Defensive Line: Who will stay and who will go
The undisputed toughest battle this training camp has been between the defensive line. There are 10 men to fill 7 spots. What I will attempt to do is go through each player and give my opinion on who will or will not make the team. Let me know if you agree/disagree.
Lets get the locks out of the way:
-Luis Castillo. Like him or not he is the most consistent member of the D-Line and although he has had his fair share of injuries, he isn't going anywhere. Chances of making the team: All but guaranteed
-Cam Thomas. The Chargers aren't going to release a 5th round pick who has shown a ton of potential in just his first season, something major and/or unexpected would have to happen for him not to make the team. Chances of making the team: Almost 100%
Now I'll list the men who will most likely make the team:
-Antonio Garay. Has a ton of potential but has had a lot of injuries in his career, has looked like a beast so far and will most likely be the opening day starter at DT. Chances of making the team: Only will be cut if he gets severely injured
-Vaughn Martin. Still raw but the team believes he has all the tools and the work ethic to be special down the line. Chances of making the team: Will only get cut if the team loses faith in him
Players on the Bubble:
-Jacques Cesaire. Scrappy player who is better as a role player than as a starter but can play all over the line and is currently listed as a starter, although I along with others think Boone would be better suited opposite Castillo. Chances of making the team: Likely, but I wouldn't be shocked if the team choose to move on with younger players.
-Alfonso Boone. When he first joined the team he didn't look like anything special but as the season moved on he picked up the system and he showed why the Chargers picked him up. Led the D-Line in sacks last year and is an all around solid player. Chances of making the team: I would be surprised if he were to be cut, hes a good football player.
-Travis Johnson. Was a solid player last year but has never really lived up to his potential as a first round pick. Chances of making the team: about 50-50
-Ogemdi Nwagbuo. What a fun name to say. Nwagbuo isn't quite the space eater the Chargers covet but he plays with good pad level and has a nice pass rush for a DE/DT. Chances of making the team: about 50-50, it's either him or Johnson
Players with an uphill battle:
-Ryon Bingham. Missed last year but is a tough and versatile player. He's a good guy but I just think the numbers are against him. Really hope he can catch on somewhere else. Chances of making the team: Unlikely, only if there are some major injuries in front of him.
-Derrick Jones. Honestly I don't know that much about him, his best bet is to make the practice squad. Chances of making the team: Will make the practice Squad if he's lucky.
In the end I believe Bingham, Jones and Johnson will not make the team.

Not bad..
but I think Cesaire won’t make the cut. Cesaire would play end opposite Castillo and I think they will go with youth there as the upside of Jacque is already here.
I think Travis will get the call, with Boone & Martin the backups
A surprise possibly
And I would argue more likely than Martin getting cut. The three on the outside looking in I still think are Jones, OG, and Bingham.
IMO
I think TJ's here this year.
Cesaire, maybe, maybe not. I think Bingham gets cut because if he does, he’ll still be around when someone gets hurt, à la Ian Scott. Cesaire will immediately get a new deal somewhere. Jones probably has no chance; he’s playing for a PS spot. I think Boone is safe, Martin is not, and Johnson has more ability/upside than either.

Odds
7 D-linemen, plus a chance that one of these guys gets hurt, and a chance that they run 8. So let’s on average say 7.5 players will either be on the final 53 or will be IR.
Guys competing against themselves or the injury bug: Castillo, Thomas, Garay, Martin. That’s four, barring injury.
That leaves Cesaire, Boone, Johnson, Nwagbuo, Bingham, Jones. Six guys battling for 3.5 spots. So there will be 2.5 cuts, or .417 cuts per player.
Less than 42% to be cut: Cesaire, Boone, Johnson, Nwagbuo.
More than 42% to be cut: Bingham, Jones.
Let’s say that there’s a 10% chance that Bingham or Jones makes the roster. That means there are 0.6 cuts left to make, among four players. That means each of them has an average 85% chance to make the roster or go IR.

Not really a chance they use 8 though
There’s more precedence for a 34 team actually carrying 6 DL. This myth that the team could 8 DL although true that it could happen, it’s a giant long shot and IMHO shouldnt even be considered. I mean where is that extra roster going to come from? If someone wants to propose 8 DL let them rationalize which position group gets trimmed
IMO
Yeah, okay.
53 men.
Robopunter, Kaeding, Binn. 3x ST.
Subtotal: 50 men.
3x QB, 8x OL, 3x RB, 2x FB, 3x TE, 5x WR. 24x Offense.
Subtotal: 26 men.
8x DL, 9x LB, 9x DB. 26x Defense.

Okay.
Like I said, it doesn’t change my math much.

That could work
But I would much rather have an extra LB in that case like Lang, or better yet carry 9 OL. You love math figure out how many DL the Chargers actually use if they play nickel or dime 50% of the time and only use two true DL in nickel and dime. I get 2.5 DL per play, and you want to carry more than 3 times that. No position group has 3X plus depth, not a single one.
IMO
Good point
I do think you need more DL depth-as-redundancy than you do in most positions, because DL take the worst beating. But sure, I was figuring that 7 was the most likely number.

or better yet carry 9 OL.
Uh… which nine? We don’t have nine.
Dombrowski, Dielman, Hardwick, Vasquez, Clary, plus…
Greene, Mruczkowski, and…
Richmond? Really?
That’s stretching it to get eight.

Need to draft at least two next year.
Have to draft an OT and a Center, and maybe another OL type, or have a UDFA competition.

Not sure
Could always go with a waiver wire body, try get one in a VJack trade, or finally decide to pay Big Mac
IMO
Yeah.
Still, even with one more player, that leaves us with 8x NFL-caliber, and one guy who can make the PS.

And Big Mac will only get paid if Clary or Dombo gets hurt.

They picked up a guy who couldn't make the Bucs' roster.
I know, change of scenery, and all. But somehow I don’t think that move will put us at 9 good-enough linemen.

Besides...
What are the odds that one of our DL candidates will get hurt in the next 3 weeks? Subtract that from 0.5, and that’s the extra share of a cut that gets distributed.

why not 8? we're a "hybrid" 34 team.
The peanut gallery has spoken!!!
Vaughn Martin still looks lost
I really hope he looks better this week. I’m not sure where the coaches expect him to be developmentally, but I thought he would be farther along. I figured he would be pushing Jacques, or at worst in the DE rotation, but right now he still looks like he’ll be inactive week to week if he makes the team…
He might be a surprise cut.

Yeah. Well, he's got a steep hill to climb.
I strongly suspect he has one more year.

Still extremely baffling to me how Boone was cut by the Chiefs
The guy is the ageless wonder, a decent pass rusher, and a big time leader. You can tell in the first presseaon game how guys look to him after making plays for approval.
IMO
If they cut OG
OG could probably clear waivers, and I think he has two more year of practice squad eligibility. So strategically they could potentially hang on to him. Maybe a 50/50 tag on him.
I could see Boone on the bubble due to his age, but he has played well. I’d put that 50/50 tag on him too.
