5x S: Weddle, Gregory, Oliver, Spillman, Stuckey
4x ILB: Burnett, Siler, Cooper, Holt
6x OLB: Merriman, Phillips, English, Applewhite, Tucker*, Lang
8x DL: Garay, Castillo, Cesaire, Johnson, Thomas, Martin, Nwagbuo, Boone

.* BHughes and then Tucker are the first to go if some enticing OL help appears on the waiver wire.
Week 1 inactives would be Crompton, Holt, Williams, OG, Martin, Lang, Tucker, and BHughes (Merriman may end up swapped with Tucker due to injury)

thats a lot of Defense and not a lot of offense. Why 10 cbs and 8 DLs?
by not humble enough on Sep 2, 2010 8:24 AM PDT up reply actions
I think the only place on the offense we really need another player is on the offensive line, and I don’t think there is anyone on the roster today who we would be comfortable with playing in a meaningful game. So I think the Saturday at 4PM 53 man roster will be defense heavy. However, I think when other teams make their cuts to get down to 53 men, there are going to be some quality tackles cut loose that we will add, and I think our 5CB (BHughes or maybe that new guy we just got) will be waived to make room and that will even things up a bit.
In general there is also a tilt towards the defense because there are more young guys with future upside on defense who we need to protect on the 53 man roster than there are on the offensive side. These are guys who would undoubtably be snapped up off the waiver wire and would not make it to our practice squad. Guys like Lang and Martin (and even Stuckey at this point) are guys you need to protect by keeping them on your 53 man roster but you don’t actually want to play them in a game at their position, so their position group numbers get inflated since you still need to keep other guys who can actually play the position in a game.

For historical note 53 man roster truth v projection
Final roster (where I got it wrong)

2x QB: Rivers, Volek (3x w/ Crompton)
4x WR: Floyd, Naanee, Davis, Crayton (5x w/ Ajirotutu & Williams)

3x TE: Gates, McMichael, Wilson (3x w/ Epps
8x OL: Dombrowski, Dielman, Hardwick, Vasquez, Clary, Mruczkowski, Green, Otterson (8x I didn’t have Otterson, I had someone else)
21x Offense total (24 total Offense)
6x CB: Jammer, Cason, Strickland, D. Hughes, B. Hughes, Bennett (3x w/o Hughes, Hughes, Bennett)
5x S: Weddle, Gregory, Oliver, Spillman, Stuckey

8x DL: Garay, Castillo, Cesaire, Johnson, Thomas, Martin, Nwagbuo, Boone (7x w/o Boone)
29x Defense total (26x Defense)
So I was off by a 8 guys. Considering the amount of coverage the team gets and the roster make-up I’d say I stunk a big one. Good thing I do this for fun

I haven't seen any of the pre-season games.
Has Epps got into any of the games? His optimistic scenario was practice squad from the beginning. Just wanted to know what he has shown, if anything.
Dedrick who?
At the very best, they’re holding him out so he doesn’t get a chance to shine too brightly to make the PS. They’re going to be so reliant on 2-3TE sets that I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case. Otherwise, he’s a goner.

We will have 3 QB's.
Crompton is not going anywhere. Voleks contract is up after this year and I don’t see the Chargers chancing him making it to the practice squad.
by remmrtn on Aug 29, 2010 9:27 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
just dont think he has proved anything.
When Volek is gone I doubt they rely on Crompton as a back up. He could make the team, but i would think the chargers mights consider his spot for someone more valuable.
Life is like riding a bicycle, to keep your balance, you must keep moving.-Einstein
Cromption hasn't proved anything yet
but they only had the three in this camp, and having 3 is pretty much the norm. Maybe a year of developement will help him.

Of course he hasn't proved anything.
He’s a ROOKIE.

thanks i had no idea he was a rookie
just think that if they feel they can store him on the practice squad then they will. im not saying its going to happen but it wouldnt surprise me if they wanted that spot for somebody more valuable.

I'm guessing they would not want to risk waiver wire for Cromption
He may not suit up on Sunday, but I expect he will consume one of the 53 spots.

2 QBs
the chargers had two QBs back in the Schottenheimer days. The colts also ran with 2 QBs for a good while, with Manning and Sorgi and a bit of luck.
It is pretty rare and I agree that we’ll have three, especially due to Volek’s contract expiring, as you said.

