Ian Scott has now been released as well.

My Chargers depth chart from last week predicted Ian Scott being cut, and Ellison being released earlier opens up a spot for probably Ogemdi Nwagbuo or Antwan Applewhite.

I am a little surprised by Ian Scott getting cut

I thought I had heard that he was playing with the first string in the offseason practices. I wonder if he got dinged up and they weren’t willing to wait it out with so many other capable guys available.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Perhaps they simply read my depth chart post and realized there’s no room for him on the roster?

Either they’re taking your advice, or John Gennaro is a fake name and this is just AJ Smith writing his own blog!!!

I’m onto you now…

LOL

I’m prertty sure John Gennaro IS a fake name. Could be wrong though.

I’d either have to be a genius or really stupid to come up with a fake name as boring as John Gennaro.

Way to misspell genius.

Haha, Spelling is not one of my strong points.

See the article where I butcher Seyi Arijotutu.

Maybe not the best spot for this question

But does the fact that VJ and MM haven’t signed, and probably won’t, mean that their two roster spots (53 man) are available for other players?

by riversformvp on Jun 21, 2010 2:01 PM PDT reply actions

the 53 man roster doesn’t exist until the final cuts the week before the first regular season game.

I think the training camp/off-season roster is 80 man, and since VJ and McNeill don’t have a signed contract, they don’t take up one of those spots.

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Jun 21, 2010 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I think that will be true for the eventual 53 man roster as well

If you are unsigned, then you are basically a free agent and not on the team. It’s just that the rules of the CBA limit you to only being able to negotiate your contract with one team.

Exactly.

And if/when they do sign, the chargers will then have to release somebody in order to make room.

by Its Mikey!! on Jun 21, 2010 2:13 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

What I was thinking was that this move might open up a spot for some young guns

But it wouldn’t make sense to cut him now since he might be valuable to the young guys during training camp. So there must be something else going on that we just don’t know about yet.

by riversformvp on Jun 21, 2010 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

One thing to keep in mind

Is that due to the lack of salary cap the team may have brought in more veterans to compete than normal. With some time to see the younger players they can let some of the older guys going since they were basically just insurance anyway. It’s also fairer to the veteran player who can now look for another team.

according to pft

they also cut fullback Cory Jackson, and wide receiver Jordyn Jackson.

by cameronm on Jun 21, 2010 2:22 PM PDT reply actions

Neither are big surprises

Some commenters here wanted C. Jackson to be kept around as a blocking full back, but there is just not enough space in the backfield. PS spots are looking to be more useful in OL, DL, LB and WR positions at this point.

by riversformvp on Jun 21, 2010 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah i agree

and i figure the team thought they were better off with Billy Latsko as that true fullback if they really want one. why teach a new guy a new system when you already have someone who knows it and does the same thing.

This also may be a side effect of the McMichael signing

Kris Wilson now slides back into the 3rd string TE and backup FB role and it pushes everyone else back on the depth chart leaving no room for noobies.

or that one of the rookies might claim the #3 spot (Epps or that UDFA we signed)

I'd be shocked if McMichael isn't ahead of Wilson on the depth chart
