Really?

Bronko Nagurski, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (extra credit for KGB), Alge Crumpler, Dick Butkus, Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala would bump out all of those for me. I’m sure there are more too.

I like these, especially Na'il Diggs

I guess i should’ve labled the post "Most appropriate player names in NFL history" though. For ex. the lineman with a name spoken like "mangled". And as funny as Dick Butkus is, he didn’t do too much "butt kiss’’ ing in his playing days. BUT if his name was Dick Neckerbreaker, then we’d have a winner.

Keep ’em comin.

That was about half of my thoughts

It’s like half-appropriateness, half-awesomeness. Nagurski, Diggs, Peerless for a diva position (even if he wasn’t the worst offender) are the most player-appropriate. And I think Alge Crumpler sounds perfectly apropos for a round-bodied TE….or maybe his lesser-known dad and brother (two different people in case any hill-folk are reading), Carlester Crumpler.

Butkus is definitely the outlier; it just became so synonymous with that position that it sounds right in hindsight (I think this might be a similar justification for Unitas on your list?). KGB and Chris [bad mofo] just for originality. Also, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing – Obafemi Ayanbedejo.

I guess “appropriate” doesn’t really work on Unitas (best I can come up with is “you need a” QB?) or JJ Stokes IMO. Youngblood only for the “blood” in his name, sort of muted by “young” for me personally. Mangold-“mangled” works well, Swann for gracefulness I get.

Nice lighthearted topic for a slow time. Holds me over until Thursday when Yahoo fantasy football is scheduled to launch.

Larry Csonka, Haloti Ngata, Brandon Manumaleuna, Seyi Ajirotutu (hasn’t played in the NFL yet, I know), and Richie Incognito.

LaDainian Tomlinson was kind of a cool name too.

Spikes… good call.

Ogemdi Nwagbuo is pretty cool too, when it’s just OG especially.

I tend to like "football" names that fall into a couple different categories...

Names with a “throwback” feel to them (Especially if there is a “geological” element involved)…

  • Rock Cartwright
  • Steve Stonebreaker
  • Stoney Case
    .
Guys whose nicknames have become their “real” names…
  • Rocky Macintosh
  • Deuce McAllister
  • Macho Harris

    Other random favorites:
Napoleon McCallum, Stan Brock, Ali Highsmith, Vai Sikahema.,..
    .