Acee's projection
from the SF game advance video on the U-T website
2 QB
2 RB
2 FB
3 TE
8 OL (picking up a vet tackle off the waiver wire to make 8)
5 WR (thinks Tutu stays and leaning toward Reed over Williams)
8 DL
4 ILB (Lang makes it)
6 OLB
5 CB (Fred Bennett was just picked up & stays; thinks Vasher does too)
5 Safeties
3 Special teamers
I just watched that as well!
I’m not sure I’m buying into the 2QB thing. There is a decent chance someone grabs Crompton if we waive him. With Volek’s contract up after this year, I think we need a #2 QB of the future.
Acee mentioned that if PR got hurt and was out for a few+ weeks, we would pick up a vet QB anyways to back up Volek, but I think we wait until if/when that happens to make that decision about Crompton. I think once KC rolls around we will probably have 3QBs, 8OLs, and 4 CBs, but that is dependent on us finding a viable tackle on the waiver wire.

The two numbers are the number of players at each position on the 53-man roster, then my expectations for the 45-man active gameday roster.
QB 2 2
17 PHILIP RIVERS
7 Billy Volek
RB 5 4
24 RYAN MATHEWS
43 Darren Sproles
35 Mike Tolbert
22 JACOB HESTER
44 Curtis Brinkley
WR 5 5
80 MALCOM FLOYD
11 LEGEDU NAANEE
84 Buster Davis
86 Jeremy Williams
89 Seyi Ajirotutu
TE 3 3
85 ANTONIO GATES
88 Kris Wilson
81 Randy McMichael
OT 4 3
62 BRANDYN DOMBROWSKI
66 JEROMEY CLARY
69 Tyronne Green
79 Nick Richmond
OG 2 2 (Green and Mrucz wil back up the guards)
68 KRIS DIELMAN
65 LOUIS VASQUEZ
C 2 2
61 NICK HARDWICK
63 Scott Mruczkowski
DE 5 4
74 JACQUES CESAIRE
93 LUIS CASTILLO
70 Alfonso Boone
92 Vaughn Martin
96 Travis Johnson
DT 3 3
71 ANTONIO GARAY
76 Cam Thomas
91 Ogemdi Nwagbuo
OLB 6 5
95 SHAUN PHILLIPS
56 SHAWNE MERRIMAN
52 Larry English
90 Antwan Applewhite
94 Jyles Tucker
57 Brandon Lang
ILB 4 4
54 STEPHEN COOPER
99 KEVIN BURNETT
59 Brandon Siler
53 James Holt
CB 5 5
23 QUENTIN JAMMER
20 ANTOINE CASON
31 Nathan Vasher
Fred Bennett
30 Donald Strickland
S 4 4
32 ERIC WEDDLE
28 STEVE GREGORY
27 Paul Oliver
25 Darrell Stuckey
ST 3 3
5 MIKE SCIFRES
10 NATE KAEDING
50 DAVID BINN
My expected practice squad is (although I expect a couple to get claimed and us to claim some others)
Practice Squad
QB 8 Jonathan Crompton
RB 40 Shawnbrey McNeal
TE 87 Dedrick Epps
OG 67 Ryan Otterson
ILB 42 Kion Wilson
DE 77 Derrick Jones
CB 37 Traye Simmons
FS 41 C.J. Spillman
I know many people around here love Spillman for his hits
But I think he is more of a liability than a boon (he nearly took out Gregory in the Dallas game, I think). He has an outside shot at special teams but is not going to see time as a safety. Likely waived and picked up by someone else.
I am looking for use to grab depth at OG and ILB over the waiver wire.
you need another 4 inactives
I have selected Bennett, Brinkley, Martin, and Williams for you. If you already had Martin inactive, then I would select one of the OLBs. I think once/if we decide Merriman is healthy that Tucker will get the heave-ho.
by Stephen (shaynes41) on Sep 3, 2010 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions
I thought I had 8, must have lost some when I was looking in excel
Inactives for me: 1 RB, 1CB, 1 OL, 1-2 DL, 2 OLB and another DB or WR, whatever the matchup’s dictate that week.
As for players:
Brinkley
Strickland
Richmond
Martin mainly with Boone and Johnson also missing some games
Tucker and Lang (assuming Tucker is still there and Merriman is good to go)
Then either Williams or a DB like Oliver or Bennett (assuming no other moves, which is a bad assumption anyways)

I don't think we can do 2x QB
This preseason has not assured us that Volek still has it. God forbid anything should happen to Rivers, but if it does, I think Volektric Billy had best have some competition, even if it’s from a rookie.
