English tears it up, or ...
It's just a practice, but ...
Oh no.
Philip Rivers -- one of the most competitive people I've ever known -- might have stayed down at some point if this morning had been a game.
Larry English repeatedly sped past Brandyn Dombrowski and had to hold up to not take down Rivers. And not just in one series.
English, the Chargers' first-round pick in 2009, looked as good as he ever has. And maybe, just maybe, he would have had that much success against Marcus McNeill.

Not to discredit English
but this is probably more of a reflection on Dombrowski than it is on English’s improvement. Sure he is probably better than last year, but the appearance of how he looked was enhanced by the lack of experience that Dombrowski has at LT.
by Christopher Hernandez on Aug 2, 2010 1:14 PM PDT reply actions
I say the opposite
I say English’s success is a direct sign that he’s improved and was beating a solid LT in Dombrowski and not many LTs could have done better. And I refuse to hear any argument to the contrary. La La La La…..
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Yeah, an KA said that in a lot of the times he passed Dombrowski, MM would have been beat to. So English is improving.

That's not quite what he said.
But, I will choose to believe your reference to something that someone said that wasn’t really what they said.

its nice to see that our 2010 pro bowl OLB is beating our 2010 pro bowl LT in a very competitive camp. I see no reason not to let our baseless enthusiasm run rampant.

The only problem with that statement
Is that Pro Bowl OL are based on reputation and Dombrowski doesn’t have that yet. That is all. No other problems.

Whats up with the new "happy" Wonko?
It looks like you have gone from being the leader of the anti English movement to the driver of the English Bandwagon.
I am going to miss the old Wonko, can’t you at least reply and call me a dumb ass or stupid fool?
You get me.

So if Ryan Matthews runs around our DL, we’re worried about our D.
And if Larry English runs past our OL, we’re worried about our O?
Can’t please them all I guess…..
Go Bolts!

Almost every year at Purdue practices
I recall reading about the quarterbacks throwing all these interceptions and completions. And either we’d get stoked about the D or worry about the QBs. And almost every year the QBs were great and the defense wasn’t.

No, Marcus is smiling now ...
All the way to his Wealth Management Advisor’s office in LJ.
I can't tell
If this is a sarcasm-based jab against A.J. because of the McNeil’s holdout.
or
A remark about how A.J. will feel vindicated on English.

Thing about English, even last year you could see he had good physical skills.
He has really good speed and you saw him in the backfield near the quarterback pretty often. Unfortunately, he was always a step too late and often overpursued too far out to get to the quarterback.
English should be good, but he really needs to learn to either cut in, get a spin move… something to help him eliminate that second too late he seemed to always find himself with last year. Hopefully he’s learned and worked on things in the offseason.
I love my team of historically talented underachievers.

Ya, so true.
English seemed like a one trick pony. Speed but no power or creativity. He got pushed out to this wide arch that left him a second late. Merriman (on ‘roids) could run around or through and had a wicked spin move so the Tackle didn’t know where he was going, couldn’t jump bump him to the outside.
Agreed.
You could see the potential last season. Let’s hope he can put it together this year.

So how much fast does English look this year compared to last years camp?

Not sure his speed was the problem.
I think it had more to do with his technique.

Yeah I dunno
This kind of scares me.
"I sawed a woman in the park today"
Not bad grammar. Just recollections of a deranged killer.
Last season it looked like English was just a step or two away from getting the sack or making the play on a consistent basis. It would be huge for us if English has gotten faster and plays great this season. If he plays well in the season (as opposed to pulling a Kevin Burnett), we will forget about Shawne Merriman in no time.

I just was reading Acee's article on this practice
And apparently this part of the practice wasn’t even with pads on. To me that changes everything. You’re a much smaller target as a DE/OLB when you don’t have your pads on. I’m not saying this as an excuse, but I now my first reaction when I heard this was, “Oh, no wonder!”.

FWIW, I think Dombrowski will be good enough most of the time.
