Chargers Offensive Line Analysis (Preseason Game 1 vs Bears)

2010 Offensive Line Analysis and Grading

Chargers Pre-Season Week 1

Opponent:  Chicago Bears

Date:  August 14, 2010

Drive 1

1.  1-10; -22

Blue Pro Lt.

60 Pro

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Solid all around, Domb falls down but secures block.  Dielman gets donkey punched.

2.  2-5; -27

31 Gun Rt.

50 Pro

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Domb gets happy feet and pushed into Rivers.  Good otherwise.  Clary does well.

3.  3-5; -27

31 Gun Rt.

60 Pro

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-1; RT-1

Vasquez can’t get off the 3 and the 7 loops untouched.  Nice RB pickup on LB.

Drive 2

4.  1-10; 46

Texas Lt. H-Flanker

23 Iso

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Hester can’t stay on the Sam, otherwise 4-5 yards.  Hardwick and Vasquez have a nice combo block.

5.  2-7; 43

Pro Rt. Twins Lt. SB (RB is only at 5 yards)

60 Pro

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Domb gives up inside late, but there are two cut blocks (Diel, Clary) so the play must be designed quick pro.

6.  2-17; -47

13 Gun Lt.

HB Screen Lt.

LT-2; LG-2; C-0; RG-1.5; RT-2

Left side does well, Domb with his invite and Dielman with everything.  Hardwick can’t get Urlacher, and his GMP (guy makes play).  Vasquez doesn fairly well, but gets a messy release and can’t get turn back protection.

7.  3-10; 46

22 Gun Lt.

61 Pro

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-1

Vasquez does very well.  Clary gets his block but gives up inside pressure towards the end and with it late pressure on Rivers.

8.  1-20; 34

22 Gun Rt.

20 Draw

LT-2; LG-1; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Domb donkey slaps the garbage out of his guy.  Dielman can’t seal his guy and also can not lock on.  Vasquez and Clary block this perfectly.  Legs has a tough block and can’t get it, if he does…well just watch the play and see ;)

9.  2-14; 28

22 Gun Lt.

50 Pro

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Awesome protection from everyone.  Few NFL teams run 50 protection as often as we do.  It is tough to cover five receivers.

Drive 3

Domb is out, Green in at LT

10.  1-10; -8

Pro Rt.

26 Power

LT-2; LG-0; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

We have to grade Dielman a zero on this.  However, watch the film (it never lies ;) ).  Volek is slow to get out and Dielman trips over his foot.  This is ON THE QB!  Watch Dielman give Volek a "wth!?!" after the play.  Watch the double from Clary and Vasquez.  A thing of beauty.  They double down on the three.  Urlacher shoots A gap.  Vasquez comes off the double and picks him up.  Clary proceeds to crush the 3.  Textbook.

11.  2-14; -4

Pro Wing Rt.

26 Power

LT-2; LG-0; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Again, Dielman gets a zero.  Again, it’s on the backfield.  TDEK runs right up his keester.  If he allows Dielman to either kick or seal Suggs, who knows how many yards would have been gained.  Hardwick seals beautifully and Vasquez/Clary abuse the 3 and #54…again!

12.  1-10; -22

Pro Lt.

22 Iso

LT-1; LG-2; C-1.5; RG-2; RT-2

OK, first some Iso tutorial.  On our Iso, we man playside and lead with the FB…duh.  However, we zone the backside.  Not what you ran in HS probably ;).  So when I refer to "zone" in the Iso plays, I’m talking about the backside.  On this one, Green zones with Wilson on the backside.  Wilson takes over but Green gets lost.  He needs to release to the safety (#46), but kind of wanders and ends up floating back to initial block.  Dielman does a very nice job zoning with Hardwick.  Hardwick can’t seal completely but still does well.  Right side does very well.  Hester does not do well.

13.  2-10; -22

Pro Rt. Twins Lt. SB Y-Flanker

HB Screen Rt.

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-1.5; RT-2

Hardwick does very well.  Vasquez again gets caught in the wash and has a slow release.  Good play by Bear defender.

14.  3-10; -22

22 Gun Rt.

20 Draw

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

OK, watch the left side.  They have FOUR defenders, with only three blockers.  What to do?  Green (either through his own IQ or Harwick/Dielman’s help) knows to release end man and pick up the LB.  Dielman and Hardwick are able to get the 2i and the LB.  Right side both wash beautifully.  If Wilson and Banks get their blocks we convert here.

