Good job
As a dolphins fan, I really wanted Jeremy Williams and Stafon Johnson. Williams makes a good slot receiver and Johnson can be a goalline contributor.
Touchdown, Ronnie Brown Edition!
Stafon Johnson I think signed with the Titans, sorry for the confusion. I’ve removed his name.

A reminder
Here’s the UDFAs from last year that actually made the team:
Darry Beckwith
James Holt
C.J. Spillman

we had a TE who also made the practice squad
and then was picked up off the practice squad by Miami.
SD has always had good luck with the UDFAs

Big grain of salt with this stuff… I don’t see a Wookey on Palomar last year: http://www.palomar.edu/athletics/football/teamcume.htm#TEAM.DEF
I'm taking Wookey off for now
I’m skeptical as to his actual existence.

No way we trade for Roethlisberger
And we don’t need a DC either, so Rob Ryan is out of the question.

I’d like to bring in someone who has potential so that we could try somebody out for becoming the backup next year. I also have worries about Mathews making it through the season healthy.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
A valid point
If they are pretty sure that Sproles is gone next year then I guess they have to think about a future back up. At this point I think it is almost a set thing that Mathews, Sproles, Tolbert and Hester are on the team and Mason is the inactive back on game days. Maybe they want to see if Mason can become the back up next year.
Acee tweeted something about Tolbert getting more carries this year
I guess RMat goes down they’ll do a thunder and lightning with Tolbert and 43.

I am with you on Gates
I know most people will think this is crazy, but what would you have thought of Gresham being taken instead of Mathews. I think he would have been valuable on the field, but also as insurance for Gates.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Some solid UDFA pick ups
Jeremy Williams, WR, Tulane
Kion Wilson, ILB, USF
Seyi Ajerotutu, WR, Fresno State
These dudes are solid and probably all could have been drafted rounds 4-7 somewhere. I think these three make the team
I'm not sure Ajirotutu or Wilson signed with the Chargers
Do you have a good source?
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
I'd rather see Ajerotutu than Williams, if there's only one spot
Plus, you’ve got to factor in who they’ll be competing with. I think some other team would snap up and have success Buster if we cut him outright, so we should try and trade him if he doesn’t shake with our plans going forward. VJ and Floyd are safe for a season, and Naanee isn’t going anywhere. Plus there’s that WR who we kept instead of Charly Martin last season on the PS whose name escapes me…
Speaking of PS, Darry Beckwith is around there too. Unless anyone realistically expects Kion Wilson to compete with Cooper, Siler, Butler, and Burnett, I don’t see him sticking. If anyone’s got a chance in the LB corps it’s probably Brandon Lang, who is probably better than Jyles Tucker or even Antuan Applewhite.
I think Lang and James Holt could be terrorizing QBs from 2012 onward, to be honest. Maybe English too, if he gets his ass together.
Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.
by StrangeBroP25 on Apr 25, 2010 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions
It's tight at LB
Dobbins is gone so there is one spot
Holt was a big special teams contributor. But at 223 pounds he is the smalles LB on the roster. Probably undersized to play inside.
That being said………….Cooper and Burnett are both free agents after this year. There is no way Cooper gets resigned and if Burnett keeps getting hurt he could be gone too. There’s one maybe two spots. Frankly I think Coop could be released this year. Siler is hands down a better ILB. Siler should be starting so I think Coop is expendable. Especially because he’s such a liability in coverage. Opposing TE’s took advantage of him all year long.
Siler
Will be starting. And I agree. Coop could very well be gone. I wouldnt doubt for a second that Holt could take his roster spot. While Tucker could very well also be looking for work if Lang looks even half way decent and offers a little something in the kicking game
IMO
That kid Lang had super high ratings on NFL.com
I can’t believe he wasn’t drafted! Looks like a total sleeper pick who could add serious depth at OLB! If that’s the case Jyles Tucker is going to be gone!
It was listed here like 10 minutes ago now Wilson and Ajerotutu have been removed
Too Bad! Those two would be excellent additions.
Ah, sorry about that
If it helps, I haven’t seen them sign elsewhere.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
I'm sorry too!
Mostly because I thought those guys were undervalued pimps! Especially Ajerotutu. Thought that dude could be a Jackson / Floyd clone
I've been trying to think of where we might have holes in our 53 man that these guys could fit
And I think the biggest hole is OLB. There isn’t a lot of certainty after Phillips, Merriman, and English. We all like Applewhite, but he is not a sure thing, especially after spending a year on IR. Plus there is the much maligned Tucker. We will probably have 5 OLBs on the 53 man roster, so I think there is some room for one or two of those UDFAs to make the 53man.
I also think we’ve got room for a 3rd TE as well. Always room for a OL who shows some potential, especially an OT if we don’t think McNeill is going to resign (which we should know by the end of camp or earlier)
As said earlier, I can’t imagine any of the WRs making the team, unless they prove themselves as a ST stud and even then, it is a long shot.
All of these guys sound like at least potential practice squad guys, I am really impressed with some of the quality still available.

