Santonio Holmes Traded To Jets... For 5th Round Pick!

I know the Steelers consider themselves to be the moral center of the NFL, but that the best value you could get for a young 1000 yard WR, who also got a Super Bowl MVP is a 2010 5th Rounder.  This sounds like an April Fool's trade, but it's confirmed. Jason La Canfora of NFL Network just confirmed, and ESPN News also confirmed.  The Jets have become the most hated for any Charger fan.

I guess Ben Roethlisberger better start hiring a realtor because his stay in the Steel City might be a lot shorter than any thought possible. Crazy Al & the Raiders should call the steelers in this moment of insanity and get Ben, to make nightmare complete for every Charger fan.

NYJ

the jets are looking to be the big dawg in the AFC this year.

This trade has Steelers fans in shock. Not the trade as much as the compensation.

I may be old but I... oh d*mn, I forgot what I was going to say.

Daygo we have a Problem !!!

The Jets are Officially a AFC Threat!!

by 40.OZ on Apr 12, 2010 4:36 AM PDT reply actions

Why do you say that. they dont have a team full of problem players.Besides they can obviosly see the organization is trying to make all the moves they can to win a championship. Wish i could say the same for our team.

by 40.OZ on Apr 12, 2010 7:18 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not saying that they are a team full of problem players.

It was a joke based on the fact that they just signed Antonio Cromartie (obvious problem player), and Santonio Holmes who merely has allegations against him.

OOOOH

Yeah I see what your saying now. Cromartie, Edwards, and now Holmes. but Holmes chargers were dropped and he doesnt get into major stuff like Rape! So I’m guessing Big Ben is next.

by 40.OZ on Apr 12, 2010 8:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Holmes does have a 4 game suspension coming his way next year

So says PFT and ESPN.

Schefter says it because of substance abuse. 4 games won’t kill you, but Holmes is one more infraction away from a 1 year suspension, which would make that 5th round pick seem like a pretty good deal.

That's a god damn steal

I’m putting money on the Jets to win it all this season, they’re aggressively building an excellent team. Get ’em while the price is good.

Now I really wanna see BMarsh traded

Because with Santonio Holmes going for a 5th, McDaniels could get himself a boatload of ham sandwiches in trade for BM and eat them noisily in front of Weis and Crennel before every KC game, not offering them any in hopes of goading them into a mistake.* They play the Jets next year, too, but psychological warfare isn’t a good plan on a Ryan. You know how you don’t mess with Sasquatch? Don’t mess with his brother, either.

Jets

Let’s not get too carried away and annoint the Jets quite yet. It’s only April. A football team has a lot of moving parts; and their team has the potential for a lot of catastrophic defects.

Reasons not to count Jets before they hatch

QB has int problems, is still fairly unproven.

  1. CB tackles like a girl.
    Defense fluctuates more than offense.
They play in a competitive division.

and there's more...

their running game is little less potent with swapping of Jones for LT (still love you). Sanchez was atrocious first half of the season. they managed him better towards the end but he could have a sophomore slump like Matt Ryan. Edwards will never be consistent so Holmes pick up is good. And Miami’s on the upswing as well as Pats will always be there. A very tough division. And I don’t buy that they have the best Oline in the league. They are aging and they just run attempt more than anyone else. I think lot of teams would have their type of running yards if they ran as many times.
They are renting lot of players for this season to go for broke (Holmes also on his last year of his contract). You won’t see lot of these guys on that team after 2010 season.

They’re a top 10 run blocking unit, though they’re not that great in pass protection.

a reciever to better help sanchez, a proven RB that some may argue lost a step, a cornerback whom with a defense like the jets can return to 10 pick season form. i see the jets as a very talented team.

I'd be very surprised if Cromartie has more than 3 or 4 picks in 2010.

neither would i. and really, i wont be surprised if he has 2 or 8. he has the athletic ability for it to happen.

Wow the jets shure like taking in criminals. Santonio, before that Cromartie who isn’t a criminal but had off field issues. Thay really believe they are the kings.

by Adriel Bergman on Apr 12, 2010 2:20 PM PDT reply actions

Calling the criminals is a bit much.