Drive 4

15. 1-10; -44

Pro Wing Rt. Y-Up

28 Toss

LT-1.5; LG-1; C-1; RG-1.5; RT-2

Green cuts off and rides but doesn’t secure.  Dielman can’t stay with and his GMP (watch his guy, he makes a pretty impressive play).  Hardwick leaves Dielman with a pull overtake but can’t get the Mike.  Vasquez gives quite a bit of ground but secures his block.  Clary pulls and crushes his DB.  McMichael has a pin (down) block and does it well.  Wilson as a FB leads….meh.

16.  2-2; 48

???

27 Power?

?????

DARN YOU BEARS BROADCAST!  If someone has this play, go ahead and get it done for me ;)

17.  1-10; 44

Pro Wing Lt. Strong Y-Up

723 PA Pro

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Good from Green.  The right side has a stunt and they pick it up nicely.

18.  2-10; 44

Ace Double Flanker Tight

29 Toss

LT-2; LG-1; C-2; RG-1; RT-2

Neither guard is able to get their LB (outside zone from Dielman back).  Dielman’s GMP.  Hardwick and Clary both have nice pull/overtakes.

19.  3-1; 35

Texas Rt. H-Flanker

32 Wedge

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Nice job by Green.  Dielman and Hardwick have a nice double team to the Mike.  Dielman needs to get his head across though, imo.  Watch Vasquez.  He’s a tad high, but he DRIVES his guy!

20.  1-10; 33

Ace Double Flanker Tight

829 Naked

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Easy assignments, but still very nice all around.

21.  2-10; 33

22 Gun Rt.

21 Draw

LT-2; LG-1.5; C-0; RG-2; RT-2

Dielman does well, but can’t move his guy.  Hardwick is too slow and can’t get the Mike.  TDEK has to bounce into the sealed DBs.

22.  3-11; 34

22 Gun Lt.

61 Pro

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Easy $.

23.  4-1; 24

Pro Wing Rt. Strong

26 Power

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Dielman reads this beautifully and seals the LB.  If TDEK is a little more patient and follows Dielman, it’s house.  The Y and Wing both do well.

24.  1-10; 21

Ace Tight Y-Flanker

29 Toss

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-1; RT-2

Green’s got wheels!  Dielman does very well to secure the LB.  Vasquez can’t get his LB and his GMP (amazing how fast these NFL defenders are).  An absolutely horrible holding call on Legs.

25.  1-20; 31

Pro Lt. Weak Y-Up

60 Pro

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Green starts out helping Dielman and then makes a pretty amazing recovery to adequately pick up the edge rusher.

26.  2-16; 27

23 Gun Empty

50 Pro

LT-2; LG-2; C-1; RG-2; RT-2

The left side does well.  I end up docking Hardwick on this play.  There is a simple three man stunt on the right.  The 3 and the 5 crash A and B respectively.  This leaves the edge blitzer in C.  However, Hardwick is slow to slide and Vasquez and Clary have to stay on the 3 and 5.  A double switch of Hardwick taking over the 3, Vasquez taking over the 5, and Clary picking up the blitzer would be ideal.  UNLESS the protection is designed to have Volek pick up the blitzer (via a hot read to the blitzer’s zone…I don’t think that’s the case here, but it is technically a possibility).  On a side note, welcome to the Chargers Josh Reed!

27.  1-G; 8

Texas Lt. Y-Flanker

23 Zone Lead

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Hardwick does very well to get the LB, same for Clary.  The unblocked end (by design) GMP.  However, watch Legs.  In a real game, what might the coaches come back to later? <insert image of Dr. Evil putting pinky finger to mouth>  Legs would be WAO on an end around.

28.  2-G; 6

Texas Lt. Y-Flanker

23 Zone Lead

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Line blocks well again.  Hester leads on the A gap, but the safety shoots the B gap and GMP.

29.  3-G; 5

22 Gun Rt.

60 Pro

LT-1; LG-1; C-2; RG-1; RT-1

Bad, just bad.  Both sides face twists, both sides fail.  Left side doesn’t switch and Green loses his man completely.  Right side does switch, but it’s sloppy and Clary can’t seal inside on the front end of the stunt.  No damage, but bad blocking.

30.  1-G; 1

Texas Wing Lt. (Domb checking in as the Y)

27 Power

LT-2; LG-2; C-2; RG-2; RT-2

Green does well.  Dielman and Hardwick have a designed double and stay on the playside 2i.  They bury it.  Vasquez pulls around and crushes.  Clary has a very difficult play.  Since Hardwick is doubling at the POA (point of attack).  We have no one to secure backside.  So Clary has to get a 2 tech.  He is able to cut and stick the 2.  Very, very tough block.  Domb, as the Y, misses the LB but at least makes him go around.  Same with Hester, who misses but forces his guy around.
