Filed to ESPN: After signing DE Jarvis Green earlier, Broncos agreed to a three-year deal with former San Diego DT Jamal Williams.

This stings
It hardly seems worth saving $5 million. This is far worse than letting LT go in my opinion.

You just made my night...
errr, I mean, morning…
I’m sincerely hoping this isn’t another LeKevin Smith type deal for us…
Based on your reaction is it safe to assume you guys think he still has some left in that big tank of his?

I suspect he does. He is injury prone at this point in his career, though. If I were you I’d be hoping that when he gets injured it isn’t season ending.

makes sense... Wayne obviously must think he does too!
I’m holding on to the idea that part of the deal involves mentoring and grooming some of our young guys into quality pros.
So even if the vets we have do get hurt they still have something to contribute off the field…

I believe that makes him one of the top 3-4 paid DTs in the league in 2010.

You touched on a magic word
“Health”
It was the most important reason why the Broncos started so strong last year. No one could compete with them on the health front. They were able to put in their starters week in and week out without much deviation. It was extraordinary. For me, that makes it hard to rate the 2010 Broncos because that means that we can’t really judge them based on the 2009 Broncos. Combine that with the loss of their defensive coordinator and it makes it even harder.
Seems like a good topic for our AFC West correspondent (Sam) that should ignite some heated discussion if the Mile High guys stop by.

I'm certainly not the AFC West correspondent, but am a Mile High Guy...
Yes, good health helps. See what happened when our RT, Ryan Harris, went down? Our lack of depth (and scheme? are we zone or power?) was exposed and it went downhill from there.
I would have to agree with you that you cannot rate the 2010 Broncos based upon the 2009 Broncos. However, in the world of free agency and salary caps (well usually at least) there is not as much consistency from year to year for any team is there?
60 percent of the locker room was new last year and I would suspect that we’ll have another 15 percent turnover this year. That means only about 17-18 of the 2008 Broncos will be on the active roster to start 2010 – and many of these 17-18 were acquired in 2007/08. Combine this kind of player turnover with new coordinators every year and it is just a bit difficult to build any chemistry or consistency. Even if we had not experienced great health to start with I think it would still be hard to compare seasons is what I’m getting at.
McX (McDaniels + Xanders) have specific traits they are looking for at each position. This comes from New England where McDaniels wrote the WR and DB portions of “the NE position manual”. It will take a while for McX to get positions filled with the players that fit the mold they are looking for. I do believe we are in this for the long haul. Bringing in veterans that are leaders who can win now (if they stay healthy) while mentoring the young guys we draft that fit McX’s mold. At least if the vets do get hurt the signings will not be a total wash if they can still manage to groom the young guys. If the vets do manage to stay healthy AND groom the young guys Denver will hopefully be competitive for many years to come.
You must be thinking that’s a pretty little fiction, but as a fan, isn’t that what hopes and dreams are made of?
One a different subject (sort of), there have been some interesting articles (link) recently on MHR that discuss the pressure on coaches to win early and win often. The article does a good job of taking a micro view of how many years a Head Coach had been with a team before he A) got to a Super Bowl and B) won a Super Bowl. In my opinion, the original goal of the article was to see how much time a new Head Coach should be given to produce a winning product on the field. Reading between the lines I think the article was hoping to calm some of the distaste for McDaniels that has already started – as in we should accept X number of losing seasons if we want to make it the Super Bowl Y times.and win it Z times.
This does tie into what I mentioned above in regards to McX bringing in the Vets to win now – so he can keep his job and bringing in young guys that fit their mold to win in the long run – so he can keep his job a long time and win Super Bowls.
Well, my apologies, that turned into a bit of a ramble so I’ll bring it to an end. First time over here and hopefully not the last….

I tried to read this
But Im still not quite sure what you want to say. I like MHR a lot; but this seems like a summery of what I’ve been reading their recently.
I think everyone here understands what the Broncos are trying to do; and some, including myself are a little jealous at the money they seem to be spending this off season (especially when it results in the theft of our beloved former DL). The roster turnover is something that is astounding; that much we can agree on.
What I dont read over at MHR; is how exactly are these older Dline going to help the club beat the Chargers. Because as everyone knows we tend to just throw the rock all over the field.
It was originally a response to a comment made by Wonko above...
Wonko mentioned that it will be difficult to rate the 2010 Broncos based on the 2009 Broncos. I agree with this.
Part of Wonko’s reasoning was health and yes, that contributed, but there is more to it than that. I then got on my soapbox and supported the point with my own reasoning – which mainly revolves around the turnover we’ve experienced.
From there I went on a slight tangent regarding the pressure on Head Coaches to win early because I feel it is tied into the aforementioned personnel turnover.
That’s all. I tend to get a little long winded at times… especially during the wee hours of the morning. Thanks for asking for clarification.
Now this is pretty much pure speculation on my part, but I do believe the expectations for the 30+ year olds is to hold down the fort for now and groom the young guys. The age should also be minimized as a result of the rotation we are leaning towards. The number of plays will be limited and should not resemble a full-time, every down starter’s number of plays.
The hope then is that this will give these older guys a better chance of staying healthy for the entire year. Or at least not get hurt at the same time?
Against potent passing attacks… if we can get any sort of pressure up front our secondary will be even that much better! That ’s the bottom line. We need to get pressure up front so our talented (albeit a little old) secondary can make plays!