They both seem to just have issues with woman just like any other man in the world. Holmes got into a arguement with a drunk chick in a club name one guy here who hasn’t and i will name one guy who stays in the house friday nights wishing he was in a club and his other issue is he smokes weed where any red blooded san diegan knows we DEFFINATLY cant fault him for that. as for Cromartie hey the dude was getting alot of Pu$$y! his only crime is being to dumb not to reach for a condom 1st and i will admit i have commited that crime before. his major crime is he wouldnt tackle Shon Green for the win and for that he should be jailed, fined and suspended!

Ben Aint going anywhere

That was Holmes’ 5th run in with the law since he entered the league. He is just an above average receiver and replaceable. This is Roethlisberger’s 2nd run in with the law since he entered the league and he is an irreplaceable player whose brings massive income from merchandise sales. Big Ben will be a Steeler until he loses his athletic ability to prolong a play.

I have a feeling that when the end does come for Roethlisberger

It will be quick, brutal and certain. One year he just won’t be able to shrug off the hits anymore, and then he’ll start to suck, and then he’ll retire. A lot of QBs grow old gracefully, but I don’t see it in Big Ben’s cards.

HuH

above average receiver and replaceable doesnt even belong in the same sentence in the NFL! And if you compare Holmeses 5 run ins to ben’s 2 RAPE accusations in less than a year I’ll take a weed smoker who likes to go to clubs in HIS OFF TIME to a rapist anyday.so you think we should trade our above average Drunk ass receiver for a Meesilly 5th round pic! Lets Keep it Real!

by 40.OZ on Apr 13, 2010 8:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Two things:

1) Above-average receivers are replaceable if you have a team/staff that can get mileage from its receivers and has the stability to build them. I’m sure that Holmes will be missed in the short run, but in comes Mike Wallace, with Limas Sweed developing behind him. Somehow I wouldn’t be freaked out if I were a Steelers fan: maybe I’d be a bit disappointed in the crappy draft value for such a big-name player, but if a late 5th now is worth a comp 4th next year, then this Bolts fan knows the feeling. And besides, good players leave without compensation all the time.

2) Roethlisberger is, depending on how you read the tea leaves, somewhere between a jackass who makes bad personal decisions, and a brutal thug who deserves to be locked up but won’t get what should be coming to him because he’s a rich kid. Neither way is he subject to any League discipline. Far cry from Holmes, who may just be a jackass, but is such a jackass that it’s threatening his career. If I’m a GM, I’ll take Roethlisberger’s problems over Holmes’s anyday. But as a person, I’d say that it’s either about the same or Ben’s issues are a whole lot worse, depending on a bunch of stuff I’m never going to know.

One more for Ben and he will be gone

This is not Al Davis, or Daniel Snyder win at all cost owners, the Rooney’s whatever you’re feeling is about the topic are moralists. Of course if they do trade him I don’t expect a dump in a Holmes style, but make no bones about it, if Ben does another dumb thing that tarnishes the steelers they will trade him.

If anybody thinks somebody is untradeable, just remember crybaby Cutler, my personal theory is that Ben will not finish his contract in pittsburgh. He has quite a long way to go on the deal, and he’s already on thin ice.

by TJBOLT on Apr 13, 2010 10:34 AM PDT reply actions

This trade makes sense for both teams really

This should help the Jets put some pressure on Braylon Edwards.
The Jets don’t lose a whole lot in terms of incoming talent but will be without
his services for at least 4 weeks.

The Steelers get some value for a guy who might not be in the league for much longer
if he can’t keep his head together. If he screws up again and he misses a full year, the Steelers cut him outright and get no compensation (likely).

When Cromartie was traded for a the 2nd/3rd rounder it seemed like everyone
here thought the Jets overpaid for him. I know I was excited at the prospect of a 2nd rounder for a guy that had to go. I think most of would agree we would have been happy
with a mid-fourth rounder this year for Cro.
Well, the Steelers are pretty much getting that low 3rd-high 4th round value for Holmes when you consider he wouldn’t be on the field for a quarter of the season. Maybe the Jets got a bit of a steal, but I call this one a push.
