AFC West Team Needs - Pro Football Focus
A division that took plenty of abuse for some abject displays, the AFC West is in need of some upgrades talent wise. In the final look at NFL team needs, Ben Stockwell sees what the Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs and Raiders need to do to improve ...
The NFL Draft Drives Economists Crazy - Reed Albergotti
Under their plan, all 32 teams would be given seven picks. They would have to abide by a spending cap that would go higher to lower—with the worst team (based on its record the previous season) having the most money to spend. When the bidding opened, the most sought-after players would draw multiple bids. Teams could then raise their bid as high as they'd like for a player they coveted.
Adalius Thomas free to sign with another team - ESPN
Given the timing of the release, it appears the Patriots tried to trade Thomas during the draft and when nothing materialized, they went ahead with the release.
Jaguars cut DT Henderson - AP - ESPN
The Jacksonville Jaguars released two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle John Henderson on Monday, opening up a starting spot for first-round draft pick Tyson Alualu.
Why it is time to start respecting Norv Turner - Tosten Burks
He could have a better first name I suppose. And maybe he is a little short. Also, the cowlick is somewhat disappointing. But other than that, I really don’t understand Chargers fans. This is a city banded against its leader, a fan base united in opposition to its most important man. San Diego is anti-Norv Turner.

Ranking the QBs - Bill Williamson - ESPN
1. Philip Rivers, San Diego: OK, it’s not even close. Rivers is a top-five NFL quarterback who is getting better. He is 28 and in the prime of his career. He has premier skills, a smart player and he is a terrific leader. He is the full package. He’s the best player in this division and the primary reason why San Diego is head-and-shoulders above the competition in the division.

Given our schedule
I find it unlikely.

The Chargers don’t need to be jinxed. They can handle losing early season games just fine without help.

Yes
I’m sure I’ll be the only one predicting that we start the season well given our schedule.

In the last encounters against the 13 teams on the schedule
The Chargers are 12-1.

Profootballfocus?!?!?!?!
“…Scott Mruczkowski proved to be an upgrade on Nick Hardwick at centre…”
I closed the page at this point.
I often wonder about PFF
On the surface it seems like they should be a great resource, yet their numbers don’t always seem to mesh with reality or with other systems of evaluation.
At the risk of heresy
I thought Mooch really came into his own. He clearly had a nightmare game against Denver, but after he learned to pick up the A gap blitz; he was excellent. Hardwick hasn’t seemed quite the same to me since he came back from his foot surgery. I guess run blocking was suspect, but was it better in the few games Hardwick played?

I remember watching some of the plays with Hardwick post injury
And it seemed like on the types of running plays where Mooch would hold his own and keep his blocker in check Hardwick would instead get leverage and turn and move him to open a hole. I’m no expert offensive line analyst, but that impressed me.

Pro Football Focus my ass
PFF writers don’t even watch the teams they grade and report on do they? Upgrade over Hardwick? Nanee not solid slot? He catches any ball wthin 5 yards of him. PFF watches Favre Brady Manning leauge I doubt anything else.

I don't know
if you guys signed enough UDFA?
Twenty is an amazing number of people but I guess with the depth of this draft a lot of good prospects didn’t get drafted. It will be interesting to see how many will pan out.
How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?

we always get a bunch of UDFAs
last year we had 14. Players and agents know they will get a fair shake here. Guys like Dielman, Osgood, and Gates have become stars after starting off as UDFAs here. Even last year, with a pretty solid team, we had two UDFAs on the active roster (Holt and Spillman) and one on PS (Beckwith). We also had a TE on the PS that was eventually signed to Miami’s active roster (Kory Sperry)

out of 20 players
16 offense. 3 defense. 1 punter.
A weird mix in my opinion. I would have thought that they would bring at least 1 DL. And seeing how thin we could be in a year, only one ILB and one corner.
If I agreed with you, we would both be wrong

DT
lots of big nose tackles on the market that could be signed for cheap
"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken"- Colonel Sanders
it will be interesting to see how much he gets paid. He is a DT over 30 which means he is on his last leg. At the right price he could be valuable, but I bet other teams will value him (and pay him) more than the Chargers should.

He's not really a fit
in a 3-4 defense anyway so we probably don’t even go after him

The prototype for 3-4 NT
Is usually built like a fire hydrant. They are usually between 6’1 and 6’4 and over 315 lbs. Henderson certainly weighs enough (330 lbs), but he’s 6’7. If you combine that with his lack of experience at the position and his likely cost he seems like an improbable addition.
When you’re that tall its a little tougher to get leverage against a double team. There’s also more surface area on your chest for both of the blockers to put their hands. That’s not to say that a tall guy couldn’t do it, but they are at a disadvantage.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
sure
but 6’7 is a little tall for a 4-3 DT as well. come to think of it, it’s a little tall for a football player in general.

That may have something to do with Jacksonville's decision to cut him
Perhaps a DT that height doesn’t age particularly well since they need exceptional athleticism to play with that build.

So according to that "NFL Draft Drives Economists Crazy" article....
3 Harvard business school researchers and their professor got together and spent who-knows-how-many hours devising the ultimate solution to radically altering and improving the NFL Draft process, and what did all their effort and genius come up with?
An auction draft. Profiled with assigned dollar values in about a dozen fantasy football magazines every year for the last decade.
Amazing.