There's a decent chance
That Lang could show enough to encourage the release of Tucker. I like Lang, he showed an aptitude for converting to OLB.

do you think Jason Lamb is an OLB in our system?
or a DE? He’s a little big for a OLB, but a little small for a DE. His 40 time is very close to Lang’s
by Stephen (shaynes41) on Apr 24, 2010 7:46 PM PDT up reply actions
I saw him listed at 6’5" 285. that’s only 5 lbs less than Castillo’s listed weight. I think he puts on a few lbs and plays DE.
One UDFA WR will make the team for sure
We only have four on the roster. We started the season last year with six, for its a guarantee there will be at least 5. Applewhite is a beast on kicks and is cheap, he’s a roster lock. Tucker though better be concerned with Lang’s entrance.
IMO
Is it possible Jeremy Williams
Is there to compete for Buster Davis’ spot? That guy has not lived up as a first round pick at all!
I think that's exactly what he'll do
However, there should be a spot on the roster for both if they desire it since Davis was on the roster last year and someone needs to fill Osgood’s spot (although it’s not a given that spot will be filled by a WR).

Hopefully he’s back on the list to stay this time. Excellent option in case we can’t keep Vackson and Floyd next year.

I love Ajirotutu too
I have no clue if he really signed, but he’s on the list on the linked site so he’ll stay up until something changes. I don’t know why Acee is not tweeting any info on these. Maybe he’s taking a nap.

Kion Wilson confirmed by local paper's blog
http://blogs.tampabay.com/usf/2010/04/lb-wilson-signs-freeagent-deal-with-chargers.html
USF middle linebacker Kion Wilson, passed over in this weekend’s NFL draft, has signed a free-agent contract with the San Diego Chargers and will report to minicamp on May 6.
“They’re short at middle linebacker, and they run a 3-4 defense, so that’s two spots I can step in and contribute at,” said Wilson, who led the Bulls with 105 tackles as a senior and was named a first-team All-Big East selection by the league’s coaches.
Wilson said he also talked extensively with the Bills and Seahawks, but made the call to try his luck with San Diego, whose front office personnel had talked to him at the NFL combine workouts in Indianapolis. The Chargers drafted one linebacker, taking Washington’s Donald Butler in the third round.
Wilson had hoped to be drafted, but with the long odds that low-round draft picks can face to make a team’s roster, being a free agent allowed him to pick an optimal situation from across the league.

This guy is solid!
Glad we got him as an UFA. I think he, Jeremy Williams, and Seyi Ajerotutu will all make the team
WR #s
last year we had VJ, Floyd, Nanee, Buster, and Osgood, plus we broke camp with Chambers.
At the end of the season, we pretty much only saw VJ, floyd, and Nanee. Buster was always inactive and Osgood never actually played WR.
Let’s assume those four (VJ, floyd, Nanee, Buster) make the 53 man, I’m not sure we will have another WR… Although this would be a good year to have a developmental WR who is inactive every week, with VJ and floyd having one year contracts. We’ll have to see how the numbers shake out, but there is a decent change we won’t add an WRs to what we had at the end of last year.
by Stephen (shaynes41) on Apr 24, 2010 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions
Probably depends
on if any of those guys have special teams skills.
Not sure.........
Osgood is gone. If Williams or Ajerotutu have special teams value they could replace Osgood at gunner.
We probably won’t need to carry as many DEF linemen this year because we got a legit NT, which gives Norv an opportunity to have another WR active on game days.
Not sure………but the Buster project may be over. Glad to see some guys coming in to compete. Buster is always hurt or inactive and he’s way too small to take over for V Jack or Floyd.
Ajerotutu is a big body receiver:
1/25/10: Seyi Ajirotutu raised his stock at the East-West Shrine game; Marty Schottenheimer raved about him, comparing him to Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd.
If we can’t re-sign Floyd and Jackson who will both be free agents this guy is a perfect understudy.
I guarantee when AJ went to the Fresno State Pro day he wasn’t just looking at Matthews.
Again
There isnt a team in the league that carries 4 WRs. And Norv has carried 6 in the past. We will most certainly carry a 5th either as a developmental guy or a STer, hopefully both
IMO
we effectively had four after we cut chambers
osgood only saw WR action in the preseason and in the Redskins game. We probably will carry 5 this year, but I wouldn’t be shocked if we only carried 4. Especially if we can get VJ and/or Floyd signed to a long term deal before or during camp.
Its a little early to try and project the 53 man roster, I usually like to wait until early May for that. :-) But there is always some position group that gets squeezed. We went all year with 3 CBs! Unheard of.
by Stephen (shaynes41) on Apr 25, 2010 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions
As long as Norv is the coach
WR will not be the position group thats squeezed, you can book that. This is the same guy that had us carrying 6 WRs to start the season. It doesnt matter if Osgood was a pure ST player, that fact that his emergency position is WR and least gives some sort of injury protection.
Legs, Floyed, and Vjack are one one years deals, we HAVE to carry a WR especially considering the success the team has had developing them. And I dont ever remember us having 3 CBs at all last year. We had Cro, Jammer, Cason, and one of the Hughes brothers if I remember correctly.
IMO
the younger Hughes was on IR all year. We added Dante for week 8. So, seven weeks with 3 CBs, I stand corrected.

