San Diego Chargers Draft Cam Thomas DT
Going into the draft, there was a lot of speculation about the Chargers possibly grabbing Cam Thomas out of North Carolina with their 2nd round pick to be an eventual replacement for Jamal Williams. Well, A.J. Smith knew Thomas' value and waited to grab him with the 146th pick in the draft.
The Chargers have now plugged holes at RB (Ryan Mathews), ILB (Donald Butler), Safety (Darrell Stuckey, picked earlier today), third string QB (Jonathan Crompton) and DT. They have one pick left today, and the only glaring hole left is an Offensive Tackle.
This is turning into a heck of a draft for the Bolts.

Phenominal value in Thomas!
Most had a 2nd round grade on him. Better than Tourelle Troupe who the Bills took in the 2nd.
I can’t believe he was there in the 5th.
I think he’s that legit NT we were missing all of last year. Great job by AJ waiting till the 5th then moving up to grab this guy. I think this guy will immediatley make the defense more dynamic by occupying blockers and allowing the linebackers to make plays.
Fantastic pick.
Every pick has been preceded by a trade
Williamson: “San Diego traded their No. 159 pick and a fifth-round pick in next year’s draft to take Thomas.”
Anybody know what next year’s picks look like?
what next year’s picks look like?
Much better than the Donkos, that is for sure!
we will probably get about a 5th round comp pick
for losing osgood and Manu.

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th
Jets’ 2nd (probably) or 3rd (maybe)
Seahawks’ 3rd
Probably a late comp

Thiss draft is so deep with talent there are going to be numerous UDFAs
Who probably could have been 4th or 5th rounders any other year. Dwyer is still on the board in the 6th!
There are going to be a lot of good players left after round 7 ends.
The moves up to grab Matthews and Thomas were 100% necessary! Moving up to get “your” guy who will really improve the team. Uncertain whether the move up on Butler was necessary.
We stockpiled a bunch of picks next year in rounds 1 through 3.
People actually advocated drafting Dwyer at #28.

Yeah
Before the combine numerous projections had him at 28 to the Bolts. Cam Thomas was a 2nd round talent. This draft was so deep and there was so much movement.
I’m just excited we got our RB and NT.
But stay tuned. As I said there will be several guys projected 4-7 who will go undrafted. We could grab some talented guys after the draft too.
Great Pick
This years draft was so deep in talent that it allowed tremendous talents like Cam Thomas to drop all the way to the 5th Round, I believe A.J., has redeemed himself for overspending, plus giving away a 5th round pick in the 2011 is nothing compared to what this kid may bring to the Bolts DL this season.
I dont care about the experts comments on Cam: “Lacks an expanded pass-rush package and only flashes the ability to push the pocket when bull rushing. Thomas is clearly a two-down player who could be limited as a nose tackle at the next level, but players with his size and strength are hard to find.” So what?, our team needed a NT and we got one, somebody to plug the middle and this kid is a plug.
Welcome Cam Thomas to San Diego.
Totally agree on Thomas!
Great pick! Great value! One of the top NT propspects in the draft. This is what was missing from the DL last year.
Not sure we had to take Crompton the QB in the 5th. I think there are going to be a lot of UDFA QB’s who could have come in to hold the clipboard.
Overall great job by AJ. 2 biggest needs RB and NT were filled with top level talent.
Crompton
Crompton’s a stiff— not sure what they saw in him; but they’ll sign an UDFA as a fourth QB to compete.

He improved under Kiffin A LOT
That being said I think he had 2 very pedestrian seasons prior to that. Everyone says he has all the tools and could be really good under the right coach. Volek probably won’t be back after next year, he’s 35.
Could be a serviceable back up after ing coached up by Norv.
Probably a bit of a reach in the 5th. Especially with the other talent that was out there.
I trust Norv’s ability to spot a good QB

The longer this draft goes on the more excited I get
I can’t wait for the season now!
AJ does it again
I like how these picks are going to create a lot of competition for spots in training camp. Thomas was an absolute steal. I heard on nfl.com that Stuckey might be the draft’s biggest sleeper. I only wish we took an RB in the 5th instead of Crompton. Mathews injury history scares me.
if we sit tight
someone is going to cut an RB and we won’t have to trade. Any of the seahawks former RBs, the RB at buffalo, and probably others. We have our primary banger and our 3rd down guy, all we’re looking for is some guy to play the Bennet role and just look good inactive in street clothes most weeks. Pick that guy up off the scrap heap.