By comparison
In 2006, Ted Washington was 36 and got a 2 year $7 million contract with $4 million guaranteed to play NT for the Browns.
This was the largest contract for 36+ year old non-QB.
In 2004, Ted Washington was 34 and got a 4 year $14 million contract to play NT for the Raiders.
This was the largest contract for 34+ year old non-QB.

that NT is one of the hardest positions to fill. Does this solidify SD’s pick of NT in the first round?
No
Because there is probably only guy with that kind of value at that position. If he’s gone, I suspect they’ll wait until the second round.

Its gotta sting a little when one of your teammates over the last six years heads to your arch rival. That being said, all the players know its a business and I’m sure they are happy and understanding of the contract JWall just signed.
At least this move shouldn’t really affect how we play against the Donks next year. Its not like we ran well against them last year.
As a Chargers Fan
I feel the same as Merriman. Loved Williams when he was here, but now (because he is a Bronco) hate him. Any team but the Broncos or Patriots. So it is about money, and being wanted, I get that. No, I don’t think he is worth the contract, but I hope the Chargers knew something to make them think he wasn’t worth the one they had. Faith in the new guys or lack of faith he’d be healthy, I hope they thought it through and didn’t underestimate his value (he’s a PB NT when healthy, for Christ sake!).
As Wonko said, “This Stings”.

oh dear...
Why does it seem like we’re doing absolutely nothing to improve our team while we’re letting long-term popular players on our team just bounce.
First LT who scored 12 TDs last year, then Osgood who’s a special team king, then Cromartie for a 2001 pick which doesn’t help us in 2010 whatsoever,. and now J-Wall who even if he played 2 downs would still be our best DT.
This is how AJ Smith operates...

I agree, but its just hard to be that patient in a “win now” sport like the NFL. Especially with the possibility of there not even being a 2011 season. Even if there is one, there will certainly be some attrition even from the core group of players who are returning this year.
Yeah, so...

Late Jwill
I still remember my first job working at Caldera Spas, when I was only 19 I think. Jwill got out of his Mercedes in the parking lot, and lumbered into the store. I was sweeping I wasnt even a salesmen at the time.
He walked right up to me and introduced himself, even after people were pointing and staring at him.
He goes “which one of dem LT got”? (pointing at all the spas). I just pointed to the newest one cause LT always had the newer model for free cause he did our commercials.
Then he said “I’ll cop one of dem”, and told me he had to leave. I found out later he bought a ton of chemicals too, and payed for a difficult rushed install.
Because he talked to me and arranged the sale, I was credited with it by my boss. Even though I was suppose to refer him to a salesmen, but because I simply just answered his question I got the sale. It was my quickest, first, and biggest commission sale I ever made at that job.
can't wait
Jamal Williams facing Nick Hardwick. :) come on guys Nick is a great center give him some credit, more like quit the whining about what you guys are used to by now which is AJ letting go of players(I’m glad he let go of Lt and JW) I wished CRO would have stayed and fixed everything but its better for CRO to move on gl for him can’t wait for next season with new runner backs and defensive players :)
How many Super Bowls
did all of these old great players we’re letting go get us to? Exactly, be excited for the young guys coming in. But I do hate the Broncos and Vikings, today kind of sucked.
I have a question though, do you think we’re going to be using a somewhat hybrid 4/3, 3/4 D like last year? Or a traditional 3/4?
well, to honest, the charger run defense has been getting pushed around the last few seasons
so maybe a change was needed. I have no doubt one of these young guys will do just as well as JDub has the last few years. Now, before one of you guys JUMP DOWN MY THROAT, you have to remember how easily teams were running on us even when williams was in there. to be honest, I think our entire d line needs to be replaced.
who is the is desperation for the borncos?
they get a experienced freak of a NT to use whatever he has left in the tank. and all that experience will hopefully rub off on his replacement. they didn’t just sign him to be a player, they got him to be a mentor. i wonder if ole’ eagle eye considered that? do you think it would have been worth it to keep him for the remaining year on his contract and let Jwall be a mentor to our young guys? before you answer, look what LT’s mentoring has done for turner and sproles.
The peanut gallery has spoken!!!
Do I think we should have keep him one more year, yes. I know you dont want to hear this, but there’s a decent chance he actually did have a year or more to mentor his replacement. Knowing AJ I wouldnt put it passed him to figure we already have a starting quality NT on the roster. Which scrub errr project it is, I couldnt tell you.
It will sure be interesting seeing wtf becomes of the scrubs set to make the 2010 roster. There’s:
Boone: the old quiet vet from KC who is always smiling. Say whatever you want about him but he was solid in 2009. He also had 4 sacks. If each of our D linemen had 4 sacks we would be in great shape.
OG: is this guy good or have the potential to be at least decent. I have no clue, as soon as he starting looking solid he sprained his ankle. And never appeared the same, then had to go on IR.
Martin: he looked like he was on skis for the Pittsburgh game, Ive never seen anyone go backwards so fast. He was benched then saw some action late in the season, but he lacks technique and looks drunk sometimes with his hand violently waving around.
Johnson: Always injured, but usually somewhat effective.
Garay: he already 30 so he’s not much of a project, but as a former wrestler at least he uses good leverage
Bingham: remember him being solid? Cause I dont
I figure at least 1 of these guys turns out to be very good, AJ better hope its more like 3.
Castillo? Cesaire?
Lets not forget, these “scrubs” managed to go 12-4 without Jamal last year (and without Bingham, for that matter, who was slotted to replace Igor).
least we be reminded
we went 13-3 without Jwall against some teams that were . average, .500, or worse. i brought up this point last season, when it was said “we’re going to be fine, we got an easy schedule down the stretch..”. my point was if you struggle against average teams to score points, then how well are we going to do against “winning” teams, in the playoffs? Castillo? Cesaire? anybody looks good against a .500 or worse teams.
The peanut gallery has spoken!!!
We actually went 12-4 in games without Jwall. He played in the first game.
Lets look at what the Defense (and team) did without Jamal:
Won at NYG, a team which had started 5-0 and boasted a great run game. 20 pts allowed.
Won at Dallas, a playoff team with a strong offense. 17 pts, 7 of which were garbage.
Ditto Cincinnati and Philly, both playoff teams.
Played well enough to keep Chris Johnson, who had one of the all time great seasons, in check for the meaningful parts of the game. 17 pts allowed on the road on short rest.
Beat down the Broncos, held them to 3 points in Denver.
Held down the Dolphins and their wildcat enough to win, gave up only 6 meaningful points.
Lost to the Jets but gave up only 17 points to the best rushing O in the league. I put that loss on Kaeding and the offense way more than the defense.
Won 11 games in a row. Etc etc.
The defense wasn’t perfect. Far from it. It needs to improve in order for the Chargers to keep getting better. But they weren’t exactly lost out there without Jamal. And while they did get some easier wins, they also gutted out a lot of tough wins against good teams with formidable offenses.

