Dare I say it?

Somebody woke up Al Davis. He hasn’t made a bad move since November.

"When they come for me I'll be sitting at my desk, with a gun in my hand wearing a bullet-proof vest, singing 'My, my, my, how the time does fly when you know you're going to die by the end of the night.'" - Catch 22

by John Gennaro on May 6, 2010 1:13 PM PDT reply actions

I wonder

perhaps he is dead, no one noticed and the place just runs better that way.

If the Raiders revive as a franchise I would think it would be better for football in your division even if it does mean two less byes each year (I better not talk too loud considering the Steelers success with them last year).

How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?

As iron sharpens iron...

I’d love a more competitive division to give our boys more practice against playoff caliber teams, even it if does cost us our streak and a few wins a year.

by sd_Baby-B on May 6, 2010 5:26 PM PDT up reply actions

so this is what happened to my fanshot....

Anyway, everyone saw this coming.
Russell has had like 4 good games his whole career. and that doesn’t justify 30 bad games. He’s not cut out for the NFL. I bet he could become a tight end. With a lot of effort and time. And hope.

by Superduperboltman on May 6, 2010 1:19 PM PDT reply actions

Uh-oh

Our streak may be in jeopardy now that they may have a QB

If I agreed with you, we would both be wrong

I don't entirely understand everybody's thought

that Jason Campbell is going to be the answer. The Redskins didn’t win with him and as far as I can tell, the two teams are fairly similar.

Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.

by Mad_Villain on May 7, 2010 5:47 AM PDT up reply actions

He's better than Russell.

true

but as a team were their results not similar? I don’t know. I know Campbell is a huge upgrade. But he’s not a savior.

I don’t think you appreciate just how bad Russell was.

This is actually pretty worrisome.

Of the three divisional teams, the one I’m most worried about at the moment is actually the Raiders. I think they proved last year that they’re a pretty physical, talented group. They nearly beat the Chargers in the first game of the year and they beat Cincy, Philly and Pittsburgh.

The primary thing holding them back was their QBs, where they either had a lazy fatboy in Jamarcus Russell or their decently preforming backups who got injured. I was hoping they’d at least keep Russell on for one more year out of stubbornness, but I guess that’s not to be.

I love my team of historically talented underachievers.

by DoubleViking on May 6, 2010 1:31 PM PDT reply actions

I agree

As blasphemous as this may sound, the Raiders might actually be good this year. Potential wildcard?

I just want to get paid to draw naked girls, is that so much to ask?

by tonoxtono on May 6, 2010 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Remote potential, but yeah.

6-10 wins.

Without JaMarcus, we don't win that '08 game @Oak, and miss the playoffs.

I said it before

This is a sad day.

So many times he’s saved us. So many times his incompetence has helped the Chargers to victory over Raiders teams which might have beaten us with even a mediocre QB at the helm.

And ironically, he’s also had some good games to beat Denver and other playoff contenders in order to help the Bolts into the post season. In 2008, we don’t make the playoffs without his special bipolar talents.

We’ll miss you tubby.

Thank God

now we don’t have to see on draft day anymore, "and the #1 NFL bust of all, Chargers, Ryan Leaf.

Thank GOD!

by Schwing on May 6, 2010 1:56 PM PDT reply actions

Thing is, I don't see him as really surpassing Leaf unfortunately.

Yeah, Russell is fat and lazy, but Leaf was abrasive, arrogant and a complete ass. Qualities like that kind of overshadow Russell’s in my eyes.

I’m hoping Russell will eventually be crowned as the greatest draft bust of all time to finally remove that stigma from the Chargers, but who knows.

I love my team of historically talented underachievers.

by DoubleViking on May 6, 2010 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly

Leaf was the douchebag. Russel was just an oaf.

by creanium on May 6, 2010 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

But hopefully they play up how he slept in meetings to make him a HUGE bust.

Wishful thinking I guess.

by Schwing on May 6, 2010 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Leaf's reputation may keep him in the top spot

There’s too much bad tape on Leaf, too many painful memories. Freaking out at reporters, legal troubles, drug issues.

Those things don’t have anything to do with his on field performance (at least not directly) but the reputation is still there and I think it will keep him up there.

Jamarcus was a lousy QB with a bad work ethic, but he never had the same kinds of blow ups and disasters like Leaf. Russel has a relatively low profile by comparison, and doesn’t grate people nearly as much.

Maybe with time perception could change, but I find that sports narratives tend to have a lot of sticking power, regardless of their underlying facts.

by CABurrito on May 6, 2010 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

indeed

in fact, there are plenty of QBs taken with one of the top picks in the draft who have flamed out as quick as Leaf, yet Leaf remains the name most often mentioned. Remember Tim Couch? Akili Smith? Both were at least as big a bust in terms of NFL impact as Leaf, yet Leaf remains the gold standard.

also, you have to take into consideration...

didnt bobby beathard also trade the next years #1 and a lower pick to arizona to move into that second spot? i may be wrong, but i think he did, and if so, at a cost of 2 #1 picks, leaf was definitely a bigger bust

by $#%@ eli and his daddy on May 6, 2010 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes he did

He also gave up KR Eric Metcalf.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Even just looking at on field performance

Leaf was worse than Russell. Shocking but true.

by JeromeB on May 7, 2010 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Russell’s 2009 was worse than any of Leaf’s seasons, but Russell’s first two seasons were better than any of Leaf’s seasons.

by Richard Wade on May 7, 2010 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions

What really makes Leaf's on field play worse to me

is the fact that he was a turnover machine. There is no doubt that Russell is one of the worst QBs ever, but in 25 games Leaf fumbled 24 times and threw 36 picks. Thats 60 turnovers in 25 games. He had a hard time just getting the snap from center at times.
By comparison Russell has played 31 games with 15 fumbles and 23 picks.

You are right about Russell’s 09 season, but as a whole I don’t even think that it is very close, Leaf’s play over his career was far worse in my opinion. I think Leaf’s off the field antics tend to make people forget just how crappy a player he was. He was just as big a loser on the field as he was off.

by JeromeB on May 7, 2010 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Instead of games played

I really should have mentioned career passing attempts.
Leaf 655 with 36 picks and 24 fumbles
Russell 680 with 23 picks and 15 fumbles.

Leaf career passer rating: 49.95
Russell passer rating: 65.2

Finally its time for the weekend and drinking to begin.

by JeromeB on May 7, 2010 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll give it to Russell since was a REAL #1 pick

Leaf was #2 overall, so, I’ll give him less of a bust.
In addition, there is a huge discrepancy in the amount of money (about twice as much
and nearly times as much guaranteed) handed out between the two,
so it really looks like the Russell pick was worse.

by riversformvp on May 7, 2010 9:34 AM PDT up reply actions

leaf was 2 high first round picks...

and a 3rd (or 4th, i dont remember) plus, at the time, one of the top return men in the league, as far as salaries go, there was 10 years in between them that you have to take into account, so as much as i hate to say it, leaf was by far the bigger byst, and set his team back the farthest

by $#%@ eli and his daddy on May 9, 2010 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions

He'll find a new team...

Someone will take a flyer on him, maybe as a backup, i wouldn’t rule out the Steelers taking a look now Ben is suspended.
