Knowshon Moreno v. Ryan Mathews

I was listening to NFL radio today and a caller brought up Knowshon Moreno and his performance and I started thinking. Last year before the draft a lot of us where hoping that the Charger's would draft Knowshon with the 16th pick until the Donkeys swiped him ahead of us. Then I started to think, maybe that was a blessing in disguise. I asked myself who I would rather have carrying the rock for us. Based on Moreno's numbers last year I honestly think we are gonna be better off. Moreno's lack of moves and break away speed(which was his biggest knock pre-draft) was apparent in his 3.8 ypc. Also, for all the talk of him being such a great receiver he only had 28 catches and was limited on third down due to pass protection issues. I am personally much higher on Ryan Mathews than Moreno. So, based on what we know so far (which isn't much for both guys), and the fact that both backs were selected #12 overall, I wanted to get the opinion for BFTB nation.  Who would you prefer to have in our back field, Moreno or Mathews?

Mathews for sure

Funny you bring this up i was just thinking about that.

i would definitely take Mathews but then again i was really high on Moreno last year and we still dont really know what we have in Mathews.

I for one am very glad we have Mathews though, hes bigger, faster, stronger, and has better balance and vision.

But we dont really know yet, it will be interesting to look back a couple years from now and compare the two runners.

Ryan Matthews

Before we get down on Moreno, lets remember that except for Ryan Clady
no one on Denver’s O-line would start in San Diego. I expect great things
from Matthews, but our O-line is much better than Denver’s line. Although it comes
in for much criticism, it is talented and deep.

their right tackle, Ryan Harris i think

Is pretty good, he would definitely start of Clary or Dom

Not to bring any facts into this

Harris started 200 less snaps and had more penalties. Pro Football Focus
rated Clary at 24 and Harris at 38 for tackles. So I wouldn’t give away Clary’s
job just yet, unless it was to Dombrowski. Note Clary rated as a better run blocker
by a lot over Harris.

Who the heck is Clary

Look guys, Clady could start for all 32 teams and Harris would start for most (if he recovers from the foot injury). It was the injuries to Harris and in the middle of the line, especially the Guards, that made Knowshon and the Denver run game disapear the second half of last year. I will be interested to see how both backs perform, as they are both very talented if given the right protections.

The only reason

To like Moreno over Mathews is that Moreno is a steady, durable back whereas Mathews is the potentially injury prone explosive back. I’m definitely biased though. I would have been down on the Chargers last year if they’d picked Moreno. He’s just too boring (for lack of a better word) for my taste.

I think No Show Moreno

Had like the lowest speed score of any first round back. I didnt want the Chargers to consider him at 16 in 2009.

IMO

You got your wish.

They didn’t consider him.

I didn't like him

for the Chargers last year either. He seemed pretty run of the mill, particularly speed wise.

Of course I was rooting for Ayers, and he didn’t do much either.

I guess...

not as many people liked Knowshon as I thought.

Do not consider this random sampling

Ask this question again when all the inseason commenters are here and you’ll have plenty who would say A.J. is an idiot for passing on Moreno.

Anyone who likes Moreno better than Matthews is not wrong… yet.

Right

Because A.J. would never trade up to get a RB.

I'm just saying...

we didn’t pass on him with our pick, he was taken before our pick. We don’t know what AJ would have done if he was still there at 16.

by peejo on May 16, 2010 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

well...

i wouldnt say aj would NEVER trade up for a rb..i think seeing as to sd had the vision to see LT for what he was, possibly it shows something that they were willing to risk moreno being there and if so maybe taking him, and this yr were not willing to wait on mathews.

I would

He’d never ever ever trade up to get a RB. Never. Ever.

Actually the title of this article originally read: Knowshon Moreno v. Ryan Matthews

peejo must have fixed it. Not a big deal to me I just noticed it was a common misspelling I even thought it was Matthews at first.

I cleaned it up.

I'll give Mathews a season, but I lean his way as well

A few thoughts, though…

If KnoMo had been drafted by the Chargers, I think his 2009 numbers would have been better. Fitting into SD’s established system seems easier to me than accommodating McD’s growing pains. Denver’s zone-block OL began the transition to a power-block scheme in 2009 — OL confusion is an RB’s worst nightmare.

In the draft, KnoMo was billed as an RB who could do it all: run, catch, and block. He also supposedly had great vision. Despite occasional glimpses, he wasn’t overly impressive at any of these. He needs to do a better job in 2010 of living up to his billing.

KnoMo was hurt much more than you might think, and when healthy he arguably wasn’t the best back on the roster (C.Buck regularly out-performed him). Even so, he ran for nearly 1,000 yards in his rookie year, so it’s far too early to call him a bust. I look forward to seeing him healthy, more experienced, and in a more solidified scheme.

Regarding Mathews, he should definitely help between the tackles (where LDT was money in his day), which is where SD needs him most. Mathews also has the advantage of a well-established and feared passing game, which should help him immensely. Moreno, not so much.

I'm not sure what it is

But I don’t like running backs until they are in the league. Last year I was hoping we wouldn’t get moreno and laughed when Denver picked him. This year I was hoping we would wait on a rb and get one in later rounds. Since mathews is now a charger, of course I’d prefer him over knowshon. I’d much rather have a better player with injury risk over a steady so-so.

How many yards did Mathews get last year in the NFL? Oh, -0-

I hope Mathews tears up the league this year but let’s get real. He has run 0 touches in the NFL. I couldn’t believe that in a poll he was rated 10th best athlete in the NFL. Let’s face it. To date his done bupkiss! I support him but hopefully he won’t read all these comments on how great he is because he might believe he’s already there. Again, so far he isn’t great. He has tools but if I had a Home Depot in my pocket I still couldn’t build a house! Sproles catching a drop off pass has proved himself. Ryan might be the bruiser they need so you have two backs in Sproles and Mathews. As far as the rest, Hester, Latsko and Tolbert have been a bust, and Brinkley C. Jackson, Mason and McNeal weren’t drafted by anybody. Even if Ryan has a great year, the Bolts need a widebody like an Emmit Smith, a BANGER. Our guys are wearing tutu’s.

You can't judge Moreno yet...

Last season he played behind a injury prone O-line, he’s getting more comfortable with himself, and could be very scary this season.

The Broncos have been revamping their rushing attack, moving Spencer Larsen to fullback, having Tight End Marquez Branson fill in as fullback, signing fullback Kyle Eckel, Rushing behind a fullback was when Knowshon Moreno was at his best last season, and the Broncos look to use more fullback formations this season.

Expect a different Knowshon Moreno in 2010, a more confident, comfortable, faster rusher.
