just saw highlights from him

looks fast, but then again that was 4 years ago.

Well

His numbers don’t look too bad. He can catch. I wonder what this means for the draft? Take one guy high, and one guy low to compete for a spot? Who knows.

by aesimpleton on Mar 8, 2010 6:19 PM PST reply actions

It means little to nothing with regards to the draft or future personnel decisions.

It’s just another player picked up off the waiver wire. They probably liked some of what they saw from him and decided to give him a shot to see if he had something to contribute to them next year.

If he turns out to be something special or good in a niche role, fantastic. However, it’s not even guaranteed he’ll make the team after cuts so it’s probably a move not worth pondering too much over.

I love my team of historically talented underachievers.

Well, he seems like a speed back.

Wonder if this means the Bolts are looking to draft a back like Dwyer or Tate.

This off-season officially sucks for FIVE reasons and counting...

Does this guy cover kicks?

by AirNorval on Mar 8, 2010 6:59 PM PST reply actions

From what I have read

the Skins didn’t think he had value on special teams coverage and that was one of the reasons he was released.
He is worth a look, he had two huge years in college (against low level competition) and he had a great 08 pre season and a decent 09 pre season. Maybe he makes the team and contributes a little, maybe he is inactive every week like Bennett last season, or maybe he gets cut.

Who else was huge in college? Let's see.

Ryan Leaf
Mike Mamula
Charly Martin
Akili Smith
Robert Gallery
Courtney Brown

Every other first-round bust and “never-panned-out” player EVER.

Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.

So what you are saying is

Never pick up guys who were huge in college?

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

Way to misunderstand

Everyone I listed above as well as Mason and legions of others was a stud in college. However, everyone I listed above as well as Mason and legions of others has had a poor career (or, I concede, not gotten a shot). Success in the NFL is not something you fart out overnight.

haaaaaaaa

slow clap

I’m fairly okay with Mason as a backup or as a guy who never touches the ball, but if he sees significant playing time without a HUGE preseason and TC showing I will be skeptical at best (and homicidal at worst).

Never said he was going to be great

in fact I said “maybe he makes the team and contributes a little, maybe he is inactive every week like Bennett or maybe he gets cut”.
I was simply mentioning some of the reasons that may have lead to the Chargers giving him a look, its not like they signed him to some huge contract. A bunch of guys are brought to training camp each year and many get cut, he may be one of them.

by JeromeB on Mar 9, 2010 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

Or can he return kicks? If they wind up trading Sproles, maybe this guy can return kicks?

by DCB on Mar 8, 2010 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

He's the new M Bennett

Inactive on gameday. IF he makes the roster.

by Aussiecharger on Mar 8, 2010 7:21 PM PST reply actions

one team's garbage

is sometimes another team’s treasure. See Ryan Grant, Priest Holmes and others. Of course, there are probably 50 RBs who get claimed off waivers a year and most of them don’t amount to anything. But he does have good size at 5-9, 215.

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Mar 8, 2010 7:28 PM PST reply actions

My buddy is a Skins fan, he told me this guy torn it up in pre season. If he can cover kicks he might stand a shot at the roster.

by AirNorval on Mar 8, 2010 10:28 PM PST reply actions

Nice pickup

Maybe this guy and a scrub late round pick, can make a decent competition out of the 5th RB spot. Assuming we carry 5 total backs yet again.

Thomas Jones, Chester Taylor.......

NAh! lets get this guy. nobody knows who he is.
for the love of God, if you’re reaching for a RB, please get somebody worth making a phone call for.

and wanted multi-year deals so it was not going to happen.

We're not reaching for anything

We just picked him up off the waiver wire. That means we pick up his contract but (1) it’s probably really cheap and (2) there’s probably no guaranteed money until after preseason. So we pay him a bit to come to our training camp and if he looks good, we can keep him for that amount of money. If not, then no harm done.

by cowbell on Mar 9, 2010 9:22 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

and both are proven RB's

look AJ has made it clear they are clearing out old players with high salaries, that don’t produce. in this instance RB. so mostly i was just joking, but on minor tip i can see this guy is just roster filler at RB, and if he work’s out, great for the team. the simple fact is, they will draft a RB, but any rookie, no matter how good, is still a gamble. they went an got a guy that was still young, is still looking to prove himself, and he comes cheap.

so in retrospect AJ and crew are not in panic, and-lets-get-somebody-to-win-no-mode. i get that, however we are one of the worst at running the ball last season. so this may be over my head, but will you bring up ages and money, i don’t see how this improves our chances at improving our running game with a scrub, and a rookie draft pick.

that’s all i’m sayin’….

The peanut gallery has spoken!!!

A Preseason Star

The fact that Acee calls him a preseason star leads me to believe that he was brought in solely for that purpose. I expect two drafted running backs and I figure that Mason will be brought into camp to help push the rookies along.
If the guy is a standout in preseason it might help the rookies see that
the NFL is big time competition and it might make them work harder to hang around.
Otherwise, he likely won’t be on the team. I don’t how how the practice squad works exactly (if you can be put on if you played x number of snaps the previous year, etc.) but I can’t imagine him being on the team with what looks like 4 backs already (5 if we draft 2).

One thing that someone brought up the other day

Mason played briefly for Ron Turner at Illinois. This could be an influence on bringing him in.