you mean i do want to hear it.
it took what 4, 5 srub urrr players to replace him? so i agree with you. all i’m sayin’ is, value means more than what you put on the field. Jwall just made people around him better, or at least look better. now he’ll be doin’ the same thing in denver.

Man Since Chargers are rebuilding
AFC west title might not be for the Chargers any more but I hope not

Yeah...
Because we will lose to K.C., Denver, and Oakland once to each of them. And to Tenessee, who we beat like by 300 points on short rest. And we lose to Cincinnati, too…
…. right.
13-3 seems more likely.

Yeah, I think so too.
I’m predicting 5-1 in the division again: haven’t whiffed on that one yet. SOS matches are NE, Cincy. I like our chances. AFCS is always tough, but we get to host Jacksonville and Tennessee this time, so I think we’ll go 4-2 in the rest of the conference. I have no fear of Seattle or St. Louis. I think the 49ers will match up well against us, and the Cards are always dangerous, but it’s hard not to like San Diego for at least eleven wins.
What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the cheerleaders!

Boo!
I can’t believe the dooms day’ers are out already. I mean come on, at least wait until the chargers lose (or fail to win by at least four touchdowns) a game or two before coming out of the woodwork and screaming about the position the team will be in when January comes rolling around (which, by the way, is ten months from now and five months from then). That way, like last year, you can avoid looking foolish. …Oh, wait….
AJ is the boss
But the moves on D are nervous-making.
Cro: OK, off-field issues, but decent corner. Does off-field problems = on-field problems? If not, still confuses me why you make the move. Our next deep on the charts are not improvements.
JWall: Either Denver is does not understand his value or we don’t. Our NT behind him look like a big drop off. Yes, tail-end of career, but his tail-end was still a lot better than many guys prime. When I argued that this made me nervous, some said 1) no one else has picked him up (no longer true); 2) we might be trying to get him back for less (no longer relevant)
AJ has put a good team on the field for awhile, so it is quite arrogant for me to say “This is a bad move!”. But it is a move that makes me nervous until I see what replaces it.
And if the move is not about quality, but about saving money in an uncapped/unfloored year, that makes me bummed.
Dang...
at least I got to see Jamal and Tomlinson play twice in Jax…too bad Tomlinson got shut down both times.
This is the one questionable move I think the Chargers have made so far. I hope they find a suitable replacement through the draft because the guys they have now, as good as they played late in the season, just seemed way too small for 3-4 nose tackles.
History of interdivision team changes
I remember Rod Bernstein (Broncos) and John Parella (Raiders). Neither of those really came back to bite the Chargers, and I would say that the Parella situation is pretty close to what to expect with Williams.
While Parella’s last couple years as a Charger were pretty damn dominant (where no one could run on the Chargers even though the D was on the field all the time ’cuz the offense was horrific), and people around the league cited him as a guy they really hated to play against because he was so strong, he went and had two forgettable seasons in Oakland.
