Around SBN: Lance Berkman Could Have Torn ACL

The Chargers have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent wide receiver Josh Reed, a former Buffalo Bill with more than 3,500 career receiving yards on his resume.

A second-round pick of the Bills in 2002, Reed had 311 career catches for 3,575 yards and 10 touchdowns in eight seasons playing in Western New York. A part-time starter for the Bills, Reed was a consistent weapon in their offensive arsenal, recording at least 30 catches and more than 400 yards in six of his eight seasons. Reed enjoyed a career-best season in 2008, racking up 597 yards on 56 catches. He also averaged an impressive 11.5 yards per catch average during his tenure with Buffalo. The Bills opted not to re-sign Reed when his contract expired following the 2009 season.

"We are excited to have Josh join us," said Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith. "He was a consistent performer in Buffalo for many years. With his experience, he will be a solid compliment to our receiving corps."

A native of Rayne, Louisiana, Reed was drafted by the Bills after an outstanding collegiate career at LSU, one that he capped off in 2001 by claiming the Biletnikoff Award as the NCAA’s top wide receiver. He entered the NFL Draft as a junior after that ’01 season in which he also earned consensus All-America honors, leaving LSU as the first 3,000-yard receiver in SEC history. In 2007, while playing in the NFL, Reed was named to the SEC’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.

I was waiting for who we would sign. never really heard of this guy. his nfl resume isn’t too shabby but his college resume is pretty wicked.

Seriously?

I don’t really understand how people don’t know Josh Reed. He was stunningly good in college. One of the best college WRs I’ve ever seen. He carried LSU to one of their championships (the Saban one) and I’ve been a fan ever since. He has relatively average height, speed and size, but great heart, route-running and hands. He’s like Eric Parker but better.

Good to hear

That he’s got credentials. I don’t really follow college too much though, I guess I should.

wow… unlike the tra thomas signing, this is impossible to explain outside of AJ truly believing that VJ will not be playing this year.

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Jun 11, 2010 12:26 PM PDT reply actions

Take what?

I don’t think that a journeyman possession receiver is the answer to VJ not playing with the team this season. If they think a non VJ year is a good possiblity then I think they needed to look at a free agent wide out that is a better fit.

Who would you suggest? TO?

I would have to look at a complete list of FA WRs

and do a little research before I would make my final choice, but off the top of my head I don’t think that Kelly Washington has been signed yet. In my opinion Washington fits the mold of a Charger’s wide out better than Reed and I think he has more upside.
The Bills wanted Reed to be their #2 but he could never win the job, maybe he will finally come into his own now I don’t know.

by JeromeB on Jun 11, 2010 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

You’re completely ignoring the fact that this was a one-year contract. No way Washington takes a one-year deal in his current situation. It sounds like you want another tall wide receiver. Here’s a list of unrestricted free agent WRs that are 6’3" or above:

Terrell Owens
Marcus Maxwell
Ruvell Martin
Kevin Walter
Kelley Washington

Scratch that

Ruvell Martin (Sea), Marcus Maxwell (Sea) and Kevin Walter (Hou) have both been signed. So it’s Washington or Owens.

Yeah umm...

I still would have gone with Owens just for arguments sake.It would be intriguing to have a reformed TO in the Chargers Org.

He was the best fit that I could think of

off the top of my head. I wouldn’t say that I want only a WR that is tall , even though the Chargers seem to like that. I think the Chargers WRs stretch the field and are able to go deep, and I don’t see this as something that Reed has been good at, he has been more of a possession guy. I think a WR that can go deep is more important in the Chargers offense than strictly a “tall” WR.
Also I am not sure what Washington would or would not take at this point, so far he has nothing so who knows.
I don’t think that Reed is much of a step up, if any, over what we already had on the roster. Perhaps he is only being brought in to take your boy Buster’s spot on the roster, if that is the case then I am fine with it.

Dude, John...

Cmon man Acee reported that even the organization doesn’t see him as a VJ replacement.

I like getting another high possession/route runner

V-Jax has the height and that is nice. But Floyd is just as tall, and we have a few tall UDFAs too. I like adding in another guy like Reed to mix things up for the zone coverage.

Buster was supposed to play that role for us. Turned out all Buster really did was use up all the Bengay.

Missed that one

because I didn’t think the Chargers would go after Reed. Right now, this team has not gotten better since the end of last year. The younger players gotta step up.

Rivers to Reed just doesn’t sound as good as Rivers to Jackson. Oh well, so goes the business…

Thanks Vince.

I don’t think he was signed to be a #1 WR.

agree

Like I said bring in Owens..he’s calmed down a little,he doesn’t drive while intoxicated and he’s a solid #2 maybe #1 wr…i know he’s asking for #1 money but maybe if AJ came at him with an incentive laden contract we’d be able to get a real solid contributor. Maybe not on ST but nonetheless a solid WR.

by Gorditoe1 on Jun 12, 2010 1:04 AM PDT up reply actions

No, but he might end up as #2

Floyd, Nannee, and Davis is what we have now. If he can’t beat out Davis, then he should be cut. You can’t have a #4 or #5 receiver if he doesn’t play special teams. He is 5’10, 30 yrs old, and has usually just been a PR or KR on special teams. Basically we didn’t sign him to replace Kassim, we signed him to replace Jackson.

And if he doesn’t play special teams and ends up not being activated like Buster the last 2 years, then why not just sign one of the UDFA’s? I would rather have Banks or Ajirotutu take his spot.

Thanks Vince.

For some reason, I’m not that nervous about a WR core lead by Floyd, Buster, and Naane. Floyd looked really good against the (admittedly hapless) redskins…

I’m not discounting VJ’s premiere top-10 talent, but I would shade to the side of PR making him look better than he is.

Bills fan here...

Josh Reed was extremely underappreciated in Buffalo IMO. The guy made big plays on third downs and would make the tough catch in traffic. He’s actually pretty decent when run blocking too. The Bills haven’t had a decent QB in years so Reed never really had a great chance to show all he can do on the receiving end. I don’t know what you guys are looking for from him, but if it’s a guy that runs great routs, is reliable on third downs and will block well in the run…. that’s what he’s proven he can do. I think he could really surprise in San Diego.

Osgood minus special teams contributions?

by Orz on Jun 11, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

He's definitely not a special teamer

I don’t see much of a comparison there honestly, unless Osgood was more productive than I remember. Reed is a guy that can be counted on in the slot to catch a tough pass especially on third downs to get them a first. He’s not near as tall as Osgood and I’d say he’s one of the better route runners I’ve seen. I’d venture to say that if he can get in sync with Rivers, he could make a solid contribution from a receiving standpoint.

You're right

Osgood wasn’t really a receiver, he was really just a special teams ace. Thanks for coming over, it sounds like Reed might be a good find.

Sure thing

My wife is a big bolts fan. I like to keep up on what the Chargers are doing. Hopefully Reed can make an impact or at least scare VJ back into playing. Speaking of which, if things get ugly with McNeill, ship him to Buffalo. We need some serious help on the O-line.