Seriously?
Not a SINGLE RB?
I know we have Matthews, Sproles, Tolbert, etc, but shouldn’t we at least have one or two as camp bodies? Doesn’t someone need to play in garbage time of preseason games in order to save our multi million dollar backfield?
Hester too… I think we’re OK on RB, we can always find another journeyman back like Bennett if we need.
Ya I know we have Hester and Mason, but I still think its weird to have only 5 RBs on the roster at this point. Is Mason really so much better than any of the potential UDFAs? Shouldn’t we have a 6th or 7th just for the sake of competition and to eat up time in the preseason?
Wait for final cuts.
The backup RB is on another team’s roster right now.

2 more signings
Dajleon Farr, TE, Memphis (transfer from Miami, 6’5", 250) – confirmed by Sun-Sentinel reporter’s twitter (http://twitter.com/OmarKelly)
Jordyn Jackson, WR/KR, Easten Oregon – agent’s twitter (http://twitter.com/BrettHickman)
Damn... where have all the running backs gone?
Andre Anderson (Tulane) signed with the Raiders
Blount and Bell are gone, as are James Starks (Buffalo), Keith Toston (Oklahoma State)
Shawnbrey McNeal of SMU is still out there. So is Brandon James of Florida, and LaMarcus Coker of Hampton, and Javarris James of Miami, and Mike Smith of Arkansas, and Roy Upchurch of Alabama, and MiQuale Lewis of Ball State… granted, none of these guys look like they could stick as much more than a kick returner.
One guy to keep an eye on is Deji Karim from Southern Illinois. He was drafted by Jacksonville in the sixth round. but I’m keeping an eye out— if doesn’t break camp with the Jags, I want him.
Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.
Javarris James is with the Colts
Mike Smith is not a RB, he’s just a really, really small kick returner.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Lamarcus Coker is still out there
He runs a sub 4.4 forty at over 200 pounds. Major character concerns after getting kicked out of Tennessee for failing like 4 drug tests.
We pulled Mason in as a FA. I live in the DC area and all the local ESPN guys raved about him and preferred him to Portis in the pre-season last year. Dude could be a serviceable back up.
We also drafted the Brinkley kid last year and he got shot in pre-season and was on IR all year. I looked at his numbers from Syracuse………they were impressive.
We’re probably deep enough at RB.
Bryan Walters
Went to high school with this kid. Happy to see this guy getting a chance to make the team. A contending team at that.
Curtis Brinkley
Is on the roster. We got him last year, but he got shot shortly after the draft. He was on IR, but is back this year.

He looked like a pretty good addition last year
He was second-team All-Big East after rushing for 1,164 yards and seven scores at Syracuse. Between him Marcus Mason, Matthews and Sproles I think there is plenty of depth at RB
FYI

Do we really need another fullback?
Tolbert and Hester, Wilson can play it in a pinch, and I believe Billy Latsko is still languishing on the practice squad. Signing Cory Jackson would bring us to five… damn. Could be better used evaluating other talent.
Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.
totally agree
FB was not a position that needed to be addressed. Tolbert and Hester are a good 1 / 2 at FB plus we have Billy Latsko. Unless the plan is to dump Latsko and keep Jackson, although I really don’t understand why we need 3 fullbacks
No harm in providing a little competition. Maybe he beats out Latsko for a PS spot. Maybe we have an unfortunate injury. Maybe they are trying to find guys who can contribute on special teams, something for which FBs are ideal.
Nothing ventured nothing gained. Worst case scenario, we send him home after camp.

We'll always bring in a 3rd FB I think
Hester and Tolbert are too important to play a whole half each in the first couple of preseason games. Also, the Chargers may want to use one or both as runningbacks in the 4th quarter of those preseason games and someone will have to block. There’s also a chance that one or both could get hurt in the preseason. Latsko is not as good of a FB prospect as Jackson.

also picked up Brady Bond
Hasn’t officially signed his contract, so maybe that is why he isn’t on any official lists.
This gives us a good selection of UDFA OTs. I think we’ve got a place on the 53 man for an additional OT, and probably a place on the PS for another. How many we keep probably depends on if McNeill gets an extension or not.
