Russell’s release to come this week? - NFL.com
NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora considers JaMarcus Russell‘s release by the Raiders a matter of when, not if. And the when could come before this weekend’s minicamp in Alameda, Calif.

Broncos deal with eye on chasing Chargers - Mike Klis (H/T MHR)
Overpowered by the San Diego Chargers at the line of scrimmage for years, the Broncos went into free agency and spent $50 million to rebuild a new, three-man defensive line, then used the draft to add a tackle, a guard and a center to their offensive front.

"LT: nothing against Chargers, just AJ" by Bolts Bulletin
"I would hope so, because I really have a lot of respect for the Spanos family," Tomlinson said. "But my relationship with A.J. has been rocky. And so it’s hard for me. It’s hard for me to just accept going to retire with the Chargers with A.J. being there."

Free-agent signings spur competition - Kevin Acee - SignOnSanDiego.com
Among the 20 undrafted free agents signed since the NFL draft ended Saturday, the Chargers found competitors for depth on their offensive line, perhaps injury protection at wide receiver and an intriguing candidate to throw into the battle to be the third running back.

AJ should disguise himself as the bolt mascot

during LT’s retirement. When the time is right to surprise LT (probably during tears of some sort), AJ can reveal himself.

Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.

The Almost Team

The Boltz have an excellent coaching staff and the team on paper is very strong. Upstairs we have a major issue, just ask Donnie Edwards, L.T., Marty, Jr. and others. The problem is in the office as it is filled with more arrogance than paperwork. The arrogance is causing players to rebell and not want to play for management. Even the media and reporters whisper under their pens about what a jerk A.J. is. I’ve even heard reference about this pompous a$$ by commentators of NFL games. His offensive demeanor is no secret. He won’t communicate with certain players, media, fan’s and more. It makes me wonder about the Spanos family? Are they blind or deaf? The team is still performing on what Marty built. Norv is a great, yes great, offensive mind and surrounded by coaches as good as any team has. He was also a great Q.B.

Only for the Hall of Fame
1. Why does it matter if AJ is a jerk or not?

It only matters if AJ decides not to sign LT for a day so he can retire a Charger. But that kind of a deal is almost completely out of AJs hands.

2. Of all the "disgruntled" players that have left SD under the AJ era name one that has gone on to have any kind of success.
There was this one guy… Drew Brees – although not very disgruntaled.

Turner left as well

Also not disgruntled.

For the most part, the disgruntled ones were mad that AJ correctly diagnosed their decline. We’ll see if the same can be said for LT

What exactly did Marty build?

Besides the reputation of post season failure?

I love how people still bitch about Donnie Edwards.

He played like crap after he left the Chargers and has been out of football since 2008. Maybe AJ did the right thing there?

Sob

May I am gonna miss him.

And the damnedest thing is he actually managed to beat the Broncos a few times and in so doing help the Chargers get to the playoffs.

Take care you big slug.

after watching that video

makes me appreciate Rivers’ accuracy and intelligence

He always managed to look pretty decent against the Chargers

save for the second game in 2008. He did save the best games of his career for the Broncos, though the best throw of his career was probably that one against the Chargers in 2009.

He's a little slow... but his line didn't do him any favors.

Watching that video convinced me of three things:

1) The Raiders have no mechanism to get quality play from an OT. They’ve had bust after bust at the most predictable position in the game.

2) Russell would really only have been an ordinary bust on a team with a good line, and would have succeeded perhaps if he went to a good team.

3) Either their new tackles are going to get the job done, or Campbell is screwed and the Raiders are still hosed. Of course, Campbell has proven that he’s better than Russell behind a lame line….

I remember

seeing him throw a frozen rope thirty yards to the end zone in his very first start against the Chargers. I thought, man is he going to be good when he gets up to speed. But he just kept getting slower.

JaMarcus or Leaf: Bigger Bust?

I can’t link to the 1090 interviews from work, but you guys have to listen to the Shaun Phillips interview. He has to be one of the most cocky and childish players on the Chargers. I hate that guy.

Thats a reason why I didn’t want Terrance Cody. Our so-called “leaders” on defense are not accountable guys and with Cody I think he would have not cared and been a bust. But on Baltimore, he is a great fit because I think their defensive veteran leadership is pretty good.

"Just because you went to the Finals last year, you can’t go out on the floor and expect teams to lay down. We got no heart. You can only make so many excuses. Everybody has to come and play hard, not just one or two guys."-Matt Barnes

by L Magico on Apr 28, 2010 10:23 AM PDT reply actions

I agree

I think we have minimal leadership on our Defense (at least compared to the vocal leaders around the league). I believe that all 3 of our rookies on D have a shot at being a leader…next year! No way a veteran (especially a cocky one like SP) will listen to a rookie. Hopefully Butler becomes our leader next year.

As for the bigger bust…Leaf, by a mile! Unless Russell gets cut, goes to another team and then drags that franchise down for the next 4 years. Leaf will always have the comparison to Manning, and I’m pretty sure the Chargers gave up a lot to move up in the draft for him…the Raiders selected Russell from their spot (I believe) so Leaf had more expectations. The Chargers also had a pretty decent team when Leaf was around and he brought the whole team down with him, Russell doesn’t seem to be a locker room cancer like Leaf was.

by Christopher Hernandez on Apr 28, 2010 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but Russell went #1 overall

the only reason the Chargers took Leaf is because Manning was already gone. That has to count for something. If Leaf had gone #1 instead of Manning he’d be even more of a bust but since he went #2 and Russell #1 I think they’re pretty close. As far as being a locker room cancer goes, just cause Russell doesn’t scream at reporters I’d still say he’s a locker room cancer. He’s supposed to be the leader but instead he’s a fat lazy bastard who’s teammates have no faith in.

The trade up for him

Seems to cancel out some of the #1 overall points I think.

The Chargers did stupidly trade up a spot for Leaf (a kings ransom to move up one lousy spot!). Had he been picked ahead of Manning, rather than after, it would be a lock as the biggest bust ever. But Jamarcus was selected first overall, ahead of guys like Joe Thomas and Adrian Peterson. He then held out and was rewarded with an incredible contract. I remember being dumbstruck by the fact that he would get paid more per year than LT, who was coming off his MVP year. I’m still kinda dumbstruck by that.

I think Leaf might be a more spectacular bust, but I don’t think its by a mile. Both are similar: high picks, big contracts, 3 years of failure which just got worse and worse.