I am not sure that we need another RB
Mathews, Sproles, Tolbert and Hester will all make the team, and they could just as well keep Mason as the inactive gameday back.
good point
mason may be the 5th back. I guess my main point was that we should trade for our 5th back.

We picked up Marcus Mason
in free agency. I live in the DC metro area and people here were really talking about him a lot last year. Also we got that kid out of Syracuse last year Brinkley who got shot pre-season and was on IR all year. He’s back although I don’t know a lot about him.
How about Seattle?
They could be cutting some backs, they seem to have too many now, they picked up White and Washington, so could mean the end of Julius Jones or someone else.
oh yeah...
and on the actual topic subject, Cam Thomas in the 5th is a steal, maybe our best pick yet… Not too big on the QB though, we could’ve got Dwyer or something with that pick.
In my opinion our best pick as far as value
and it filled what might have been our biggest need at NT. Great value! We’re so lucky he fell to us.
I'm very happy with this draft.
- As good a shot at a starting RB as we can ever hope for.
- A top-five inside linebacker.
- A top-five nose tackle.
- A credible pick on a SS competitor.
- A QB project.
- A TE project.
Given what you know now, where are we weak that we didn’t shore up? What long-term holes are there on this roster that will be hard to fill if these picks pan out okay? We could kind of use a big-name defender for life after Merriman, but it was that or the big-name RB, and that’s what franchise tags are for.

Yeah. But really, whatever.
We have our LT of the future, and just have to lock him up. We have two decent RT prospects, which is as much as we were going to get if we wanted Ryan Mathews. We have seriously better-than average draft position next year in case neither one is the answer.

OK.........
Thought we could have taken a WR project a la V. Jack or Floyd as they are both UFAs next year
These guys are still left:
Seyi Ajerotutu, WR, Fresno State
Blair White, WR, Michigan State
Stephen Williams, WR, Toledo
Donario Alexander, WR, Missouri
We could have used another RB to spell Matthews:
Lonyae Miller, RB, Fresno State
Legarette Blount, RB, Oregon
Stafon Johnson, RB, USC
Joique Bell, RB, Wayne State
LaMarcus Coker, RB, Hampton
We could use an upgrade at DE:
Vince Oghobasse, DT/DE, Duke
Jay Ross, DT/DE, East Carolina
Ekom Udofia, DT/DE, Stanford
I’d like to see a Kicker to compete with Kaeding as the dude kicks like 50% or worse in the playoffs. Not just this last game against the Jets the guy just misses kicks when the pressure is on.
Brett Swenson, K, Michigan State
Aaron Pettrey, K, Ohio State
Upgrade at OT:
Ciron Black, OT, LSU
Tony Washington, OT, Abilene Christian
I’d like to see another QB brought in to compete with Crompton for the number 3 spot. Thought he was a bit of a reach in the 5th considering who was still on the board
Daryll Clark, QB, Penn State
Matt Nichols, QB, Eastern Washington
Jarrett Brown, QB, WVU
Ryan Perriloux, QB, Jacksonville Sta
Overall great job by AJ. Very happy with the RB and the NT! Cam Thomas was a tremendous value.
well...
judging from that list thee will be a few decent UFAs at the end of this, maybe LeGarrette Blount, Rahim Alem,. i liked Blair White as well.
There are lots of good UFAs
This draft was so deep and there were so many moves some good players with round 4-7 grades just dropped out entirely
None of the top kickers will come here
We’ll probably bring in a small school guy, if any.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Stuckey only a credible pick?
I read somewhere he could have been top 3 safety if not for an injury.
That translates to "credible" in my book.

any chance the bolts take a look at blount or stafon johnson?
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.
Hopefully Cam does well.
The Ace thinks he’ll slide immediately into the rotation on the DL. Hopefully this will shore up our run defense.

I think it's funny that the team on the Mexican border
has a 325-lb guy named Camaron.
